I thought I was seeing things earlier, scrolled down for the ItB update (when the sun was still up), then I just noticed, only this section was titled different- it threw me off for a minute.

If I were in Chi-town during the summer I'd be sure to catch a game at Wrigley -- hopefully a day game.

I'd second that. Also there has been a little bit of chatter in our group about a possible visit to Chicago, among the places we'd go would be:

  • Yerkes Observatory (largest refractor in the world):

  • Adler Planetarium:

Watching your favorite team play like pussies on national TV? It doesn't get much worse than that ...

Watching your favorite team go 17-0 from the second-to-last row in the nosebleed section--pretty darn good.

Brady continues his record-breaking season with a 92.9 completion percentage.

    16. The 50 Greatest Arcade Cabinets Jan 11, 2008, 15:25 Jim

They had the F-114 game at the old Spring Lake Beach Penny Arcade. I remember playing it since I don't know, before we had an Atari 2600 I think. They had games much old than that even.

They tore down the old Penny Arcade the same year we moved away from the lake. They did rebuild it, and they kept many of the old games, but the place just ain't the same as it used to be. I'd bet they even still have F-114 there.

A college roommate came back from a night on the town and was going on about how he almost "defenestrated" someone. I had to look that one up. Per wiki:

The first thing I learned in college was the word defenestration. When everyone checked into the dorms they got a copy of the do's and don'ts of residence hall living, and one of the items on the list was that defenestration was strictly prohibited. Of course we didn't have Google or Wikipedia back then, but just about everyone had a copy of those little red books called dictionaries.

With most of the major dorm buildings on campus being 8 stories or more, defenestration was a fairly common (almost daily) practice.

I don't recall ever hearing the plural of "math" used anywhere. I wouldn't even know what an appropriate moment to use such a word would be, and I'm usually good at coming up with my own vocabulary and grammar rules.

Perhaps this would be a good time for you to fulfill your resolution Blue and show me how to use this "new" word.

Why is BBC News all of a sudden giving English standard units instead of metric? Have they gone back?

    40. cliche list Jan 1, 2008, 11:11 Jim

Only one of my most hated cliches was on the list

    "x is the new y"

Other ones I'd like to see die in 2008 are:

    "2.0" being appended to everything.
"Its like x on steroids" to describe larger or more heavy-duty items.

After it finished downloading I spent about an hour playing through the first 16 levels. Pretty neat.

Blue, your endorsement of Portal has finally sold me on the game. I think I was the last one here who hadn't played it yet- its downloading to my work PC at this moment.

16-0 means nothing without the ring.

True, but there's no harm in breaking some records along the way.

Personally, I'd be more concerned about the situation today than the old cold war.

I've often thought the same thing. Bring back the cold war. It was during the cold war we did cool shit like go to the moon. And the world was more at peace, or at least more geopolitically stable. Long live the USSR.

I have an LCD that clicks all the time when its warming up.

I noticed just the opposite. I had gotten so used to my old CRT clicking during certain events (start up, shut down, playing games, etc) that it seemed odd that when I replaced it with an LCD a few months ago I noticed it NOT clicking. I don't think its clicked once, not even when I turn it on or off. And none of that annoying "crackling" I used to get when I shut the CRT off either.
