I'm not saying I am Jesus Christ, I am saying I don't let the Internet culture of downloading anything you please like it's free infect my standards of right and wrong when it comes to paying people for products. Exactly. I could pirate all the games I play but that doesn't support the developers and makes it less likely more such games will be produced. And yes, I used to have to put up with shit like applying no-cd cracks but since Steam has come along I don't mess about with any of that shit anymore. Personally I'm perfectly happy for Ubisoft to try a different approach when it comes to dealing with piracy but it shouldn't impact upon the people actually buying games. I mean, I'd have bought Anno 1404 in a flash but I won't touch it because of the limited activations - I could pirate it on principle, telling myself I'll buy it if the limits are removed, but then where do I draw the line? Poorly optimised? Pirate it. Poorly supported? Pirate it. Etc. So yes, I'm now missing out on a game I REALLY want simply because the publisher has decided to fuck over legitimate customers, while the pirates play without issue. It's infuriating.
But I am sick of a lot of the attitudes here. If you want to play a game then buy it. Don't pirate it and place lots of conditions or because you think you have an entitlement to try before you buy - you don't.
I still have a lot of trouble buying full priced games on steam. I figure what ever I buy on steam is a total loss, meaning if I don't like the game, I'm SOL, i'm never getting any money back. I typically buy games on there for $5-$10 and I'd say 99% of the time I'm happy with the results. Full price games I'd say I'm about 50/50. Well, that's simply because most games aren't worth full price. Most of the time it's worth waiting for a weekend sale. Still, I've bought plenty of full priced titles that I've got great enjoyment out of - Street Fighter IV, Dawn Of War II, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Far Cry 2, Clear Sky, GRID, GTAIV. Sure they're not all without issue but the fun factor means that I have no regrets about paying full price. But I find it hard to believe that people are passionate gamers if they're happy to pirate most of the games they play. |
