The Old Republic Video Walkthrough

The Star Wars: The Old Republic Walkthrough on IGN is a multi-part video presentation on BioWare's upcoming MMORPG. Here's an explanation from our narrator, Dallas Dickinson, captain of the Nostromo, and senior content producer on the game:

Now we've been talking a lot lately about the fact that this is the first ever fully-voiced MMO, but we wanted to show that to you in action. So, we're going to give you a quick preview of Star Wars: The Old Republic; the cinematic conversation system, as well as some of the action-packed Star Wars combat that you'll get to experience when you play the game. We're going to show you a few things here, but remember this is a work-in-progress. You're going to get to see a couple of character classes, a few of our planets, and then a flashpoint in the game.

God I hate MMO's. Why can't I have my KOTOR 3? I think I'm going to cry....

Oh, and Hellbinder - please STFU. Hopefully that was polite enough for you because I said 'please'...

Lightsabers/Jedi are the problem with Star Wars games. If you make them incredibly powerful, then there is no reason to play another class. If you make it balanced then you get embarrassing stuff like KOTOR where a Jedi can be killed by a goat or some guy with a stick. The best solution would be to make them very rare or simply non-playable, but the megalomaniacs will go berserk if they can’t have their “iconic” experience.

After watching the videos, I think this is a console game. There’s nothing unique here and lots of garbage: regenerating health, perpetual meaningless combat, and comic book dialogue. I especially like how each party member is free to make random choices to determine the outcome of a quest. The pug horror stories will be the most entertaining thing about the game.

Since when are MMOs EVER revolutionary?
As PnP was an innovation to Everquest, so is game designs in Vanguard the next innovation and evolution. I see mmogs everywhere taking ideas from Vanguard Personal Flying mounts, Custom Mounts such as Beasts, Combo Maneuvers, Critical Finishers and Class based Group Team Combos/Finishers.

Though, the Open Dungeons might not catch on due to not being easy enough for people whom get the same situation spoon fed situation in instances. Plus it take much more design time and talent to make a Open World dungeons, than some Zoned Off Instance, not to mention obviously being able to have an engine that can handle it.

Bottom line is Innovation does happen, though most try to take shovel a game out.

I do think Bioware will be successful though with this full Audio. They are one of the few developers who can afford to do this and they are a higher quality developer than most and this in the long run will be good for gamers. Oh and Voice Actors too.

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

I believe they're using the Hero Engine which i theory allows them to add new content on the fly. Whether or not they take advantage of this is anyones guess, but if done well it could be interesting.

I'd hope they have a team of writers putting out mini-episode things every month, that would be something I'd gladly pay for. I'd suspect it's not going to happen though.

Also, has any mention been made of ships in this yet? Not Jump to Lightspeed style fighters, but Ebon Hawk, Millenium Falcon style personal starships.

The problem is that these things are finite. Once a player gets done playing through each class's story, what's left?

Virtually everything is finite in MMOs. You always reach a point where you're repeating some bit of content whether it be PvP or PvE, until more content is made. It's just that instead of mindless grinds and running around vacuuming up quests and completing them without even reading them, you have an actual story.

You either reroll and try another class like many do, or enjoy whatever endgame content exists.

No MMO is going to solve the problem of "How do you make unlimited, unique, and meaningful content with depth." any time soon, anyway.

But I guarantee these aspects will bring a lot of those single-player RPG fans into the MMO fold once they actually get on there and try it.

I thought SW:TOR was supposed to be a revolutionary step in MMORPGs

Since when are MMOs EVER revolutionary? Every MMO ever made has built on the concepts of previous MMOs. The first MMOs built on the concepts of pen & paper, MUDs, and single-player RPGs.

Look at World of Warcraft. It wasn't revolutionary by any means. It had all the same basic stuff as EverQuest, and just polished it.

When designing an MMO, or any game for that matter, if you try and revolutionize everything, you'll fail, your game will flop, and you'll never be taken seriously in the industry again. We've seen this happen time and time again.

MMOs are very much en evolutionary genre. Each MMO should build on its predecessors and then offer a few unique things of its own to grab players. That's the only way they succeed. WoW had the Warcraft setting, for example, as well as a very simple learning curve compared to previous MMOs, and simple appealing graphics that could run on most machines.

For SWTOR, the unique grabs are the individual class storylines that take you from level 1 to whatever the cap is, and single-player RPG elements such as the dialogue and alignment system. They also integrate those features by having group dialogue, and points where stories for classes can intersect. These are things no other MMO really has. If you don't care about those things, that's fine, then maybe it's not the MMO for you. But I guarantee these aspects will bring a lot of those single-player RPG fans into the MMO fold once they actually get on there and try it.

No MMO can be everything to everyone at the end of the day though. If you're sitting around waiting for the perfect MMO, you'll spend the rest of your life doing it.

Really disliked the lightsaber combat in this game. The saber just seems so...weak. 2-3 hits to kill a critter with a lightsaber?!?!?

There's only 2 defenses against a lightsaber. 1. Don't be where it is. (dodging/evasive maneuvers) 2. Blocking with your own lightsaber (never bought into that special metal that light saber cant cut crap).

Just wish game devs could get that right.

Compromises have to be made for the sake of game balance and specifically class balance, as well as pacing and enjoyment. What you describe would result in them having to make sure every enemy a Jedi or Sith fights is another Jedi or Sith, since that's the only "realistic" way to add challenge to the game.

This is an MMORPG, not a simulator.

I still think the game looks like shit; the cartoony character models/textures look really fucking horrible. Unfortunately, it looks like they copied more than the art style from World of Warcraft. The more I see of the UI, the more disappointed I am. I thought SW:TOR was supposed to be a revolutionary step in MMORPGs, but the UI/combat system looks pretty much copied and pasted from WoW.

I love the look of the game but the combat (at least some of it) I'm not so sure about. The light saber combat looks good (far better than blaster combat) over all though it does appear far weaker than should be. And bounty hunters don't run and hide but why not use cover? I liked the smuggler cover system except the shooting blindly from behind cover to kill a target so far away also behind cover?

Some of the videos brought back memories (not good ones) of Tabula Rasa. I know it's an MMO but why must combatants always stand out in the open? Also the cover didn't appear to make the targets any harder to hit or kill.

Hope to get into the beta at some point. Must admit the video of Guild Wars 2 has me more excited.

Is this intended as a Adult title 17+, damn that would be great? I don't think I saw any blood though, so I am thinking this is going to be the Cleaned Up version of KotOR.

I know it's a work in progress, I can only hope those Blaster sound effects were PH, they sounded a bit to hollow. If we are going to have to hear Blasters for 30+ hours then a little more solid and less high/mid tone, please.

It is still unbelievable the level most of you have sunk to. A bunchy of foul mouthed self important rude jerks.

None of you think video game and media violence has affected you yet day after day all you post is rude hateful profanity filled posts.

Truly sad how lost and blind you all are to what you are becoming.

Shame on you johnny for the way you think and act.

This is Blue's house, and if he has a problem with swearing then he can let me know and I won't swear on his boards. Apart from that there was nothing hateful or rude about my post, so why don't you take your tedious, self-obsessed moralising and go pester somebody else?

Judging from Hellbinder's post history, he's been living through an 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" moment for quite some time now. Time to put down that axe, Eugene.

Only teamwork can defeat this foe

Fuck. Off.

If you're going to make a heavy story-based MMO that's going to attract people for it's story and the Star Wars universe, don't make it compulsory to group in order to experience that story. Make grouping, raiding and other social activities voluntary, so people can play the game and socialise at their own pace.

I'd like to see if the Smuggler class has any interesting mechanics outside of combat, although if they don't include player starships it might make them a bit redundant.
