I've played WoW since Feb 05. (Well, I took a couple months off here and there to try other MMOs...) I tried the card game, sold my cards. (Except the baby hippogryph) Bought a couple of hats, bought the miniatures (to populate my shelf, not to play), a couple of the cooler action figures, a harcover manga collection, 2 hardcover comic collections, a shirt, a baby onsie for the coming kid, a plush murloc. I have the regular edition of the game, and the CE of both expansions. I have 2 other accounts I opened to level alts with then closed once I got the mount. My wife also plays, although she only has a couple of murloc toys.
All said, we've spent probably a couple grand. (No trips to cons or anything for us)
I spent more than that this year (and it's not over) on guns. I spent more than that last year upgrading my home entertainment center. I've probably, in almost 5 years, spent at least double that on DVDs.
Obsession? Naw, I don't think so. I like it. I think the art and monsters are cool, so I like decorating my man cave with the stuff. I don't play it every day, because I have other stuff I am doing. It's a hobby, nothing more.
Obsession is when you quit your job to play full time, your wife and kids leave you and you don't really notice, the bank hands you a foreclosure notice and you reply "Zug zug!", and you wake up in jail after driving all night to try to murder some a-hole who was camping your corpse in-game. |

It surprises me these people would spend so much with the economy being so bad right now. Save, save, save folks! Oh I don't know, with the sure to be coming inflation, saving now probably won't save you much ground... |

I've often said that I play MMOs so I don't have to drink.
Which is cheaper and better for your health? |

$1,000/year for entertainment for 2 people, where basically they got at a bare minimum 300 hours of entertainment each, that's less than $2/hour.
$500/person/year. that's less than a bottle of really good wine. irrelevant. |

That only makes the problem worse. If you have a job and your finances are healthy enough to have disposable income, fanatically saving is the worst thing you can do during a recession. Those that still have jobs need to keep the economy alive by actually spending some money.
Of course the corporate economist will want you to believe that; especially anyone who invests in the stock market. However, if you want to avoid your own personal recession (you could potentially lose your job, get a pay cut, or just need to invest in your own necessities -- ex: fix a car, repair the house, etc.), saving is the best thing you can do. Anyone who believes that spending will save the economy is really brainwashed by propaganda. All you end up doing is having no money, and, if you need it, you'll end up relying on government hand-outs (tax payer money).

As for playing games/going to conventions being unhealthy? Doing those things doesn't make you unhealthy. Doing _only_ those things, might though.
Back on topic. The grand total over 5 years came out to $4400. We spent more than that on a 3 week vacation earlier this year. For all those hours of enjoyment, all those trips, all that time with the wife, I would have to agree with the author of the article. Money well spent. |

I spend more then $1000 a year going out and drinking with friends, what's the difference between that and spending that much on a different hobby you enjoy with your friend....well besides the fact that his liver is in better condition. Both seem unhealthy. Better to invest in a hobby that enhances your health such as bicycling, surfing, skate-boarding, or if you want to save money just swim at the beach/lake or take walks at the park. A good amount of sunlight and movement are essential to physical and psychological health. Saving money is also very important today.

A grand a year? If we're assuming that WoW is all he plays, that seems fairly mild. Even now I probably still spend 500 bucks on games a year, and that's after I've DRASTICALLY scaled back my purchases. I'm sure that in the 90s I easily spent 20-30 grand on games alone, not to mention that six or seven PC upgrades that I bought at probably another 10 to 15 grand.
Like Will W says, some people spend it on games, others spend it in a bar, others spend it on golf, and yet others spend it on a car. What the fuck does it matter? But because it's a game it's apparently still considered sad? So much for games having gone mainstream.

The $600 was just on Blizzcon shwag.
He adds up the totals from about 4 years of playing, it comes out to $4,374.08, so a little over $1,000 a year on a video game.
That still seems pretty tame to me as long as he got his moneys worth. I played WoW from launch date until about 4 months ago and even now I don't feel like any of the cash I spent on it was wasted, except for those last couple months where I was severely disappointed with the game and was just lounging about until my subscription subsided. Granted I did not pay for any of the extra crap that this guy did (though I did buy all 3 collectors editions of the core game and the expansions, but I only had 1 account for those 4 years). There are definitely people worse than this guy. I personally know a few people paying for 4+ accounts, go to Blizzcon every year, and buy the in-game TCG items off Ebay (some of which go for nearly $1,000), and don't forget purchasing gold... now that is obsession.

So if someone spends $600 in WOW its called an obsession, but if they spend $600 on entertainment in other things its called entertainment? Pretty much. |

That's pretty much nothing.
People spend a hell of a lot more than that on single player games. |
