Modern Warfare 2 Tomorrow

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches tomorrow, and Robert Bowling tweets about the game's broken street date, saying "if you bought a retail copy on PC, you can play it on 11.10.09," since the game needs to be activated on Steam. Meanwhile, GamesIndustry.biz has praise from retailers for Activation's handing of the game's launch. MCV has a roundup of where to get the best price on the military shooter sequel in the UK, including Sainsbury's where the game will be £26. And speaking of the UK, Computer and Video Games reports concerns over the game's civilian shooting scene will be raised in Parliament today. Finally, Reuters reposts their article listing lofty expectations for the title, saying: "Sales estimates range from 11 million-13 million units by end-2009."

if anyone cares. the review for mw2 at gametrailers is up and the file name of the streaming video is named 'nodedicatedserverlolwut'. at least their inner geek has a sense of humor and superiority. albeit a little more on the cowardly side.

UPDATE: gametrailers considers the increased auto aim assist as an important addition to the game. they admit that a gamepad would not cut it if they took auto aim assist out of the equation because of the sheer number of enemies thrown at the player. lol.

After reading lots of the posts around here. I just have this to say.
I'm a gamer whatever the platform. What IW is doing with COD MW 2 is give us less while paying more.
What worries me is that instead of an united front of gamers towards pushing companies into providing the best value whatever the platform many are accepting their actions and criticizing gamers that want more.
Each platform has its pros and cons but wouldn't it be great if we could get the best of both worlds?
And question is : "Is there any technological limitation to doing just that?" Isn't it possible to have dedicated servers on consoles
to provide the best ping and perhaps even more players per server? Isn't it possible for companies to start pushing at least limited mod support on the consoles?
Isn't it possible to have a matchmaking system that works on top of dedicated servers instead of less reliable p2p?
I think IW pushing their own online service is a good move as it keeps the community united and they can use it to better control piracy.
Online profiles can also help with that. But none of the things gamers are asking destroy that control.
Both PC gamers and console gamers should demand for more and better.

OMG. I lol'd when read about the hold on the Steam release of this game. If the people that run Steam had any choice in this matter (I suspect they didn't) they just shot themselves in the foot. Future pre-release sales of any game through Steam will now be minuscule.
Truth is brutal. Prepare for pain.

Whenever I encounter one of these guys who claim they can aim just as well with a controller as they can with a mouse and keyboard, I just simply ask them if they'd prefer to navigate their desktop with a controller as well.

There's plenty of programs out there that could facilitate this experiment as well. "Go ahead, click on that My Computer icon using your thumbsticks. Click on that link in the paragraph twiddlin' your thumbs."

I click heads just as easily as I click the Start button.

Yeah alot of us grew up on a m/kb, but this generation has grown up on a controller and they are just as deadly with it.

That depends on whether or not the game was designed for console or PC. Take the best CoD4 or Halo console player and pit him against an average PC gamer in Quake. Console player uses gamepad, PC players use M/KB. I think you can guess who wins.

google : mouse and keyboard on 360

Have fun.

The XFPS360, in all it's iterations, sucks. Trust me on this one.

The only system that works well is the XIM system (Google it). Ironically it incorporates the XFPS360 as part of the system but there's also another component and specific software that's needed. Be prepared to sink about $200+ into it if you want one.

Theres also a XIM2 thats is out but it is incredibly difficult to procure.

yes it is fun to shoot a game pad controlled opponent from behind because it takes them ages to turn around.

even if you put a keyboard and mouse on a console the controls are still calibrated for a gamepad.

Touché, sir. However...how does this work then? Are the consoles still auto-aiming for you? Is game play as fast as on a PC? It seems to me that even with these M/KB controllers you're still gimped by the console development.

We were playing against 'younger' seasoned controller dudes and it was a slaughter, you just cant move or be as accurate/fast with a controller & M/K end of story. Period.

Enough of this console vs mouse/keyboard shit already. Yeah alot of us grew up on a m/kb, but this generation has grown up on a controller and they are just as deadly with it.

my young cousin grew up playing consoles. he is deadly with the gamepad but when i made him play halo on a pc he could not hit anything unless it was standing next to him. reason? there is no aim assist on the pc version. so they are not as deadly with it.

I realize its the B&M outlets that are being placated with the delayed release but at some point the publishers are going to need to take a stand. Gamestop/EB barely give any retail space to PC games to begin with so its not like they are losing a huge amount of cash against DD anyhow.

Be that as it may, they probably still sell more PC copies than digital distribution. Besides, Gamestop's leverage comes from the massive console sales it has.... the number of PC copies it carries hardly enters into the equation. Remember, Activision makes it's money on sales to Gamestop, and not from their sales to the individual customers. So they would want to keep them happy.

The question of why publishers can't be more firm is kind of cyclic. The retailers exercise their influence to ensure that digital distribution rates remain at MSRP, while they themselves will lower prices and attract more sales. The more sales they have, the more leverage they have and the they can keep pressing publishers to treat digital distribution as the step child, which benefits them and leads to more sales again.

I also read within the last few weeks that Gamestop has finally understood that they need a presence in the digital distribution market as well, and that they are shopping around. From what I read, Impulse and Metaboli are 2 of the prime candidates for acquisition.

Just as deadly? No. Wrong. There's a reason PC Gamers can't play on the same servers as console owners. That's why.

Oh, and please point me to a link where you can buy these comparable controllers.

Developers are migrating to where the mass is. Naturally, that's not on decked out gaming PCs. Problem is, companies like infinity ward grew out of the hard-core PC gaming scene when it was in its hayday. They turned their backs on their homeboys.

There are some game types that work way better on consoles. Fighting games, side-scrollers and the two games you mentioned are those types. First person shooters are not.

UPDATE:

It looks like the STEAM version is now pre-loading. I'm holding out hope that they are doing it so we can play tomorrow with the rest of the free world.

Enough of this console vs mouse/keyboard shit already. Yeah alot of us grew up on a m/kb, but this generation has grown up on a controller and they are just as deadly with it.

And there are devices you can purchase to use a m/kb with a 360 and the PS3 already has them.
So by your reasoning Whiskers, the console games suck because they don't use a mouse and keyboard? Proper support for each build (be it console or PC) is solely up to the dev's and games like Assassin's Creed and Batman: Arkham Asylum prove that either control scheme can work IF (see that that's a giant IF) the dev's take the time to do it.
Borderlands is another on that list as well.

EB/Gamestop could've invested some money back into R&D for their own digital distribution application but, like every other publicly held company lately, they only care about the immediate fiscal quarter.
