2 Million BF Heroes, Update Next Week

Electronic Arts announces that Battlefield Heroes has crossed the 2 million registered user plateau, also saying that the Heroes of the Fall content update will be released Wednesday of next week for the subscription-free online third person shooter. Here's an outline of the new content, and your opportunity to gain fame and fortune (or at least fame) by naming a new map:

To celebrate this milestone, on September 30, EA will release a free ‘Heroes of the Fall’ update for the game, including a brand new map.

Set against the backdrop of autumn colors, the new map will be infantry-focused and set in a village with dozens of intersecting canals. Intense battles will play out on the bridges and crossings, while sneaky players can use the alleyways and channels to move unnoticed for sudden flanking maneuvers and rear-guard actions.

Starting today, EA is accepting proposed names for the new map at http://www.battlefieldheroes.com. Players can submit a proposed name for the soon-to-be released map, and that name may be selected by the Battlefield Heroes development team.

“Along with this new map, ‘Heroes of the Fall’ includes a slew of changes including upgrades of the Gunner class and improvements to the friends system,” said Ben Cousins, General Manager, Battlefield Heroes team. “We’ve also added a brand new ranking system for the game – players can earn cool new titles for their heroes as they play – showing everyone on the battlefield how dedicated they are.”

I hadn't even noticed this being formally released.

Don't worry. They'll start introducing micropayment-only items eventually. Maybe not even in this game, but eventually.

Be sure to check the TOS, especially the privacy section. Often the freebies can start sharing your information with a lot of third parties.

They're using the korean MMO approach, you can buy stuff like XP, character customizations and items. It's stupid to me but some people like that kind of thing and to be fair to EA I've heard that everything can be obtained without paying money if you don't want to. Not sure about advertising, I assume there would be some on loading screens with a product like this. Anyways I haven't played it myself but it's a free DL with no spyware so I'll give it a whirl sometime just for the heck of it.

All time and money that could have been better spent on a New BF3! Instead we get a BF2 1.5 patch and wa la, hackers galore already.

Sorry to break up your little rant here but this was made by an entirely different dev team. It's EA, BF3 is a certainty anyways. What are you so upset about, this is a free product?

I didn't even know this game was out. I must have been out of town when it happened.

I didn't either, big advertising failure on EA's part.

Brilliant EA, just fucking brilliant. EA is so much like MS right now. Nothing new, nothing innovative, 10 steps behind the lead man, no risk, no reward, boring, insipid games.

All the while other companies are making gems and taking risks like Bioshock and Stalker.

Same deal here, I installed it, tried for a few hours just to get on a server. For that matter couldn't even figure out how to get on a server. No server selection at all, push play and it just throws you into some random server? No thanks. Gave up, uninstalled everything that the BF Heroes installed on my PC and haven't looked back. All within 2 days, I was looking forward to this, but after the initial experience I won't even bother now.

I tried this when it hit and couldn't get addicted or into it much at all. The shooting feels so random that it's either too easy for pros, or too easy for noobs. In other words, gameplay wasn't put much into consideration but rather graphics and trinkets to suit your character up so they can make $$$.

OTOH?!?!! WOw another awesome acronym what does this mean, can you tell me in your honest humble opinion?!!!

On The Other Hand dates back to Usenet's beginnings, I'm more amazed you don't know about it. We can all type things out in Old English instead if you'd really prefer.

OTOH is never used in WOW, but that's no excuse not to use Google.

EA's just like that, trying to cash in on TF2's unique graphics I imagine.

Though Heroes looks more like legos compared to TF2.

Why do the graphics look like a rip-off of TF2?

Well, as long as they think it's a success.

I thought it was a steaming pile, expected better from DICE.
