Valve on Racism Accusations

Destructoid has some hands-on Left 4 Dead 2 impressions in advance of a full preview based on a trip to Valve. They also have a reaction from Left 4 Dead writer Chet Faliszek to a recent editorial accusing L4D2 of racism. Here's part: "Utter insanity," says Faliszek. "There are mixed races of zombies, there are all different races of zombies that you shoot, and since we placed it in New Orleans, that makes it racist? I honestly re-read the paragraph about five times ... but when two of the characters in your game are African-American, it's a weird thing to be accused of. We're like, 'how does this work?'"

And this person is complaining about shooting black zombies. What is wrong with this world? A zombie is a zombie! I'm as white as they come, and I routinely play as Louis...why? Because he's a system's analyst, likes going to the gun range, and prefers gothy brunettes...I relate to that more than any of the other characters.

You know what, screw it. I'm going to complain to Valve that there were entirely too many pasty-ass (really, were the hospital gowns necessary?) white folk in the first game.

It's absolutely racist but no one cares because no one really wants to play L4D2 anyways. Episode 3 please, stop developing IP no one wants in the first place. We don't need three L4D's, one was plenty. TIA Valve.

Here we go again, why is it that is it only the blacks who start to cry and scream rascism. They are not happy until this world is completely black, but by then they would of nuked each other cos one isnt as black as the other.

Come on though guys, everything I've seen in the game videos so far featuring the black characters is one black cliche after another. Sure it's funny and I've seen plenty of "black" movies where they play up their own cultural stereotypes as well but it's not totally out of left field. I was just waiting for one of them to say "WHERE DA FRIED CHICKEN AT?" when I watched one of the videos a few weeks ago. It's probably a little racist in terms of playing up stereotypes but I doubt it's malicious.

I dont think its very productive to bring up the issue of race in video games, some of the comments on this thread are a testament to what happens when you do that. I guess it simple human prejudice and stupidity....

Not a problem, last I checked Asians were plenty in Crysis funny thing, Crytek changed the evil Asian enemy soldiers from Chinese to North Koreans. You can still see some of the Chinese assets left over in the content files. Killing North Koreans is politically correct enough I guess.

at least black people are featured at all in a game (as a player AND as an infected)....what about latinos and asians? they're rarely featured in FPS games. we (i'm asian) demand the same treatment.
