New ATI Catalyst Reference Drivers

GAME.AMD.COM now offers downloads of new version 9.11 Catalyst reference drivers for ATI accelerators. As noted here, the new Windows drivers add GPU acceleration of H.264 video content using Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Beta and High Quality downscaling for video transcoding MSE. The new Linux drivers add support for RHEL 5.4 and openSUSE 11.2, though we cannot find the new Linux drivers for download yet.

Jerykk: Yeah same here. Hence why I stopped updating. Also, XP is old so ATI/AMD doesn't do much with it. I don't play much PC games and upgrading can break stuff. I am fine with v9.7 for now.

Nope, I don't see anything about improved gaming performance. ATI drivers have been disappointing as of late. Whenever I see news about Nvidia drivers, they always mentioned performance improvements or added SLI support. You rarely see these things from ATI drivers.

Uh, so do these add Crossfire support for any games or other improve performance?

Only need to uninstall if there are problems. I always overinstalled/upgraded on my old updated XP Pro. SP3 machine. I haven't done it since v9.7. I think it is time to try these new ones.

I'm curious, what's the prevailing wisdom on driver installation these days? Is the old wisdom of completely remove, reboot, install still valid or can you just install the new drivers right on top of the old ones?
You can install right over top like everyone else has said. The only time you need to do anything like that is if you're downgrading. Then it's remove, reboot, install new drivers(and in some cases wipe with something like driver cleaner).

I never had a problem with XP64 and a driver install overtop, Win7 much better. No reboot required even.

Have had a Sapphire 5870 for a couple months. Only issue is I sometimes get flickering borders on bank tabs in WoW.

I buy both, usually the best bang for the buck. I've had to replace fan + HS on both nVidia and ATI. Never had one completely fail or get a bad part out of the box

i recently lost my radeon 64mb ddr, ati actually manufactured that, but fan died and core popped. i should complain tho 9 years is kinda shitty to get out of a video card, the rage 3d pro it replaced is still fine

otoh i'm constantly worried about the 2 year old 8600m in my laptop. everybody makes junk, but just for flame wars sake, whens the last time ati made a card that failed en masse? laptop or otherwise?

Right on top. Doesn't even require reboot. It's awesome.

Just did it. I swear I heard an Elder Gaming God shriek when I did it, though.

Thanks for the answers. Now I just hope my mouse doesn't strangle me in my sleep tonight.

ATI never ever again. To bad I had to learn that the hard way.

How do you know it's ATI's fault? Maybe you just got a bad card. You know, ATI doesn't manufacture the cards...

IIRC Sapphire back in the 9800 Pro days was a quality manufacturer who made the bulk of the PCB's for ATI. Dunno about these days though.

Just don't buy Powercolor, my card is supposed to be factory overclocked but I actually have to underclock (vs stock) the memory. I noticed the fuckers since revised the card with the proper memory.

Ever since I moved to Vista (and now Windows 7), I have always installed Catalysts right on top of older ones, and that's always worked fine for me. I've only ever had one issue under Windows 7 (not being able to use non-widescreen resolutions for older games without stretching the image) which was fixed with a driver reinstall, but a lot of other people had the same issue and it's apparently caused by Windows Update installing an older driver on top of the currently installed one.

My last 3 video cards have all been ATIs and I think they were all Sapphires. Maybe I've just been lucky, because I haven't had any problems.

Yeah. Don't buy Sapphire to reduce your chances of a bad unit. They are cheaper for a reason...

I've got a Sapphire 9800 Pro that's still running like a top. What was once my gaming rig is now my mothers' desktop.

Maybe it's some settings in your CCC?

I didn't make any changes in the CCC. I just tried 9.11 and the shadowing/flickering problem is worse!

I'm going to try 9.3 and 9.1 to see if that makes a difference.

"tripping"? Did you mean, chirping? If so that's usually a bad cap and that happens to every company. It's easily fixed or you can replace the card itself. Having owned both Nvidia and ATI cards over the years, I've had problems on both sides of the fence but most of them are a result of faulty components or driver issues that get remedied.

ATI never ever again. To bad I had to learn that the hard way.

My second last ATI card sucked. My previous nVidia card sucked. Yeah. It seems to be hit or miss to be honest. However I'm happy with my 4670.

I'm using 9.10 and having graphical issues with GTA IV. Anyone else having problems textures disappearing (or slow to reappear) and other Z-filtering issues? Someone suggested I try 9.8 and haven't done that yet. I might try these 9.11 drives to see if anything changed.
