ARMA II Diary Movies

The ARMA II Website points the way to a pair of videos on the YouTube offering the third developer diary for Bohemia Interactive Studios' military shooter. The new diary is on the topic of team command. Word is: "The third installment in the series of developer diaries sees Jan Pražák, Bohemia's PR manager explaining ArmA II's Team Command interface once again using exclusive in game footage."

There are some large bugs sitting on the community buglist... things like dead AI reporting your position. I've personally seen a lot of bugs in the random spec-op missions, like being able to take over a dead teammate (the game didn't know what to do after that- there was no UI or anything, and it has happened twice so far) and helicopter issues every two seconds. The reality is the game has a large amount of bugs, but that's no reason to avoid it, or give up on it, as it still offers some fanstatic gaming moments.

AI that is completely predictable and then expect all that from a simulator like ArmA2.

I truly love that aspect of Arma 2. The computer AI is brutal... and that's a breath of fresh air. Not since Opflash have I felt what it's like to be running for my life in a forest

I played single player and will again if they release an expansion or some good player made missions will be released.
But right now only multiplayer and the mission editor are all I need.

I saw some bugs, but after 1.02 most of them are gone and they were never really severe before that (the worst was that I had to reload or restart a mission because, as in ArmA and OFP, some script messed up or an AI didnt take the route that he was probably supposed to take. Some of them were also caused by me because for example I thought the AI wouldnt be that smart (they can also hear and communicate with each other and dont always stand there around the corner and wait for you to shoot em).
Most of those bugs actually reminded me of other games that people claim to be polished. So, I really dont see what the fuss is all about.

Of course its not polished well, but seriously, how many that complex games have you played in the recent past? Developed by such a small developer?
Normally I am a perfectionist, but here I cant understand at all why so many people whine about it. I guess they never played OFP or ArmA and never liked those either. ArmA 2 is actually far more polished than OFP or ArmA were at their release. So to say that they didnt learn is nothing more than ignorant bashing. As I said before in some thread, people seem to be too used to dumbed down console ports with overly simple controls, AI that is completely predictable and then expect all that from a simulator like ArmA2. I remember one guy from my last LAN that instantly uninstalled it after being shot in the back while sprinting over a field without cover. His exact words were "WTF this shit game is cheating".
One of them even whined about the random aspects the game had. He failed one mission and then tried to outflank the AIs that killed him before, but they were randomly placed and were at a different position than last time and he died again to them because he tried to play this game like a generic shooter. God was he mad at the game for that...

Arma2 is what.. the 3rd iteration of the same product, on the same code base - by now it should be rock solid.

More ignorance. It was rewritten and only parts were imported, and if you ever had something to do with software, you would know that even importing parts of old software and use it in new versions can be a disaster and needs much work to run properly.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

I have never had a crash or freeze up in the retail version of ARMA2...yet. Time played; around 100 hours or so. Thus that video meant zero to me. i7/P6T SE with an ati 4770 on Win 7 version 7600.

From what I understand the codebase was rewritten for Arma (or at least, a very large chunk of it) but yes, it should be fairly solid by now. In truth, there are parts of Arma2 that are pretty solid (the editor, for one) but whoever is behind the scripting needs to learn a thing or two.

ABSOLUTELY spot on movie.

To the guy who thinks that we shouldn't expect something this complex to be solid - I call bullshit. Arma2 is what.. the 3rd iteration of the same product, on the same code base - by now it should be rock solid.

I really love this game. The demo, my Lordie, that POS should never have seen the light of day. The full retail performs light-years ahead of it. The scope alone makes it a winner in my book.

I haven't got this yet, but hope to at some point. I hope they can get it polished before OpFlash 2 comes out, because I think otherwise they will lose many potential sales.

Whether it is true or not that these games are "equivalent", I think there is a large perception that they are, and I am guessing that OpFlash has more money behind it.

I love Arma2, but I agree that the game (mostly anything related to singleplayer) is full of bugs. The game isn't a total disaster, but bizarre things happen all the time (especially related to choppers!).

The docs could also use some work.

Good luck getting things patched. You will wait a few years and by then BIS will forget about it as they prepare to make Arma 3 (that is if they are still in business).

Playing Arma singleplayer has never really appealed to me, I just don't like AI coop no matter what game it is. Playing through the campaign coop with some dudes as your squad, using teamspeak, now that sounds pretty good.

However, once you've played in a 50vs 50 pvp battle with proper team coordination, like in charlie foxtrot (cfarma2.com), everything else pales in comparison.

I love ARMA 2 as well. But there are bugs and they are not overrated. The tutorial missions, squad control,sp mission scripts.... once these areas are fixed, I will prolly be in heaven. hehhhehhe

The main bugs are performance related (graphics and A.I. imho. And for anyone to expect a game with this much code to be tight at release, you`d have to have rocks for brains.

I hosted some mp maps with quite a few A.I., maxed out vis settings, no AA/AF. And the game looked amazing, and no hiccups performancewise. Gameplay was FAST. The A.I. was sweet to play against.

Once BIS can wrestle the kind of performance we get in mp, into the sp campaigne, alot of minds are gonna swing into positive gear!

Giving a fairly blunt non-fanboi review of the game with the current patches?
I'm interested in the game, but still have a bad taste in my mouth from Operation Flashpoint, and ARMA II's demo.

This game is really awesome. IMO the best game since 2 years. Actually more because I finally found a game again that I can play regularly in multiplayer.
The bugs are overhyped and that "argument" is really getting old...

... when it's this buggy it precludes anything but being crap.

"exclusive in game footage"
Is it really exclusive if the game is already out?

And despite its bugs its an AWESOME game! Nothing like blowing a Hind out of the sky with a stinger & see it swirl around on fire & explode hitting the ground!
