Torchlight and Torchlight Demo Released

The Torchlight Website announces the release of Torchlight, the new action/RPG from Runic Games (thanks A51Abductee). They describe some issues they've had to overcome, which means they are not offering the playable demo just yet, but the demo can be acquired through Steam. The full game is available from Runic Games as well as GamersGate, Steam, and WildTangent. Here's a bit of the official description of the game:

The adventure is set in the mining settlement of Torchlight, a boomtown founded on the discovery of rich veins of Ember – a rare and mysterious ore with the power to enchant or corrupt all that it contacts. This corruptive power may have dire consequences however, and players set out into the nearby mountains and depths below to discover the full extent of Ember’s influence on the civilizations that have come before.

Players will choose from among three character classes, and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels, with a huge variety of creepy monsters, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete. The endless randomization ensures a long-lived gameplay experience.

The demo sold me on the game as well. Lots of fun.

I've got only one set piece so far (made it to level 14); if I find a second one, I get 9-11 electricity damage bonus. Given that my bow does 234/sec, it's not huge, but I'll take it

For a while there I ran around with a unique rifle (sorcell's) and a unique coat that looks like the enforcer's coat from Fallout 3. That fitting stylishness just felt really cool

If you think the Berserker is imbalanced, wait till you get going with the Vanguisher...

At least the berserker has to walk TO monsters. They never reach my vanguisher anymore.

I 'finished' the game with the berserker dude. Freakin' imba, even on hard mode. Once you got Devestate, there's not stopping you. You literally mow through enemies, even bosses.

Still, it was great fun!

I have the Gorgon Boots. Crap indeed. It's clearly a setpiece for early into the game.

I'm still in a bit of shock that this isn't multiplayer. A game like this SCREAMS for LAN play with a friend or 2.

Prez, this game will eventually become a MMORPG. I think they'll include a LAN ability aswell, just because that'd make sense. I don't think that has been confirmed, though.

But anyway, the great thing of Torchlight is that for now you can waste your time on singleplayer and in 2010 switch to MMO pwnage.

There is also an editor tutorial on there...however it's sounding like the editor won't be released until after the first patch to the game.

Shit, the only thing I keep finding is Gorgon crap. I've already got THREE Gorgon gloves!

Funny, I got my 3rd today too - but no other Gorgon pieces.

But I have got a lot of other uniques and set pieces, so can't complain too much. My shared stash is almost full of them. It's going to take a bit before I figure out which of them are really good tho'.

BTW, Alchemist + Ember Lance = Massively OP - went from struggling with chain lightning + wand to complete easy-mode.

As you say, the Gorgon bonuses aren't huge, but there are other sets with much better bonuses. But what seems the oddest to me, is that set items (appear to) have random bonuses. I've found 2 of the Gorgon gauntlets, and they have completely different stats on them. Not sure what to make of that, because it seems to simply make them "random rares that gain extra bonuses if you were more of them".

edit: Ah, apparently it's only the Gorgon set that has random mods

Okay, the weaponsmith in simply SELLS SET UNIQUES!!!!! :O

I just bought a Boots of the Gorgon off him, which is a part of the Gorgon Set. It's a shitty set, but still.

Might be worth checking out every now and then.

Also, why are sets still so fucking worthless? Seriously? Wearing five pieces of the same set gives me a 5% movement bonus? Wow, let me go grind some bosses to get that entire set!

I will admit I was a bit skeptical as some of these guys were part of Hellgate:London stake holders team (decision makers) but they seem to be NOT making the same mistakes

It probably helps that Bill Roper isn't involved.

Dual-wield pistols FTW!
