and Video Games has some news from the new print issue of EDGE Magazine
about RAGE, id's upcoming first-person shooting/driving game. Speaking to
id Technical Director John Carmack, Edge learned that in its current state,
RAGE, powered by id's new Tech 5 engine, runs at 60 frames-per-second on PCs and
Xbox 360, but only 20-30 FPS on the PlayStation 3. Carmack says: "The RSX is
slower than what we have in the 360. The CPU is about the same, but the 360
makes it easier to split things off, and that's what a lot of the work has been,
splitting it all into jobs on the PS3." It is not specified what improvement
over that, if any, can be expected by the time the game is released. The article
also confirms a Mac edition of the game is still in the works.

We'll get a new generation in another 3-5 years. There's no rush right now because we're still pushing this generation and it's been slower to mature than any other. Still pushing this generation? Games don't even run at full 720p resolution because the hardware isn't up to it, as is the case with Halo 3: ODST and Modern Warfare 2. But there's no point rushing out another generation at the moment - the X360 is selling well, the PS3 is still struggling to make a profit and drop its price to sensible levels, and people are still happy with the new games coming out. No doubt Microsoft will be keen to push out a new console in order to further hurt Sony's finances but with such a lead they have time to wait a while, especially with Project Natal filling the gap.
The advantage of next gen hardware will be that PCs should be much quicker to catch up and publishers are being much better about PC ports. And with multi-threading now well established we won't have the programming hurdles that faced the current generation. It's just a shame that there aren't many games coming up that show off the true power of modern PCs. What we need is a new Crysis, except for it to actually be a decent game and to be well optimised - so we need a game that's like what Crysis should have been. |
