News Comments > IL-2 Sturmovik Beta Patch
1. Nice Jan 8, 2008, 13:07 Bet

Very nice. Especially the part where they spent some quality time with Geforce 8800s, which weren't even conceivable in 2001 when the engine's first iteration hit store shelves.

The visibility range increase sounds dramatic, though I wonder if they've managed to get over the whole 'enemy aircraft at 6 miles looks like 5 pixels at 1600x1200' deal. The part that makes full realism servers kind of suck. Without tags and the ability to identify aircraft at range it makes being a non-fighter on Adwwar.com stressful. Although you sometimes get an inadvertent escort when a friendly fighter pursues his pixel contact (being you) and discovers a bomber to shepherd.

Awesome that they're still finding time to work on IL-2 when they must be focusing almost completely on the Storm of War engine/games.

JFK is already dead so I don't think they have anything to fear from him, so unlikely. Although it would be good press for the game, exploiting that connection to history. Mourned hero president served on one, you should too!

Release the game already! Both games, even. They were both supposed to be out by now. Need my PT boat and commercial zombie fix.

I know GTA and GTA2 are free from Rockstar I just wish they were free on Steam without needing to buy the package.

Was expecting them to be In Account already since they're free. A shame they're not

Beyond any UI issues on actually getting things done, how are you supposed to quit the game?

Alt-Q. That and Ctrl-Q are the lesser used but still common quit commands for programs. Check out post 15 for links to the game documentation.

Apparently men as you qualify them can not properly express themselves in the English language.

I guess not knowing the difference between I'll and I'm is what causes one to purchase a mendacious doctorate degree.

Nvidia Omega drivers...it's been so long. So long. They call to my 8800. I cannot resist.

They're even based on the official drivers newer than what I'm running. Hotness.

News Comments > ArmA: Armed Assault Beta Patch
15. Re: No subject Dec 23, 2007, 16:29 Bet

I wonder if some gamers EVER blame the developers for screw ups in their game instead of blaming the publishers all the time, that is getting OLD too. Developers are the ones who create the bugs and do testing as well. Developers don't just hand a game to a QA team on the publisher without testing it internally.

Until the publisher allows the developers to remove the copy protection on the game, I put the blame for most things pretty squarely on the publisher, especially lack of support. Or in this case, on ArmA's FIVE publishers. Or is it six? Wonder how many QA staff spread out between those publishers are producing constructive bug reports.

Pretty sure that for at least 3 of the publishers, there are zero QA testers for gameplay bugs. BIS is a small developer, they're at the mercy of their publishers for how they get paid. And the mistakes of the publishers trickle down to both them and us.

Probably not. They likely just went from being called 'beta' to being WHQL certified.

The anti-teamstacking option would probably make this game a lot more friendly to the average player. Wonder how many servers will enable it.

Good stuff. I'm glad you still hang around here and without us having to summon you.

I don't know what to believe anymore. I...just...don't know.

When is the normal version hitting Gametap? The press release makes it sound like it's already done, but it's not on yet. I know people downloading Universal Combat on it because they want to see what Derek Smart is capable of in anticipation of the new game.

3. Re: Crashes Dec 16, 2007, 16:37 Bet

Just straight dumps to the desktop. Nothing fancy at all, unfortunately. No logs in the game's directory, but if they exist elsewhere I'll look for them. And try as I might, I could not think of what was different about that day when it didn't crash at all.

Was actually thinking it was due to my dual core processor or some other piece of modern hardware, but when reading through the forums on the OW Support site I saw someone with a Core 2 Duo just like me and it was running fine for him. And if it's a videocard issue, then it affected both my Geforce 7900 as well as my 8800. Though it could definitely be a video driver issue, that would not surprise me.

I'll play around and see if I can't get the crashes to be more predictable, but I'm pretty sure it CTDs due to something I have configured elsewhere on my system. Crash reports on your forums sound nothing like why it pukes out on my system, unfortunately.

1. Crashes Dec 15, 2007, 21:11 Bet

Wonder if this patch would do anything for the crashing I've been having with this game on my current machine. Probably not though, seems like a bizarre incompatibility with my machine. Crashes with the CD installed base version, and with 1.08.

For some reason I've loved this game since first playing it. That people are still patching it is what prompted me to reinstall it a couple of months ago. The storyline is suitably original, so it does credit to the name even if that wasn't its intention. A lot of fun to be had really.

Managed to get it so it didn't crash some Sunday a month or so back, and just left the game running for 15 hours, even when leaving the house. The crashes drive me crazy!

Haha, this isn't the first time the mistake has been made on Blues, and I didn't notice it now either. I just see 'patch' and the links and hit them up. Every version this goes up it gets a bit closer to being as good as CMBB and CMAK.

6. Copy Protection Dec 15, 2007, 02:07 Bet

Weird that Jowood allowed the copy protection to be removed. They must consider it abandonware even to themselves, to allow that. Highly doubt that these guys would remove it unless they've been given the blessing of the people in control of Jowood's lawyers.

As far as Im concerned this should be transparent to the end users, all they have to do is wait an extra day and coordinate the release. You don't release a patch to the public and gimp the online distribution models.

CoD4, Bioshock, and many others seem to be able to do this just fine over Steam...why not Relic/THQ?

The funniest part that I didn't know until a few minutes ago is that it downloads the patch ingame even if it's a Steam version. It's like they need to add some code to the game so that it knows it's 'special'.

Didn't THQ do that with Bioshock with this last patch? Make it so it knows its special so it doesn't have the SecuROM check? Bioshock didn't freak out when I started it up with Process Explorer running, which it did until the patch.

Also, add me bitch. We'll 2v2.

9. Re: No subject Dec 12, 2007, 16:54 Bet

It's something to do with OpenGL. Those games you mentioned are all Direct3D.

It's a Quake 4 engine-specific bug. Prey was one of the first games I loaded up when I installed my 8800GT, and was puzzled at my constant 20FPS in it at the same settingss as I had on my 7900GT. Then remembered this irritating bug.

Nvidia just needs to set the single-display performance option for these games in their drivers, they already have default profiles for the games affected in the driver package already, pretty simple way to keep their users from having undue headaches.

I got this free with my new vidcard, but haven't really played it yet. I need to start, since I actually loved the beta. None of my buddies picked up the game though

4. Re: Steam version Dec 12, 2007, 16:42 Bet

I'm pretty disappointed with THQ/Relic with their patches for Steam. They don't seem to be releasing them to Valve for propagation until they get released to the public

Is that what the issue is? That it takes Steam a few days for the patch to trickle down? That WOULD be a Valve or Steam problem when it comes to patch availability, when you're talking patches that aren't being held back at all so that they can be mirrored somewhere.

CoH patches come out as fast as the QA team can push them out. Even faster in some cases, as the first version of this patch 2 weeks ago completely screwed up installations of the game if you were one of the unlucky sods that jumped on it and installed it as soon as you were given the chance.

When you're dealing with RTS fans as fickle about balance as Relic fans are, they don't hold back patches so that anything can catch up except the server that delivers it via the in-game downloader.

That bit about HAVING to patch is definitely annoying though, even for non-Steam users. I wanted to watch a few replays before patching made them unwatchable yesterday, and of course...you can't. Or at least I don't know the way. Patch or quit. I suppose I should quit living in the past anyway...

Hey, we should play sometime Dagok Add Bet to your friends list ingame.

What a bummer. Hope this turns out to be a nonissue, I'd actually want to try this. Even though I hate the HL1 engine now that Source has been around so long, this mod is still promising.
