Vista/Win 7's network stack is noticeably better than XP's, true.. I run XP64, and both Vista and Win 7 (64-bit..) are noticeably slower at doing anything except networking, and even then the new stack only really helps for peer-to-peer, and even then once you've found all your peers it doesn't matter.

The shinier interface and taskbar previewing and other UI tweaks are pretty looking, but it's not enough for me.

I'm not sure what you mean about 'fucking with drivers'..

the networking on win7 is flawless compared to xp, plus you dont have to fuck with drivers, plus the taskbar is 100x more functional, plus window snapping is excellent, plus many other things

ultimately you need 64bit version to get the total performance increase, and win764 kicks the shit out of xp64 on all counts

so... thats how it is

Use Windows XP for a while, then go straight to Windows 7, and you'll see that Win 7 is still slower than XP. I'm sure more and more games will support DirectX 10+, and so I would eventually buy the cheapest version of Win7 just to run them, and maybe once I got the Core i9 or so I wouldn't care about the obvious lethargy and weird DRM-ness of Win7 and would ditch XP for good, maybe, or.. no

Well said wtf_man. Those are important things which seem like subtleties but are important.

I believe that's called kernel evolution which is what we should expect. Once you learn how to do a thing, your next steps are learning how to refine those actions to make your end results better.

Tweaktown is testing the wrong shit.

There isn't going to be that much difference between Vista and 7 in those tests.

Try comparing resource utilization at desktop idle.

There is less memory usage in 7. Test with superfetch both on and off, and Aero on and off. Look at how many processes are running in both OSes. Look at how many handles are open. Look at how much the CPU spikes as the desktop is doing nothing. Look at the boot speed improvements (drivers loaded in parallel).

When you look at those things, one can see the difference, and know that Windows 7 is much more efficient. This is why 7 can run on netbooks and older hardware, and Vista can't.
