More on id and Linux

About a month ago we saw comments from John Carmack indicating that Linux versions of RAGE and the new DOOM game were up in the air, as the id technical director said: "There are no firm plans for linux ports of the idTech 5 titles, but it certainly isnít off the table." Now a later email exchange with Mr. Carmack posted to the Ubuntu Forums (thanks Ant and LinuxGames) indicates that the chances they will port their Tech5 titles to Linux are nearing ever-closer to the edge of that table, with a later exchange repeating his thinking that it "probably wouldn't be all that bad to get it running on the nvidia binary drivers, but the chance of it working correctly and acceptably anywhere else would be small." Here's his overview of the situation:

The PC and Mac versions are still OpenGL 2.x.

We are not currently scheduling native linux ports. It isn't out of the question, but I don't think we will be able to justify the work. If there are hundreds of thousands of linux users playing Quake Live when we are done with Rage, that would certainly influence our decision...

My wife is pretty much a Joe Public/Smith type person, completely non-technical, she does a few docs and browses the web, youtube etc, does email, plays a few puzzle type games, listens to music, looks at the pics from her camera, or the usual everyday stuff you'd expect to do on a computer.

Her computer is a netbook running Linux, apart from flakey wifi sometimes she's got no complaints.

Linux isn't perfect, but it's far from a joke and at it's core is an extremely stable and resource friendly kernel, unlike Windows. MS lost the plot a long time ago, anyone that thinks an OS should use as much cpu and ram as Vista does is seriously deluded.
Just look on betanews for the browsers benchmarks, the worst browser is IE7 ( IE6 is history or at least it should be!!! ) but then look at all the other browsers and compare performance on XP vs Vista, if a simple everyday thing like browsing the web is still slower on Vista(and Windows 6.1 aka 7 ) than it is on XP then you know MS have failed to improve the fundamentals of it's kernel.
