You're correct about exclusive franchises. Not correct about the last two.
Nope, I'm spot on, you're just trying to dance around it.
Gaming on a platform where your buddies are = convenience.
That has nothing to do with convenience. Social gaming is not convenience, convenience is a tertiary factor to social gaming. Do you really not have any friends? It is the height of stupidity to suggest that purchasing a console or PC for social purposes has anything to do with platform preference. Most people do not say "Well I bought a 360 to play games with my friends but I really wanted them all to buy PCs" because that thought process isn't part of the decision making to begin with. That's YOU, you think that way. It is not convenient to just play with your friends, it's called having fun in a group dynamic. It is actually incredibly selfish to attempt to make friends fork out money to suit your own purposes by the way.
The PC would have to be a valid choice for most consumers to even be a part of your scenario and by large it isn't. Most computers are not capable of traditional gaming without upgrades. Most consumers cannot upgrade their computers or unaware of the possibility. The masses that make up the majority of the gaming industry aren't even aware that their little laptop could probably run TF2. They buy an Xbox or a Nintendo because that's what they've always done to play games. They buy an Xbox because the commercials were better. They buy a PS3 because they loved some old JRPG on the PS2. People buy things for a lot of reasons, it's ignorant and foolish to think that any single reason can be applied piecemeal to the entire market.
According to Forrester Research, there are approximately 1 billion personal computers in the world and that number will double this year or next. The most successful game in the PC gaming industry that I can recall offhand - World of Warcraft has sold barely 1/5 of number of Nintendo Wii's in the world. 1/3 of the Xbox360's and I have no idea about the PS3. You act like people are saying "Well I'd love to get a GeForce GTX295 but man that Xbox sure is easy and convenient!" when they run out to the store with money. Newsflash - the majority of the gaming market doesn't even know that is. The vast majority of computer owners in the world don't either.
The subset of the market that you and I comprise has little to do with the rest of the gaming world. You still to this day do not seem to understand that despite it being drive home repeatedly. Put simply, you are a minority. I am a minority. There are not 50 million Jerykk and Verno's in the gaming universe (and I'm sure some people around here are thankful for that). Many people work around computers all day and have no desire to do it at home, did that even occur to you at any point in your rush to say all consoles are bought because its easy to plug in an HDMI cable?
You want to make arguments about why the small hardcore market does things, fine. That's a totally different beast and requires a different discussion.
You could try to convince your buddies to switch to the superior platform but that would be inconvenient.
There is no superior platform, there are simply different platforms with different experiences, capabilities, gaming libraries and features.
Impulse purchases = convenience too. You only make impulse purchases if they are convenient to do so. If they were inconvenient and you had to go out of your way to make them, they wouldn't be impulse purchases. If you honestly believe that convenience isn't the primary appeal of consoles, you're deluding yourself.
Convenience is one of many factors, I however do not delude myself into thinking that I know and understand them all. I also do not inanely attempt to relate them all to convenience simply to suit an argument I lost by making arrogant presumptions influenced solely by my own choices, that's you.
