1) Starforce went beyond the vocal minority. It made headlines everywhere. It became a common enemy to rail against. Most DRM doesn't work that way.
2) DRM does work. Just limitedly. The two questions is whether that limited success is outweighed by the cost involved as well as the vocal minority lost. I'd vote yes. Yes it is outweighed. Publishers will often point to numbers that imply the vocal minority is actually the largest group of pirates. I do not dispute this and, while I know it will rub people here the wrong way, I don't think you should dispute this. The vocal minority are powerusers. Pirates tend to also be powerusers. The Venn Diagrams show heavy overlap. This, though, really means very little. The vocal minority also tends to be people that put a lot of money into their computer. Pirates, likewise, tend to be people that put a lot of money into their computer. Should publishers ignore, then, people that put a lot of money into their computer? On second thought, I shouldn't ask that out loud...
3) A lot of DRM can be in how it's handled. IE make sure it adds benefit for the user. Asking us to sacrifice for the publisher without getting anything in return is a lot. Yes, we'll do it out of the goodness of our hearts if we have to (well, some of us), but this doesn't seem like that kind of situation. We don't see the value the publisher gets (if we did perhaps we'd be more willing to accept DRM.) Beyond that, we don't see what WE get out of this. Steam is genius for this. We give up some rights. We get some convenience. Many people are quite happy for this.
In the long run little of this bothers me. So long as the DRM doesn't screw up my system, stay active after I exit the game, or hurt my performance I'm ok with it. I have to be connected to the internet? Fine, whatever, personally I find an internet connection a reasonable expectation these days (although I've been without twice while wanting to play something that needed it.) Want to limit installs? Fine, I've never installed on more than 3 computers legitimately, anyway, and would be unlikely to even need that many in the future, and again, I don't think this is too unreasonable. Yes, there's that sticky situation of what happens five-ten years down the road but this really hasn't much come into play with old games. Most of them die or become virtually unplayable (DOSBox has helped this so much.) Others are available for under $5. And the community takes care of the rest, as evidenced by all the games now easily playable despite their magic decoder rings not existing.
I just don't think it's necessary. I think you're spending a good amount of money and causing a good amount of frustration for only a few captured sales. Yes, I get it, your game only sold 500,000 copies but was downloaded 5 million times and you're stuck thinking that had even 10% not pirated you'd have made so much more money but it's a fantasy to think that even an iron-clad yet 100% unobtrusive DRM would have made that kind of difference. |
