EA Cut "Over a Dozen" Games, MoH "Revitalization" Nears

Gamasutra reports on the post-earnings conference call following up on EA's finacial reporting, where EA CEO John Riccitiello said of the 1500 jobs lost, saying: "these cuts are essential to transforming our company." Big Download has another tidbit from the call, saying that as part of their cost cutting EA has cancelled "over a dozen" games. Finally, G4tv.com's story on the call reports EA Games label head Frank Gibeau said a "revitalization" of the Medal of Honor franchise will be revealed soon.

The guy is a suit that knows zero about games and gaming. I just hope that ignorance puts EA into a death spiral once and for all.

There have been plenty of businesses run into the ground by people who knew their product, but knew jack about running a business. When it comes to a company of this size, you want someone who can run your business, not someone who can design a game.

Leave the game design up to the appropriate professionals, and leave the business side of things to the appropriate professionals as well.

Anyone with any idea of how businesses are run knows that John Riccitiello has done quite a bit to turn EA around. Their games are, on average, much better received, and EA's reputation is a lot better than it used to be. (Extremist sites like Blue's News aside.) I, for one, thank the guy for cutting down on the amount of shovelware EA puts out. They still release some stinkers, but a disturbing number of my favorite games over the last 2 years have had the "EA" intro video in them.

5 years ago almost none did.

Total compensation for 2009...$6,365,823.00

Wow, that's even less than I thought. Not even 1/10th of what those laid off employees probably got in yearly pay and benefits. Of course in the gaming industry CEOs aren't really as overpaid as in other industries.

If you don't like where gaming is heading, stop giving your money to the people who are taking it in that direction.
