Serious Sam 3 Gets Serious Graphics

Serious Sam 3 will not use the cartoon-style graphics used by the first two installments in the shooter series, Croteam informs Eurogamer. Croteam honcho Roman Ribaric tells them they are still not ready to reveal any new features just yet, but they are changing the look of the series: "However, I believe Serious Sam fans would want to hear the following two things. First, Serious Sam 3 will play like the original Serious Sam. And second, we'll leave the cartoony look behind," says Ribaric. "As for standing up to other games: simply, if it's good to play, it's good to play. Serious Sam games belong to their own unique fast-paced FPS genre and should best be compared to previous Serious Sam games." They also report the possibility that Serious Sam HD may make PS3.

The invisible unpassable barriers really turned me off, i guess they
where due to consolites. It just didnt feel the same, something
was lost somewhere.
But ill look at the follow up as long as coop persists and drm can be
worked around
I own all 3. We prefer the first 2.

Serious Sam 2 was too watered down as compared to the first. The levels were smaller, and there was a paucity of enemies as compared to the first. Remember in the first edition how you circle-strafed and back-pedaled for what seemed like forever while killing a billion enemies? And how you were physically almost out of breath by the time you killed your last enemy? These were the things that made Serious Sam such a visceral joy, and they were sorely under-represented in the sequel.

What about SS2 turned people off so much? I played both, they both got extremely boring quick in single player, but were a blast in coop. What about SS2 was so much worse than SS1?

Correct. If someone says they didn't like Serious Sam the first thing you must ask is "Did you play co-op?" If their answer is no then by law you are allowed to 1. Punch them in gut 2. Ignore their opinion.

Serious Sam is the Diablo 2 of FPSes. It's a great LAN party game to play with friends while drinking heavily and eating really unhealthy snacks. Of course most gamers probably do the drinking heavily part without the friends already, but if you've moved out of your mom's basement maybe you too can find some friends.

If you quit Painkiller half way then you missed some crazy level design and enemies. Go try it again.

Yes, it is. Painkiller had gritty, dark and very, very gothic graphics ... and it was such a blast to play this fast and hilarious shooter.

Really? I never got into it. I played through half the game and lost interest. To me, the dark, gothic setting was what killed it for me.

Serious Sam was always about killing metric assloads of bad guys in a kinetic, crazy, hyper setting. The action itself is cartoony, so why not match the gameplay with a sympathetic art aesthetic.

The second one also had much smaller levels and the enemy "waves" were a lot smaller too.

What about SS2 was so much worse than SS1?

The controls, I hear.

Serious Sam 2 was a serious misstep - how could Croteam screw the Serious Sam formula up so badly?

Well, whatever they call the graphics, "cartoony", or "realistic", is irrelevant.

This series lives or dies on its gameplay, so they better worry less about the graphics and more about making the third entry more like the First Edition. I welcome a realistic look but also hope they keep the levels bright. It's nice to be able to see things for a change.

As long as it plays like Serious Sam (Both parts) and not SS2 I'm happy. I can still remember the feeling the Serious Sam 2 demo gave me--it was not pleasant.

Yeah, I guess I could really go both ways on that. I'd say the first was cartoony. Not in a cel shaded kind of way, but it had really bright colors, and just sort of a cartoony feel to it. I thought it went well with the whole over-the-top theme.

I don't know that I would want a cel shaded look, but a dark 'gritty' look doesn't sound appealing either.

It sounds good to me. I don't recall thinking the graphics in Sam 1 were cartoony (although I'm sure they were, to some degree).

I'm really not sure that this is a good thing. I guess I'd have to see it.
