I wonder if this issue will precipitate a price drop on 970s. I'd been considering one to replace my current lemon r9 280x which has bad artifacting problems.

I don't think any bad apple was shielded here so *shrug* and no one said the system was perfect but likewise it doesn't feel broken to me. If this guy was actually shielded and still working then I would be as upset as others. Regardless I'm not trying to champion law enforcement as a whole here, I just think that the punishment fits the crime in this case.

Two things. First, I think his sentence is lighter than a regular person would have received. No two cases are going to be identical, but we've seen people getting jail time for this kind of thing, and those cases didn't even involve an abuse of power or violation of rights by government agent like this one.

Second, this is hardly the only case where a cop has been shielded by the system. In fact, if it weren't for other cases of abuse by the CHP coming to light recently, and increasing the amount of scrutiny by the media, this probably would have been swept under the rug too. I'm glad these things are starting to get more attention now. But we have a LONG way to go to reform the system. Getting rid of the bullshit grand jury system for dealing with police and other government officials would be a good start.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge that there are good, even great, professional officers of the law who bust their asses to keep the public safe and do their job ethically. However, those men and women now seem to be very much in the minority

Quite the opposite, we wouldn't have a functioning system of government if that was the case. It's easy to snipe headlines and simply ignore that the majority perform admirably under challenging conditions every day doing a job that most of us don't want to.

As long as this supposedly functioning system continues to shield the bad apples and other connected folks from equal consequences to those that regular people face, it is broken. Hell, given the position of authority and abuse of that power, cops should face more severe penalties, not less.

Yeah, Kittens is just ridiculous. I did buy in for $35, just because it seemed like it would be a fun game to play when we want something simple (and have probably been drinking a fair bit). Seemed kinda like a fast version of Munchkin

That's the stretch goal I really wanted to see. The Matrix really needed some more depth and personality. Good to see them beefing up that aspect. Can't wait for this to be released!

I think people are realizing that crowdfunding isn't a panacea, so hopefully they'll be smarter about what they throw money at. I think the concept will remain solid though and people will continue to fund things that they really want to see happen. I've gotten some good games out of Kickstarter, and no failures so far. I've actually started backing a few non-game projects now too, so I'll have to see how those turn out. I like having the option to back these projects though.

That's 10,000% funded.

I know The Oatmeal is beloved and all, but what the actual fuck?

Kind of breaks one of the modern board / card game rules, which is don't kick someone out the game (might not matter too much of rounds are fast). Still, it looks intriguing and fun. I used to love playing the Mad card game when I was a kid, and this has a similar vibe.

New update: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/elanlee/exploding-kittens/posts/1112751

Thanks, nin. I hope they don't do stretch goals. None are needed. And I'm glad they don't have silly tiers like "$10,000 - Matt drives to your house and gives you a ride in his Tesla!" The game sounds completely designed and play-tested, if it's ready to go, just print and ship once the KS is up. I'm very tempted, even if a little tapped out after xmas.

They've already exceeded their goal by orders of magnitude. Seems like anything they would put up as a stretch goal should already be included. Short of diamond-dusted card backs, what else are they gonna do?

My understanding is that people aren't using it for quality of life, but to find things like corrupted areas and such to get the lootz.

Yeah, I hope they're doing well too. I buy a supporter pack about twice a year just to chip in. It's nice that you don't have to, but I do want to see the game continue. Some of the Mtxs are pretty cool too.

I could see a 30 day jail sentence as reasonable but five years? Waaaay over the top and not beneficial to anyone.

30 days? A huge waste of manpower and a totally not insignificant chance that the SWAT team shoots someone in the raided place. Throw him away for life. He's 33 years old, it's not like a little kid did it.

5 years is a pretty long time. Seems appropriate in this case. I could certainly see a much longer sentence if someone had been killed or injured.

Yes, Dragonfall is much better as the overall story goes but there's still a ton of irksome little things with the game like not being able to swap items on the fly, use heal spells whenever, it's even just cumbersome using inventory. Technically, the game is still pretty frustrating. And tactically it's pretty shallow. If they were fixing all these things I might take the plunge, but as it is I'll be waiting for the inevitable sale on it instead. Can't say I find their stretch goals in anyway inspiring either.
Enhanced controls, including things like item swapping between characters, was added at the $100K goal. Also includes the ability to toggle turn mode on to better position your team, which I really like as well.

Wow. They're about to hit $350K already. I haven't even had a chance to back it yet. Still looking over the levels, but I'm probably in for $75. I hope they hit all their stretch goals. Some of those sound like they'll make for a much better experience.

Is there general agreement among scientists that humans have evolved over time, or not? (This phrasing generally makes it easier for people to accept the reality of evolution, since it's not asking about their personal beliefs.)

It's a shitty question, and I can see education playing a role in understanding the different ways that question can be taken.

Is it asking about origins? Is it asking about substantial evolution since 'humanity' has existed? Are they asking if there's been speciation among humans?

Rotten article all around. But no surprise there.
That question is probably the one that I would take issue with the least. It doesn't mention origins, and the theory doesn't address origins, so I don't see an issue there. You're basically inventing separate questions from what was asked.

No. I've defended Wheeler here. Not saying he's good, but saying wait and see. People often get really irate when someone goes from the industry to a position such as this, but it's hard to avoid that because you need someone in this position that really knows the industry, and how can someone have that without having been in the industry?
Not really. You need someone that will represent the interests of the people. They will need a staff that understands the details of the industry and they'll need a finely-tuned bullshit detector in addition to a high degree of skepticism regarding anything the industry tells them.

Beamer wrote on Jan 9, 2015, 11:38:
But that doesn't mean they're tainted. It makes them more open-minded, but it doesn't mean their allegiance doesn't follow. Wheeler's paycheck no longer comes from the cable companies. He no longer represents them, he more represents himself if anything. Some people don't care about this. Most do. And most change.
It absolutely does mean they're tainted. They almost always go right back to that same industry once their tour in office is done. That certainly makes for a conflict of interest.

Beamer wrote on Jan 9, 2015, 11:38:
Have you guys ever switched jobs? Especially to a competitor? You spend years at one job, talking about how much you hate the competitor. Then they give you a job offer and suddenly you see the other side of the argument. You don't come in deliberately doing things that sabotage your new employer. You suddenly see how some of the things you thought before may have been wrong or misguided.
That's not even close to the same thing as being in a position to regulate the entire industry and actually representing the interests of public. Business pretty much hates anything that doesn't allow them to maximize their profits, which is often in direct conflict with what is best for the country as a whole, which is why we have regulation to begin with. I don't want someone who's going to hold back on doing what is in the public interest because he thinks it might make it hard to find a job in the industry again when he leaves office.

Beamer wrote on Jan 9, 2015, 11:38:
But until he actually does something, and what he does actually does something, I'm also not celebrating or applauding him. Benefit of the doubt means neutral, not positive. You get positivity for doing something right, not alluding to doing something right or attempting to do something right.
I'm fine with that, but I'm still pretty skeptical that he's actually going to do something positive, rather than something that ends up only paying lip-service to net neutrality, while allowing business as usual to continue.

Some sites have done a good job with their updates. I like what Ars Technica did with their site. A lot of sites do make a mess of things though, and there's a lot more ways to get it wrong than right.

The FCC has the power to reclassify them as Title II, they've done reclassification like that before. I don't see that anything they've proposed would require Congress to do anything at all, unless they want to implement some new classification altogether or something along those lines. Not that I think they're actually going to do that, though. They'll probably do something stupid that won't solve any problems and will end up simply letting companies continue to screw their customers over as usual.

I picked up a few as well. South Park, Starpoint Gemini 2, Kerbal Space Program, Defense Grid 2, The Wolf Among Us, and some Rocksmith DLC.

Nothing else has hit the right price point for me yet. I did manage to set up a list at IsThereAnyDeal though.
