Why Alganon Resembles WoW

Alganon Interview with David Allen on The MMO Gamer talks with David Allen, co-founder and President of Quest Online, about Alganon, their debut MMORPG. They cover a wide variety of topics and conclude by asking about the similarities many have noted between this game and World of Warcraft. Here's part of the lengthy reply:
Our biggest fans are the players who take the time to view Alganon as its own product, but you have to play the game to do that. Most of the naysayers never played the game; they base their negative comments on assumptions they’ve made from playing other games, or reading forums, or looking at screenshots. They compare these surface elements and make a list of things they find similar. Even when they do enter the game, they do so with the goal of finding similarities. They don’t bother to ask the most important question of all, “is it fun?”

The artwork is pretty uninspired...the parts that don't attempt to borrow from WoW. <insert generic warlockish dude with furrowed eyebrows and glowing, pupil-less eyes>

Blizzard's artwork seems less detailed and whimsical as time goes on but, Samwise this stuff ain't.

Their pathetic client requires .NET?! What is this - some amateur project written in Visual Basic?

WoW is portable - this isn't. Not going anywhere.

I think it's just us, here on Blue's News, who complain, because outside our sphere nobody seems to care... including Blizzard.

Blizzard doesn't care at this point because it's not worth the effort to go after such a small fry.

Now, if this game somehow put a dent in Blizzard's subscriptions... they might have a different attitude.

Yifes brought up an interesting angle... what if this game was changed to be a parody of WoW? All the WoW haters might eat this up (and there are a lot of them). Of course... it would have to be a really good / fun Parody to work... and not too over the top like "Dungeon Runners".

Oh well... I don't think Blizzard has anything to worry about. Heh.

umm how about is this game good??? is this a valid question?? well I am here to tell you, Stay away from this. Bad server that drops you constantly, bad graphics worse than WOW in some ways, spawns are just cookie cutter dumb ass A.I. that seemed to be part of some older game that failed. only thing interesting is you can train while your off line. lol

Well train away toon. I will never come back to this.

Who cares if the game resemble to WoW, maybe it's more fun? WoW is so boring these days...at least people who played WoW will be familiar pretty quickly I presume.

Take.. say... the dances. I saw a movie on youtube and it matched the dance of each character to somewhere else (movies and music clips).

Wow, you're a sharp one.

So I did a little experiment. I posted a message on many other sites about Alganon. The overwhelming response was "I DON'T CARE". I mean really. I was getting flack from people that play, and I assume love, WOW. I think it's just us, here on Blue's News, who complain, because outside our sphere nobody seems to care... including Blizzard.

Take warcraft for instance and how it rips warhammer, according to many.

Up to a point. Warcraft has diverged pretty far from it's Warhammer roots in Warcraft 3, and has established it's mythos as a legitimate and distinct fantasy universe.

Take.. say... the dances. I saw a movie on youtube and it matched the dance of each character to somewhere else (movies and music clips).

Dude... that is because the dances are direct parodies. You can find references to pop culture everywhere in wow, such as character names, items, quest stories, etc. Do you not realize that the developers put in Alizee and Napoleon Dynamite dances for the humor, with the very intention of them being found? </facepalm>

Notice how the 2 people to praise the game registered today, and this is their only post?

Couldn't help noticing. It doesn't help that the person used the same turn of phrase in both posts ("it has its bugs, but...")

Guess even their shills are cheap quality

Look there are two kinds of people out there... First there are those that are hung up on preconceived notions, and deny themselves the ability to try it. Then there are the ones playing and enjoying the game.

Who cares about dedicated servers or lean anyhow?

I know it's the wrong thread, I was trying to be funny.

come on people, there is no such thing as originality. Whatever you do comes from something else. Take warcraft for instance and how it rips warhammer, according to many.

I did see the screenshots and they do look like wow but why is that? It's the colorful settings and cartoonish style, the interface. So what.. world of warcraft is no innocent either. Take.. say... the dances. I saw a movie on youtube and it matched the dance of each character to somewhere else (movies and music clips).

Don't think blizzard can't do shit here. A game, specially an MMO, is not just visuals. The game may resemble wow visually, but i doubt it's as polished as wow. Many have tried and will keep to do so but wow has a secret formula that will take years before anyone even understands what it is. Lucky for me, i do, but just don't have the so-called '1 billion' to make it

It doesn't matter if the game is fun David! If virtually every aspect from your game is stolen from another game... that's theft! I'm sure the people behind Limbo of the Lost wanted to make a "fun" game too, but it didn't discount the fact that they ripped off assets from numerous games and films.

I was about to pass it off as one of those free MMOs with some sort of item mall. But then I found out these fuckers are charging for this shit. If I was in charge of Blizzard's legal department I would immediately send out a cease and desist notice. I mean the amount of blatant rip-off is so overt it's laughable if it wasn't so true.

There's no way Blizzard is going to stand for this.

Played the beta for a while. Blatant WoW rip-off. Why the fuck would I pay to play this game, when I already have time invested in WoW? It's the same game, for Christ's sake. (Except there are no dungeons or anything really in game yet....)

People get all defensive because this is "their" game, but seriously, there is no reason to play this if you have ever played WoW. (Or if you hate WoW, you won't like this either.)

Holy christ. How does Blizzard not sue these people? ALL of the screenshots - not some, ALL, of them - contain something that looks EXACTLY like WOW. Check out the building in screenshot #17 "Talrok in Thought" (http://alganon.com/screenshots). That's THE ORC style! The 'Mudbones' in #25 "Mudbone Camp" looked EXACTLY like Worgen. #33 "Skeletal Sailor"... yup, you guessed it, looks exactly like Skeletons in WOW. #21 "Alganon Interface" notice the icons in the chat UI (it's like they took a screenshot in WOW and placed them in their game). I mean really Quest Online? Really?! Is it too hard to come up with an original game, and a look all your own?!
