Wolfenstein Leaked

A post by id Software's Peter Sokal on the Wolfenstein Forums reveals a multiplayer build of Wolfenstein has been leaked (thanks Voodoo Extreme). On a semi-related note, a new trailer that puts the "castle" back in Wolfenstein can now be found on AtomicGamer and Gamer's Hell. Back to the leak, the id Community Manager outlines the consequences of dallying with the contraband version of the supernatural shooter revival:

It was brought to our attention on Friday, 7/31 that a build of the Wolfenstein Multiplayer was leaked and is now being distributed illegally through breach of NDA and mirrors posted on the internet. I must warn anyone involved that Activision’s legal department is taking this matter very seriously.

Same applies here on the forums. If you mention that you have acquired this build, you are openly admitting to illegally obtaining the build and will be banned straight away. You have been warned.

With regards to any footage, screenshots and comments posted here and all over the internet, an important thing to keep in mind is that these were not created from a build of the game that was final or consumer ready. There’s nothing we can do about it now except continue working on the game.

Wolfenstein has been designed to retain elements that are the core of the Wolfenstein multiplayer experience, such as distinct classes and objective-based teamplay. We are also introducing new elements to the game with the Veil powers and persistent upgrades. After release we’ll make our SDK available, as well as release updates to address feedback from the competitive community.

We look forward to seeing you online upon release.

Well, just me and everyone who goes to QuakeCon...

You say that as if it's significant or something.

Which still doesn't make you and those players a majority...

Lastly - the engine hurt Q4, the AI doomed it. Guys kind of stood there shooting at you. At best they'd turn their back, run 10 feet, then turn at you again without actually having done anything other than give you a few seconds of uninterrupted shooting.

The much-vaunted transformation to a Strogg was also sadly underperforming as a narrative device. Once Kane had changed, a few signs could become readable, the torso juicers served as a healing source, and you ran faster and had more health and armor. That was it. There was no Bioshock-style scene in which control was wrestled away from you as you rampaged through a base, killing your former squad. The Makron didn't make a devil's bargain with you. None of the enemy dialogue became more intelligible, and no difficult ethical choices or diverging storylines presented themselves - fight for the humans, knowing that they'd never fully accept you as you were but following your noble intentions with honor, or fight for the strogg, knowing that despite their horrific motivations they would accept and always revere you, and that with the right tweaks you would fit neatly into their ranks. Nope, none of that, it's all OOH RAH, FIGHT MARINE GO AND KILL OOOOOOG

The opportunity for an interesting, story-driven experience was ripe. It makes me glad that id won't ever make a sequel to the first Quake.

I haven't read the whole thread (but will shortly), but the Quake series has excelled as a multiplayer series primarily in the odd numbers. The 1st and the 3rd. Yeah I know people played Quake 2 multiplayer, but for purity, it just wasn't full of win like Quake 1. Nothing can beat that speed. Then of course Quake 3 Arena was entirely MP.

The even-numbered series was always the most plot-driven story-based SP experiences. I played Quake 4 SP, thought it was excellent. I don't think I've even tried multiplayer.

You may be in the minority. I love single-player games but most people think of Quake as a multiplayer series because that's where it has really excelled.

Again, I am not saying Quake 4 was excellent, I am saying it was a fun little FPS, and I looooove FPS games.

To the people that still think this is intentional, you don't intentionally leak something when it can be detrimental. You intentionally leak what is nearly complete, totally usable and something you don't mind being out there. You intentionally leak a demo a few days early.
It's only a month before release; it's probably pretty representative of the final game but they're just issuing the warning to cover their asses and create the illusion that any issues people come across won't make it into the final game. Three to four weeks is just enough time for the story to gain momentum and for anyone interested to download it, test it and post on forums about it.

Q4 was at least twice as good as Crysis. Which isnt really saying much, but it was an semi-enjoyable one-playthrough shooter.
I concur. Q4 was bland and generic but it was a pretty enjoyable romp, whereas Crysis tried too hard and just didn't gel properly. Warhead was a much more polished experience but it was too little too late and it still didn't address the considerable performance issues.

Agreed - the plot was the best part of T:V.

Also agreed. I thought T:V's story was great. Unfortunately, the gameplay wasn't. Single-player completely failed to capture the essence of Tribes which is unsurprising since AI doesn't know how to ski.

I was obsessed with Quake 2 singleplayer when it came out, as were most of my friends... if you look back on it as a solely multiplayer achievement, you probably are more into multiplayer than single in the first place, hence your perspective is skewed.

Read : Hype for this game has been deemed sub-par, so instead of being quiet about this 'leak', we're yammering about lawyers and bans, in a vain effort to generate interest.

Maybe. The smart way to do that would be embrace it. Make fans happy. Make them feel good. Not threaten them. Ask them nicely but admit some will be curious.

Some companies aren't smart, or are hasty.

To the people that still think this is intentional, you don't intentionally leak something when it can be detrimental. You intentionally leak what is nearly complete, totally usable and something you don't mind being out there. You intentionally leak a demo a few days early. You intentionally leak the first 10 minutes of a movie. You intentionally leak a chapter of a book that stands well on its own.
In other words you intentionally leak what stands as a good advertisement and whets the appetite without truly being satisfying.
It sounds like this mp build doesn't do any of that.

Well I enjoyed it, and I know a lot of others who did... it was far from epic in any way, but it was a solid, fun singleplayer FPS.

Same here. It was typical Raven stuff, technically polished, competent gameplay but nothing groundbreaking. Certainly not the best shooter ever made but it wasn't bad either.

Everything you said was right, up until the part that implied Quake 4 wasn't terrible. You lost me there, haha.

I enjoyed the Single Player campaign quite a bit. Granted it wasn't the best FPS I've played, but it was fun.

Plus for once we actually got a Quake game with some story elements.

Ehh.. the Tribes Vengeance story telling was actually kick ass but nobody noticed.
Agreed - the plot was the best part of T:V. It was the softening of the original/core Tribes game-play mechanics that never really sat right the core audience that killed it.

Quake 4 made the same mistake that Tribes: Vengeance did. Trying to make a single-player game out of a multiplayer series.
