Spaceships Ahoy - Gratuitous Space Battles

Positech Games announces the release of Gratuitous Space Battles as well as a demo version of this space strategy game. The Impulse listing for the game still lists it as a preorder as of this writing, which will get you a 15% discount on the purchase. The game's website has details, videos, and screenshots, along with downloads of the demo, which is mirrored on AtomicGamer. Here's a bit from the announcement:

Gratuitous Space Battles is an innovative strategy game that plays like a 'massively-singleplayer' hybrid of RTS and tower defense. The player takes on the role of supreme admiral of embarrassingly large fleets of spaceships, which are all individually designed by the player, and is in charge of placing them in formations and issuing orders for them to fight against AI-controlled enemy fleets. Unlike a conventional RTS, the battle itself is non-interactive, as individual AI ship commanders carry out the general rules of engagement set by the player. This makes GSB a true strategic game, where the player is effectively winning or losing the battle before it starts by cunning ship design and clever orders, rather than twitch based reflexes mid battle. The battles themselves are suitably gratuitous, with a heavy emphasis on things exploding and going zap.

Just played it, delete. Last about 30 minutes, read the manual, game just sucks aside from graphics. Who wants to watch uncontrollable ships duke it out?

No strategy at all, just tactics, cross your fingers, start fight.

Yawn....

I wanted to love this game so much.

Alas, it was a little too limited in scope for me.

You give away your freedom for a little convience. Do you like the coloured bars of your cell?

Jealous?

I like Steam. It's a great way to keep my games. I don't have to worry if I delete or lose files.

Is there a Mac port of this? There's some Mac versions of his other games.

I look forward to seeing this on steam

Fuck Steam, what are you, stupid? The game is available now with NO DRM. Why would you wait until it's locked down for you to buy it?

I blame the sales section on Blues for forcing me to buy so many games.
Too true! My steam list keeps growing by leaps and bounds!

fair enough, but the way I tend to not discount games, you'll have to wait about three years

In Internet years? So that's like what 3 weeks? Wink

So I clicked through the tutorial popups rather quickly without reading them. Does the demo lock you out of buying upgrades? I appear to have the honor, but the button to buy the upgrade is dark.

If you alt-tab too often the game has a black screen.

Awesome demo, Cliff. GSB was already on my to-buy list, but now it's reached the point where I may not be willing to wait until after I find new employment. It looks good for many hours of fun, which makes it a bargain in my view. I'm sure I'll pick it up in the next few weeks.
