MCV has the
announcement of the PS3 Slim, a pared down version of Sony's console that's been
the worst-kept secret in the gaming world for some time now. The news is
accompanied by a confirmation of a
PS3 price cut,
which was the second worst-kept secret in gaming over that same period. The PS3
Slim has a 120 GB hard drive, is 32% smaller and 36% lighter than its forebear,
and is said to consume 34% less power. As for pricing, the PS3 Slim will cost
€299.99, $299.00 and 29,980 yen, and the price on the current 80GB model has
been cut to those pointes as well. Word is: " UK price has yet to be confirmed."
The PS3 Slim is expected in stores by the first week in September.

Not all the system specs have been confirmed yet (ie: what's been removed). From what I've been able to find out, the ability to load a different OS has been removed. There has been some question as to whether the hard drive can be swapped out as well.
Edit: Just saw a conflicting report that the hard drive *can* still be swapped out (in the front lower right panel), but the same source of info was wrong about the power being internal (it's now external).
The new console will come standard with the recently announced firmware 3.0. A vertical stand will be made available for purchase to make the system vertical, and it will also house a Bravia Sync feature, allowing users to control the PS3 with their Bravia TV remote.
That's cool, as I have a Sony Bravia TV. But I'm guessing this will be available via Firmware for the older machines.
