L4D2 Scavenge Mode Revealed

Valve announces Scavenge mode is the fourth game mode in Left 4 Dead 2, offering a couple of screenshots and details on how it will work. There are hands-on previews on G4tv.com and IGN, a Scavenge Victory gameplay video and a Scavenge Sword Gameplay Video on GameVideos (as well as a Jockey gameplay video), and here's word:
Oct 8, 2009 - Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Scavenge, the fourth game mode to be included in its upcoming zombie thriller, Left 4 Dead 2.

Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.

On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.

At some point you hit entropy with Zombie game modes. What we need is more sophisticated AI in games -- i.e. not more varied styles of opponents or game types but more intelligent ones. It would be cool if they had some kind of 'brain zombies' that were able to control the others and take on a chess-style like ability. As it is now, the game gets boring quickly, like an MMO, due to shallow AI and repetition.

As much improved as this game looks over the original, I'm still going to wait until the first 50% off sale. I figure February or March, considering the time frame of the first L4D 50% off sale.

Same here

That $33 price in the 4 pack is pretty close to half off of the $50 price. I don't think we will see less for a while, and you'll be missing out on the "exclusive" weapon

I don't feel like rewarding stupid practices with a full-priced purchase is the biggest reason. The exclusive weapon thing is asinine, and only long after the L4D SDK was released, (and after at least one half-price sale) did the game give me what I felt was ample value for the money I paid, and only then, it was the community, not Valve that gave me that extra value I felt was missing.

I'd be lying if I said I don't want to play more L4D; I love the premise and gameplay, and the whole zombie apocalypse theme just does it for me. But Valve lost quite a bit with me with the L4D/L4D2 debacle, so I am in no hurry to get the sequel. I'm patient; inside 6 months I'll be able to get it on a Steam weekend sale for 20 bucks I'm sure.

Actually valve DOES have experiance with having a commander kinda guy giving orders to others. That was one of the things they were doing with TF2 before they did a total rewrite.

VultureMAN:
It makes you unable to use other weapons, it doesn't make you weaponless since you can drop it to use a weapon. Plus you can use the gas can as a melee weapon.

Going to have side with Verno on this one. Valve doesn't really do much to endear themselves to the community if you're talking pure communication. Valve's great reputation is based on content releases and lots of patch support. They're good at working, not really at chatting. Just look at the support page on the steam store. They do everything possible to make sure to hide email and phone numbers from you. Emailing support@valvesoftware.com or support@steampowered.com bounces, they force you to use a ticket system that they can ignore.

One person emailing them and actually getting an answer doesn't mean anything. Why should that impress me as a customer? Damned right they should answer, when did we come to expect so little from companies that an answer to an email should wow anyone?

We'll have to agree to disagree, as from my experiences, more often that not they have responded to my emails when I've had questions or concerns. I also know many other people with similar experiences. It's unfortunate you haven't.

Have you even tried before? Or do you just bitch about it on forums?

Here is his email address. chetf@valvesoftware.com

Sure I've tried. I'm the person around here who tells other people to try instead of bitching on forums.

But just because they don't make immediate changes, or respond, doesn't mean they don't read and take things into consideration.

And just because he responds to you doesn't mean he's communicating well with everyone else.

Why not? Chet and many of the other devs were walking around PAX, hanging out at their booth chatting with all sorts of people. They aren't like some other devs that just hire models to stand at their booths, to look pretty and cant answer a single question about the game. Most Valve employees make themselves very accessible. One of the girls from the Valve booth saw me at the ResEvil 5 PC launch party, and invited my friends and I to the private Bungie party they were going to. They are just people, not trolls guarding a dungeon that you dare not go near.

The vast majority of the community does not have time, money or whatever to go visit Valve personally. I don't see Valve flying out to every city in the world either. Let's drop this point, it's kind of silly and obvious, I feel stupid even arguing about it. No one expects Valve to make personal visits but arguing that they do communicate if you go talk to them is kind of silly because they'd be really stupid to tell you to screw off.

Just because they dont agree about all the complaints that are made, doesnt mean they arent listening. This isnt new to L4D. People have bitched and whined constantly on the forums about balance in all of their MP games. They make some changes, others they choose to leave the way they are. No matter what they do, the bitching and whining will continue.

Doesn't answer the question and you ignored a few other points in there. I'm sure a company like Valve can employ some dude to sit around all day on forums. In fact most companies in their position as a publisher have them or use QA/PR people to do it. This costs them little and gives the community both a voice and a pair of ears.

Do you follow up or just forget about it? I've gone unanswered...then I bump the ticket, complain about how long Ive waited for a response, and then hear back. Regardless, Steam Support are not the devs and are not the people to talk to about bugs and design changes.

I don't talk to them about design changes. I talk to them about product issues and have never received a helpful response, not once. I shouldn't have to followup 10 times to get an answer, that's not a glowing defense.

Would be nice if they responded to more...regardless it's still more than what the majority of game companies do.

I don't see them doing much other than posting on a blog, hosting a lan center to help test their games or show off a new product and the occasional press release. What else are they doing exactly? That's not more than most companies. $25mil ad campaign and they can't hire someone to fix up the dedicated server? 25mil and they can't afford someone to sit and answer the forum once in awhile? Their version of community outreach is ads on UFC.

Even you have to admit it, they don't do nearly enough and certainly less than many publishers and even some developers in the industry.

Funny, I doubt most of us would have that luck if we tried.

Maybe if you sent your concerns about the game to Chet, instead of complaining about it on a forum he more than likely doesnt even read, you may find yourself surprised. Have you even tried before? Or do you just bitch about it on forums?

Here is his email address. chetf@valvesoftware.com

That's a heart warming story about a boy meeting his hero but ultimately will not happen to the rest of us.

Several thousand threads about balance on the SteamPowered forums have gone unanswered.

Takes two seconds to post that kind of thing on a forum and they don't do it the majority of the time.

As I already said, no matter what they do or say, bitching and whining will continue. If they constantly responded to the thousands of posts on the forums, they'd never have time to make the actual games. They do respond to some things. Would be nice if they responded to more...regardless it's still more than what the majority of game companies do.

Scuse me? That's why pretty much anyone can email their staff and chances are they will get a response? I dont know of any other company that will do that.

Funny, I doubt most of us would have that luck if we tried. I subscribe to the dedicated server mailing list where we rarely hear from them either. Several thousand threads about balance on the SteamPowered forums have gone unanswered. This is to say nothing of their boycott responses.

I sent Chet an email asking if the PC version would be shown at PAX (when they announced the 360 version would be at PAX). He replied saying only the 360 version would be...but then invited me to Valve for a playtest...to which I ended up not going because I got the flu.

That's a heart warming story about a boy meeting his hero but ultimately will not happen to the rest of us. Your individual experience with Valve does not mean the rest of us get our hands held because we fistbumped with Chet at PAX.

Saying they don't communicate well with their consumers is a load of crap.

Valve is good at press releases, making you happy apparently and making blogs. More often than not when I want info on a game and ask Steam Support, it either goes unanswered or I get a form response. They totally bungled the entire Left 4 Dead 2 release announcement and have been playing catchup for the past 5 months. I've asked Valve directly several times for a direct answer on dedicated server issues and heard zip from them. If I was the only one I'd just say oh well they are busy fellas but when the DS server list can't get one either then they have a problem. That's ignoring the obvious balance issues with the survivors that have been ongoing for months now. Valve has been criticized not communicating with third parties too, especially with regards to Steam. Hell let's look at game releases themselves where we have no idea when or if a game will receive a preload until it just shows up in the steam client and someone sends it around, when the game will unlock or why there was a delay when it doesn't happen on time. Takes two seconds to post that kind of thing on a forum and they don't do it the majority of the time.

Valve issues a lot of press releases, don't confuse those with actual communication and don't confuse your personal experience as something the community shares equally.

Nin posting about his imaginary ignore list

Funny how you say this but still quote me so often. It's hubris enough to brag about an ignore list, it's downright hilarious to actually be so insecure as to lie about it. You're a pretty sad little fellow.
