Today is a pretty significant anniversary as far as we're concerned, as it is the anniversary of the full version of QUAKE, which started appearing in customer mailboxes 13 years ago today. It was in anticipation of this 3D first-person shooter from id Software that originally inspired the creation of the website that became Blue's News. Happy birthday QUAKE!

Doom was all software, there was no separate render for 3D GFX cards. Also, the game itself wasn't true 3D, just a pretend version of it. You could be up on a wall 100 foot high, and a pinky demon at the foot of that wall could still hurt you (and you him), because the game saw and calculated everything in 2D.

Quake was the first real 3D game that id did, though Ultima Underworld's engine was doing true 3D LONG before that. I think that id didn't start supporting 3D GFX cards until Quake 2, but I'm not sure about that.
