Ultima Online Free Expansion and Free Trial

Mythic Entertainment announces the launch of Mondain's Legacy, a free seventh expansion for Ultima Online, the seminal MMORPG. The expansion will automatically download for existing subscribers, and they are taking this as an opportunity to invite former subscribers back to check out the game in its current state with a 14-day evaluation program that's open to new players as well. According to Mythic Executive Producer Jeff Hickman: "Our goal is to continually provide fresh and rewarding experiences for our thriving UO community. By opening up our 7th expansion to all players, we hope to get everyone excited for the upcoming summer release of our 8th addition, Stygian Abyss." Here's word on the trial: "For players that are new to Ultima Online or for those interested in returning to the world, they can download the 14-day free trial which now features all seven expansions, including Mondain’s Legacy. Now all players can experience the Elves, new human racial abilities and new dungeons with dozens of new monsters to battle and weapons to wield."

They should have never canned UO2, or at least made a UO2 at some point

For those who never saw the UO2 trailer, you can check it out here:

I'm thinking it would have been pretty awesome, esp. for the time.

*If I remember right, the track is a remix of a tune by the Grim Fairies, "Love Hurts" I think it was called.

I don't always drink carbonated Mexican rat piss, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

Haha UO was awesome. I remember being stripped clean by thieves while standing at the bank, PKed until I had no equipment left to put on, killed by guards for defending myself and one time when I went to my girlfriend for a few days and came back my fucking house was gone and all my items lay on the ground, mostly already picked up by passing people.

Still, I loved that game. In a lot of aspects the freedom and possibilities are still unsurpassed.

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

I'd LOVE to see UO (pre-expansion and carebeared) re-done with new graphics but keep that original freedom of exploration, freedom to build a character as you choose, and free for all PvP. Actually, it would look very similar to Oblivion but just in the Britainnia setting and an MMO.

UO could be VERY brutal at times (got ganked plenty of times), but some of those encounters with PK'ers were extremely intense. Ah the good ole days.

Oh no...Ultima Online! Wasn't this game killed by Everquest? Isn't that how things work in the MMO world, something new and shiny comes out and utterly buries whatever existed before it?

Good for you UO. Congrats on your success and longevity.
