Converting pirates to customers is a fallacy. Focus on your customers and expanding your base through them. You don't market a game at a demographic already inclined to steal your software. Word of mouth does wonders in the industry thanks to the Internet, you reach your base and they help you do the rest. Making a great game is also a big part of it but making a great game alone does not guarantee anything - some of the best games ever made sold horribly and were heavily pirated.
