All Jedi Knight Games to Steam and D2D

Lucasartsgames tweets a clarification of the news that the Jedi Knight series of Star Wars first-person shooters (and slicers) is coming to Steam with a confirmation that this will include the entire series, saying simply: "What games from the Jedi Knight series? All of em!" In another Tweet they also indicate the series will be also coming to Direct2Drive when it is released next Wednesday.

I've been watching the comments over on the Steam forums. Well folks, as predicted, the JK and MotS releases are castrated buggy messes.

The music is gone of course cuz it was CD audio and changing that would take significant effort. There are no bug fixes, including no fixes for the problems with the 3D hardware support. There are problems with resolution changing. And some people are having problems with CD checks! I think LEC used nocd cracks to make the games run w/o CDs.

Apparently LEC may have lost the source code for these games.

It's available now - $20 for all the Jedi Knight games. I was thinking it would be more.

Also the Lucasarts Adventure pack, with both Indy games, Loom and The Dig for $9.99!!!

Hot damn!

There's also this mod for the original game engine:
JK Enhanced http://www.jkhub.net/project/show.php?projid=242
Thanks for the link... that looks awesome compared to the original game. I couldn't figure out from the website whether it works with MotS or just JK though.

The thing with DF2: JK and other games of that time is that 3D was so incredibly limited. Super low-poly models, horrid animation and crappy textures. It may have been the best way to do FPS action but compared to 2D games, the visual quality is just shit. It still doesn't bother me that much tho. I like "immersing" myself in the various eras of gaming tech. (Well, I do hate most PS1 games....can't tell wtf I'm looking at sometimes with those huge, skewed pixels and perspective probs)

There's also this mod for the original game engine:
JK Enhanced http://www.jkhub.net/project/show.php?projid=242

IMO that JK -> JA mod doesn't look that much better than the original game because they are just reusing the old textures anyway.

I hear what you guys are saying. Trust me, I'm not a graphics whore or anything, but I have this condition where dated graphics, if bad enough, actually detract from my enjoyment of an old title.

Some engines and artwork hold up better than others; DF2 didn't age all that well and that precludes me from wanting to play it again, as awesome as the gameplay was. I, like others here, am hoping for a graphical update at some point to make it a little less hard on the eyes is all.

JK is Quake 1 / Hexen 2 quality. But the gameplay itself blows those away completely for singleplayer gaming. You don't see levels as huge as those in JK in many other games, certainly not the Quakes. Graphics quality doesn't bother me much honestly. I hate to use the tired "gameplay is more important than graphics" cliche, but that's the deal for me. What was a shame with JK2 was how the "technically marvelous" Quake 3 engine couldn't handle the huge levels of JK1 apparently. Maybe Raven didn't even try though, I dunno.

Apologies - I was talking about Dark Forces 2. I wasn't clear.
Outcast has held up surprisingly well. (Technically I think Outcast used the quake 3 engine, but I can't remember). EDIT: Yep, it does. Team arena to be exact. The first game of the Jedi series, Jedi Knight DF2 just hasn't held up well imo - the characters are terribly blocky and the animations are god-awful. It might have looked good at the time, but the graphics for me actually detract from the nostalgia.

I knew which you meant. I was thinking it was Quake 2 quality, but you're right, it might look a little worse. Still looks find to me though, can't wait to replay it!

IIRC, Lucasarts reduced detail specifically so they could create huge maps with large outdoor environments, which is one of the characteristics DF2 (JK) is well-known for. If they didn't, there would be a significant performance hit.

The characters aren't as blocky, and there is more detail and smoother edges. To me it's just all around easier on the eyes. Moreover, the animations in Q2 were better IIRC.

The Quake 2 engine notorious for not being able to render huge outdoor environments without a big performance hit. It did look pretty damn good at the time, however. Both engines were designed with different goals in mind, and both of them achieved those goals.

That being said, DF2 on the JA engine would be pretty sweet. There's already a project to create DF on the JA engine underway, but it's taking forever and DF2 is much bigger than DF, so I wouldn't expect too much.

This is one of my favorite game series ever. I really wish they make another. DF2 JK is so hideous to the point of unplayable now. Great stuff back in the day. I also played the hell out of that multiplayer map Bespin. I'd guess Jedi Outcast is very playable to this day. I tried Jedi Academy again just a couple years ago and it holds up. Both of those are on the Quake 3 engine.

Jedi Knight is about Quake 2 quality, last I checked. Hope I am not in for a rude awakening there.

Anyway, here are Jedi Knight DF2 screens:

and here are some QUake 2 shots:

Funny how nostalgia plays with your brain.

I seem to recall Jedi Knight being pretty advanced for the time - it was the first time I had to deal with DirectX.

Really though, I am more looking forward to the original Dark Forces, for some reason. Republic Commando was good, but I thought Dark Forces nailed Star Wars FPS... at the time, anyway.

Really, the only way I could play the original Jedi Knight (and Mysteries of the Sith) is if they were upgraded. I tried replaying Jedi Knight a few years ago, and it looked so much like ass that it was a distraction, and I ended up quitting. Funny to think that the games were considered fairly graphically advanced at the time.

I'm not talking Crysis-like graphics - I'd be happy with Quake 2-level quality.

I'd like to see Dark Forces and Jedi Knight actually remade with better graphics, balance improvements, etc. Same with Interstate 76, Arcanum, System Shock 2 and a host of other classics.

That'd require investment beyond simply making the game compatible with current operating systems and hiring a PR guy to make hyped announcements.

Bah, you younglings. Quake 1 and QuakeWorld caused me to buy the original Diamond Monster 3D.

Rendition Verité (V1000) graphics chipset.
