3. Ballmer Describes 360 Warranty Painful Jul 31, 2007, 07:57 Jim

Well THATS what you get when you force your company into markets that other companies have been successful at just because you gotta have a piece of the pie.

Didn't MS lose big-time on the 1st gen XBoxes? Now this. Maybe they should reconsider what they are doing in the gaming console business and concentrate on their core focus.

Its all about GREED, and this one came back and bit them.

1.9 BILLION dollars? I think you can buy a nuclear submarine for that much.

Likewise I think MS is pissing into the wind trying to chase Google, butthere are no hard numbers to show all their misquided ventures in that department.

if the games were free. Isn't that the way broadcast television works?

Or even something like $15-20 per game would be fair.

Agreed. Graphics look nice and all, but its hard to get a good impression of what a game will do unless you show the audience the "mundane" aspects. Show a video of 60 contiguous seconds of gameplay from the perspective of a single player, playing as any player would during the coruse of an average game.

China executes former food and drug safety chief.

Can I just be the first to say, wow.

Yeah, if the US doled out capital punishment for corruption, DC would be a ghost town.

16. Weather Jul 10, 2007, 13:14 Jim

Yeah its summer, and it can get hot in the summer. Nothing new there. Its just like in the winter when we get 6 inches of snow and it becomes a national news story. There was a time when seasonal weather didn't make headlines outside of the weather forecast. It can't be a prefect 72 degrees and sunny every day.

That reminds me, it was 3 years ago this coming week that I visited Death Valley, California. I think it was between 123 and 128 daytime high, and 90-95 overnight low.

So let's assume they get $200 for each ecksbocks 360, they'd need to have sold 5,000,000 ecksbockses to cover the cost of this charge. And we know it's not very likely they get $200 apiece. Wow!

"Though an expert can analyze the log to try to track down the problem, you shouldn't try to do any advanced analysis yourself unless you possess relevant expertise. Instead, simply upload the log file to a HijackThis Web site, and ask the community there to analyze it for you."

thats right, dont bother trying, get someone else to do it for you. sheesh.

Also send them your root password in case they need to check your settings and configs.

Hi guys, back from the great states of NV, AZ and CA having had a thoroughly great time. Weather was good (predictably, but hey) food was up and down (but always is to Europeans in the USA).

Glad to hear you had a good trip. Besides the movie, what else did you get to see in the great states of NV, AZ, and CA? I've been to the Southwest 4 times now and can't wait to go back!

The way I read the headline is that a human was reared in a labatory to post-pubescense and then frozen. Perhaps a solution to overpopulation?

Not only that, but it was the first baby born fron an egg.

Yeah the headline was a funny play on words. They could have said "they're creating a cloned army" and it would have practially meant the same thing :D.

2. WTF weather Jul 2, 2007, 11:07 Jim

I agree that the daytime weather during this past weekend has been 10/10. It has been surprisingly low humidity also, very rare for this time of year. However, 2 scheduled observatory nights (our usualy Saturday night at Seagrave and a special Sunday night opening of Ladd to view the Venus/Saturn conjunction) were quite different.

Saturday:
Sunrise: clear
Noon: clear
Sunset: clear
8:45pm (just arriving at the observatory- dark, ominous cloud bank in the west.
9:10pm: complete overcast
9:15pm: rain
9:25pm: clear (too bad we already slammed all the roofs shut)
Midnight: cloudy

Sunday:
sunrise: clear
Noon: clear, fair weather clouds
sunset: dark ominous clouds in the north/west
9:00: almost clear enough to occasionally view venus/saturn
9:30; Rain, again telescopes being shoved away and roofs slammed shut at record speed.
10:00: clear, nice moonrise

WTF, depsite this "clear" weather we got rained out on both observing nights.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. It will probably the first move since LotR trilogy that I'll actually go out to the cinema to see.

7. Re: APOD Jun 28, 2007, 12:06 Jim

That is a might impressive picture from APOD.

Yeah, we've had Ron Dantowitz give us talks at least a couple of times during the past few years. During his visit last year he showed us some of this stuff and hinted that in the near future we'll likely be able to resolve rover tracks on the moon from the Apollo missions using ground-based telescopes.

Its also interesting to note that the Clay Center Observatory is not very far from here, and our weather isn't exactly that great.
