11. Re: Game Reviews Mar 14, 2012, 16:24 Shok

Back in the 80's and early 90's I used to trust most game reviews from CGW. They had specific reviewers who specialized in different game genres and it was like an old friend coming back month after month telling you about a new game and whether it was worth buying. Alan Emrich used to review wargames and strategy games and he loved including tables of unit values and other game details. I still have a page from his review of the original Warlords that I keep with the manual. The internet eventually killed off CGW but at that point it was in the pockets of the advertisers anyway.

EDIT: by the way, CGW museum is great for reading classic game reviews.

For some real nostalgia flavor they should get Scorpia to write a strategy guide for it.

I think they are under pressure to get it out this year to appease all the WoW gamers who renewed for a year after falling for the carrot dangling ploy.

Although the console will not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.

So they could still sell games on SD cards or proprietary cartridges I would think.

I see lots of stock in stores still priced at $60. So I won't be buying it anytime soon.

I would get on the Populous/Powermonger remake bandwagon but the Populous DS version that came out a few years back ruined my hope it could be done correctly.

And they've been making it since 2008. Think of all that DLC they will have created! Seriously, though, I am looking forward to it after watching the trailer today.

The article on ARS about the longterm investigation of the Anon guy in Chicago is interesting. It helps they had an inside informant but the wireless router snooping and other forensics the article details is pretty fascinating.

Q. What didnít work out as planned or expected?

Initially, we started off the Heroic dungeons at too high of a difficulty.

And the regular dungeons weren't too difficult? And the healing classes weren't fubarred? There was a lot more wrong than difficult heroics...

From the Windows 8-Ball Consumer Preview article:

In its current form, I feel Windows 8 is woefully inadequate for desktop power users.

That about sums it up for my experience with Windows 8 as well. I just installed it on an old laptop to see what it was like and it's a joke. There is no option to boot to desktop mode. Windows XP let you go back to the older 98/2k windows theme (although I never did). In Win8 it's their metro ui or nothing apparently.

Windows 8 feels like a console version of an operating system.

AI War is the real steal here. $5.77 for the game and all expansions is just crazy. These devs still release regular patches at least monthly, if not more, for the game and have very helpful and active forums. The gameplay is a hybrid of RTS with 4x and even tower defense. And with spectacular AI. And tens of thousands of ships in the late stages of big games. It's like no other game and will only get better as they work on it and release upcoming expansions.

I enabled AO in Skyrim using nvidiainspector a few months ago using the beta drivers and the framerate hit was terrible on my GTX560. I'd be surprised to see if they really did make the hit less severe.
