Ubisoft Acquires Nadeo

This Press Release announces Ubisoft has acquired Nadeo, though terms of the deal with the TrackMania developer are not revealed (thanks Frans). The announcement is pretty brief, so here's the whole shebang:

Paris, France – October 05, 2009. Today, Ubisoft announced the acquisition of the development studio Nadeo, creator of TrackMania, the cult multiplayer car racing video game.

Set up in 2000 in Paris and comprising a highly talented team of developers, the Nadeo studio has won acclaim for the quality of its multiplayer technology which offers one of the best available on-line game experiences and has already notched up 10 million registered players. Its flagship game – TrackMania – has 700,000 unique players a month and is a pioneer in the sharing of creations (almost 15 million custom tracks created since 2008). It is also the first eSport franchise for racing games.

"The acquisition of Nadeo is an important step in our expansion within the on-line gaming sector", said Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer of Ubisoft. “Through Nadeo, Ubisoft will gain an expert team, one of the best on-line technologies around as well as a flagship multiplayer game that enjoys an unrivalled reputation among a loyal and committed community. We are excited about the idea of introducing TrackMania to an ever-wider audience and sharing the expertise of Nadeo's teams with our Group's other developers”.

"Joining Ubisoft is a huge opportunity for us to develop and innovate and take Nadeo to new horizons", said Florent Castelnérac, Chief Executive Officer of Nadeo. “Nadeo’s team was keen for this acquisition to happen. Like players in a community, we see ourselves as being a complementary fit with Ubisoft and believe that we can share and quickly move ahead together".

Bugger.

I mean, I have nothing but best wishes for Nadeo, and I really hope that the team have made a very large sum of money for themselves from this deal.

It's just that in game-development terms they seemed to be doing well on their own, and while on average Ubisoft seems generally better-behaved than EA, I still can't imagine that anything positive can come out of this for Trackmania itself.

Especially gutting with TM2 recently announced.

Ah well.

At least Ubi and Nadeo see eye to eye when it comes to DRM. Both were heavily into using StarForce.
The keyword in that sentence being: were.
I think the StarForce thing was blown way out of proportion, but that's the Internet way... the real shame about dropping DRM is that it became much easier to cheat in TrackMania Forever. I spend quite lot of time every day cleaning out the "fruits" of that decision from the Dedimania world records database.

Ubisoft made my other favorite PC racing game, Pod. Then they released a crappy, console only Pod 2.

Hopefully they keep a hands off approach with Nadeo.

I think Trackmania would make a great console game, if the online support is as good as it is for PCs. I play TM with a 360 gamepad.
But the PC version must be the primary focus.

Nadeo is one of the most generous and involved devs when it comes to their community. I pray that this doesn't change now that Ubi's shareholders have to be taken into consideration.

I'm a huge Trackmania fan, and I think this is good news. More money, more chance of getting their game on to shelves, more access to different regions.

And I would love to see this game on 360 or the like, Trackmania 2 I am sure is headed there. The game is very much suited to consoles (although I am a keyboard driver ). It's an arcade racer!

Another franchise bites the dust. The UBI corporation is known for taking succesfull PC games and ruining them.

I hope I'm not the only one that actually had to read that twice and then exclaimed, "What? NO."

Terrifying. I'll pray they don't fuck one of the best developers out there, but being Ubi, it'll be difficult.
