7. Touch Mouse Aug 24, 2011, 13:03 Jim

Am I the only one who thinks the word "touch" is rather peculiar for a product name? When Apple first released their Ipod with this name it took me a while to realize that it wasn't a joke.

China overtaking U.S. as top market for PCs

IE6's last stand.

Another copycat idea from MS. What I don't get is why they don't copycat the simplicity of the Mac OS UI. Seems every version gets more convoluted (control panels anyone?), and having to STILL click on and drag scroll bars in Windows 7 is really annoying.

3. why not finish video games? Aug 17, 2011, 19:27 Jim

Here's my list:

1. Knowing how to solve a level/puzzle, but after 5 attempts still cannot get through it.
2. Times missions, having to complete a set of tasks within a certain, very restrictive amount of time (see #1).
3. Having to start at the beginning of a level/area after dying and not being able to make a save point.
4. Repetitive crap or unnecessary difficulty without much creativity (takes 50 rockets to kill something).
5. Linearity and/or lack of openendedness.

Surprisingly, Half-Life 2 exhibited at least 2 of these, but still kept me engaged enough to finish the game more than once.

I like to be challenged, but not frustrated. I pretty much know what to look for nowadays which results in my not buying many games because I know I won't finish or enjoy them fully.

Five bucks says it got wallsocketed, especially as it was performing poorly before it got rained on.

I've owned many sets of computer speakers and they all sucked. I even spent 200 bones on a "good" set once, only to find out that they required a custom software driver that didn't get supported after a year or so. Next version of Windows they got junked. Now I just accept the fact that computer speakers are trash and never spend more than $20 on them. Someday I'll put together a decent home theater system and get some good speakers, but my old Sharp 27" tube TV still plays good for now....

Heh, I just saw the "suckdisk" episode of TNG again about a week ago, I think it had been 10 years since I saw it last.

I would think that waiting until a heat wave is in progress to go air conditioner shopping will end in failure anyway.

Hot weather is better than winter. It was 7 years ago this week that I visited Death Valley, experiencing 128 degree daytime highs and 95 degree nighttime lows (hey, if you're going to go to Death Valley, you may as well go during the hottest time of the year to get the full experience). You don't need to ask why it is called Furnace Creek if you go in July.

Technically, Apollo 8 was the first to reach the Moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first to reach the surface] of the Moon.

Today is also the 35th anniversary of the first landing on Mars by the Viking 1 lander.

I'm looking forward to playing these. I didn't even realize there was a mapmaking contest going on, or even that there was Portal 2 SDK out for making maps.
