Best RTS games ever made and way ahead of their time.
Too bad games like this that require an IQ never seem to sell to the masses very well.
Anyways, HW kicks ass on every aspect: Art, Audio, Graphics. Love this god damn game. |

It's just a 3d camera, everything else is on the same plane. You put wheels on the ships and make gravity wells islands instead and it'd work exactly the same. The ships can and do maneuver above and below the plane. It is true 3d, but the controls and gameplay don't really give you any reason to use those features. |

Well ok I admit I'm not very familiar with SAOSE but it seems to be there is a degree of 3d, a slice or brane in full 3d space if you like. It's just a 3d camera, everything else is on the same plane. You put wheels on the ships and make gravity wells islands instead and it'd work exactly the same.
But not at a strategic/diplomatic level, goes my lament.
Really, try Sword of the Stars. It's strategy layer is in full 3d, the tactical battles are faux 3d (in that you only give commands on a 2d plane, but the ships themselves go up and down and all over the place) and it's made by people who worked on Homeworld:Cataclysm. |

n Homeworld, you play in SPACE But not at a strategic/diplomatic level, goes my lament. |

Huh? Sins of a Solar Empire is 3D, so is Homeworld Sins is played only on a 2D plane. Homeworld is the first "true" 3D RTS. In Homeworld, you play in SPACE |

Homeworld was a great game. I loved the cutscenes. The narration, the music. Outstanding.
While I enjoyed Sins for a while, it was certainly lacking something that would have made it a truly great game.

It's a 2d RTS, not a proper 3d spaceship game. Huh? Sins of a Solar Empire is 3D, so is Homeworld.
They have a different feel but they have a lot in common also. |

This could have been the basis for a galaxy-spanning MMO diplomacy/strategy game.
In the meantime you got Sins of a Solar Empire. But Homeworld brings back a lot of good memories... Sins is nothing like Homeworld though, apart from being set in space. It's a 2d RTS, not a proper 3d spaceship game.
Sword of the Stars is a lot closer to Homeworld, and it's galaxy wide strategy/diplomacy multiplayer is probably as close as you're going to get to the MMO you want. |

Yeah, Sins reminded me of Homeworld a bit. But it isn't an MMO either (my emphasis on the first M, for Massive ) and it too has a lot of grubbing for resources. What I want is a persistent online universe on the scale of Eve, but with an emphasis on hardcore Homeworld-style fleet combat for strategic control of territory, and NO BEANCOUNTING.
Indie game Vendetta Online has something like the persistent MMO universe I'm after, but it's mostly nasty twitchy 1PE single ship combat (I understand they have some capital ships now). It's a bit basic but it has some clever content and is often updated, it's worth checking out the free-trial sometime for a cruise around in space.

I fired up the demo of Homeworld 2 for a few rounds just the other day out of nostalgia. I love the cinematic look of the space battles. I feel so much more could have been done with this engine if they'd ditched all the RTS conventions (ie, resourcing) and narrow storyline that bogged it down, IMO. This could have been the basis for a galaxy-spanning MMO diplomacy/strategy game.

Every time I hear "Adagio for Strings" I think of Homeworld, and how the choir version is actually cooler than strings. Game hasn't aged too badly either.

One of my favorite games of all time. One of the few titles whose majesty and brilliance convinces me that games may just be art after all..
This is awesome. I had no idea about this! |
