Wardell on GFWL: "They Take Over, I'm Done"

The Stardock Interview Part 2 on Shacknews continues their conversation with Stardock boss Brad Wardell. Topics include the dumbing down of strategy games, how publishers lie about sales numbers, competing with digital retailers, and Microsoft's lack of leadership on the PC as a gaming platform. On the heels of an article on Joystiq about opening Games for Windows to indie developers, Brad offers a revelatory quote about the nightmare of working with the Games for Windows LIVE platform:

I don't know. I started out as a big Games for Windows Live advocate. I intended for Elemental to be on Games for Windows Live, but then as we got closer, the Xbox group took it over more and more. And they have things where, oh, if you want to use Games for Windows Live to update your game, you have to go through [their] certification. And if you do it more than X number of times, you have to pay money. It's like, "My friends, you can't do that on the PC."

On the console, I don't have to update my game because an anti-virus program got an update and is now identifying my VB scripts as viruses and I have to apply an emergency patch. That would just add insult to injury. We've had to upgrade our games plenty of times over the years, not because we found some bug, but because some third-party program, or driver, or whatever screwed it up. If Games for Windows Live maintains that strategy and they take over, I'm done. I'm not making PC games. I would be done.

Preach what by the way? What's he going to do, give up and make console games? How is that a win?

He's obviously not going to do that, but he's at least a developer that's willing to come out and say "You know what? GfWL fucking SUCKS. Get rid of it."

Whereas every other developer tries to cram its tongue so far up Microsoft's asshole that everything they say comes out as "mmgffhhshs."

He should be talking about how they are going to invest more time and money into making Impulse better than Steam and GfWL because right now that thing has a long ways to go.

You're aware that they're a small company, right? And that they ARE making changes to Impulse, but that it's a slow process? Valve has approximately 9 billion times the funds available compared to Stardock, so it's not that hard to see why Steam is leading the pack.

As for GfWL being better than Impulse, ugh. Really?

Any game that I CAN get on Impulse, I get on Impulse. Buy once, download once, install once, play forever. Play on as many machines as you want it to. No hassle with "offline mode" (which takes 5 minutes to start up, then another five minutes while Steam doesn't realize you're offline, and checks to see if there's a fucking Steam update), and no hassle with having GfWL on murdering your framerate. (admittedly, that's only an issue in Fallout.) or DRM'ing your DLC.

To me, Impulse seems pretty good. Of course, I don't care about things like Friends lists where I can see who is playing what, or fucking "achievements."

If those things are high on your personal priority list, then yeah, Impulse doesn't rate high for you.

I think Stardock is doing pretty damn well. Everyone wants Impulse to be a Steam killer. I think Brad is just happy if it makes his company some good money, and remains a viable alternative to Steam.

To me, it is. The one thing I find very clunky about it is the activation process where a game requires a CD key, since that's EMAILED to you separately, which sucks. Steam does that much, much better. (even offering you an option to copy the key to the clipboard, so you can just CTRL+V it into the game. That's slick.)
