Yeah the regen health idea is humerous. These forced balancing things really ruin these games. Oh well the tweens and under can have this game.

The funny thing about his repsonse is the complete lack of understanding PC gaming. Most of the casual gamers will be playing on a console. Fine let them play on their IWNet. Most PC gamers are a bit more sophisticated then that. They will want to run dedicated servers for their own private clan lan matches. And who doesnt love a good mod. I dont hate consoles. There are some good console games. But for a good FPS, multiplayer FPS, PC has always been my fav platform and its sad to see them basically water the PC version down.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The big business gaming industry does not understand the enthusiasts market for gaming. They may understand the "casual market" but in no way do they understand the enthusiast market at all. Also, a lot of enthusiasts..with money arent 12 years old.

Everyone knows Tribes is a classic but the fanbase is hardcore and honestly I think most devs are afraid to touch it. Game studios today want to cater to casual gamers. For Tribes to be good, it cant be watered down and nerfed galore or too casual. Nor should it be re-baked into something thats barely recognizable (Legions). But that's probably what you'll get. re-baked variations. People trying to merge aspect of Tribes into your standard fare walk, run strafe FPS. Its the jump skiing in Tribes that makes it so unique. Something even many hardcore FPS gamers are not familiar with.

News Comments > More on id and Linux
16. Re: More on id and Linux Aug 24, 2009, 05:35 Beaner

The problem is when your wife goes to the local computer store and wants to buy a cutesy little app like Home Designer 3.0 and she tries installing it on her cheap little linux box. That along with almost any piece of hardware or software she may want to buy in a store. Joe and Emma Smith wont want to mess around with Wine and any of the other annoyances just to get things to work. There is something to be said about plug and play. Linux will never have those things on the same level as windows or OSX due to the nature of it being open source. So sure if the Hubby or kid is a linux user and avaialbale for the support Im sure Linux can work.

And although I love Linux as a server at work, the comments about windows stability is moot. This isnt windows 95/98. Windows XP, and Windows 7 (which Im running right now) is super stable and works wonderfully.

Its Id. I'd expect good keyboard mouse support. If they built if for console controls first and ported it I would not buy.

News Comments > Castle: InstantAction Can Stream Any Game
5. Re: Castle: InstantAction Can Stream Any Aug 16, 2009, 02:57 Beaner

They may be somewhat successful with instantaction but in no way is it a replacement for full scale games. At least not now. It can work for simple games but I question its ability with larger robust network games. All sorts of network errors, timeouts etc. Simple little games like rocketball etc are fine for the platform. I just hope to God they don't decide to redo a Tribes game and do it on the IA platform. That would be yet another major mistake in the history of this uber franchise that has dwindled because of bad decisions. Look at Tribes 1, Tribes 2 classic, keep the speed and put it on your new Torque engine. Maybe add some new things, foucus on a robust servers and sell it through a steam type of setup. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But on IA forget it.

8. Re: Section 8 PC & 360 Server Plans Aug 12, 2009, 23:51 Beaner

I must say this is pretty cool. If they keep this type of thing up I may have to buy this game. PC mods on it might get interesting as well.

Generous of them to allow xbox game servers but it could also lead to abuse by hackers, if people could figure out a way to connect to the X Server using a PC game client - watch out.

Oooh but how devilishly fun that would be. joysticks versus keyboard and mouse heh.

6. Re: Section 8 Beta Expands Aug 12, 2009, 23:47 Beaner

Quake wars was too objective focused whereas Section 8 leaves the player more open to do what he wants and yet you can still group up as a team. Hence more fun. Ala Tribes. Sort of.

There are two things he could kill and I dont think he can kill both. He may actually help to put some commercial polish on Torque tools etc with a bigger team and resources. its a good engine. Just as long as he doesnt try to turn it into some over priced to license game engine like Unreal. Torque's appeal is its power for the price to Indie developers.

In regards to Instantaction. I just dont know. I think some people are getting way too overhyped about games in a browser the way people hyped java as though it was going to change the internet. I still prefer a good quality robust game versus what Ive tried in both IA and Quake Live. They are definitely more then simple flash games, but they sure aren't the rich experience type of games you install or play on a console. Plus the network issues you run into are just too much to bear. I just think people like Lou see advertising dollar signs and thats basically whats getting him excited which is a sure sign of game quality failure.

News Comments > Huxley Beta Opens
12. Re: Huxley Beta Opens Aug 5, 2009, 01:55 Beaner

seems like matches are of normal fps size for this genre.. 32 or so and i believe it supports 64 players, and yes there are vehicles as well.

Well I can always play tribes or planetside for 32 -64. Its been doing that for years.

the actual gameplay reminds me most (in fact strikingly similar) to Quake 2. not Q3, not UT or any of those - but strongly like Q2.. for instance the rocket launcher has a practically identical feel to it, and it gibs just like one as well...

Wow ok now you made me want to try this out.

5. Re: Section 8 in Sept; EU Beta Next Week Aug 5, 2009, 01:42 Beaner

No Tribes fans this will not fill your Tribes void. It might sracth an itch here and there but pogo jet bursting wih a battlefield style machine gun is lol.

One thing that does crack me up are the comments in varous threads that call section 8 generic. I dont really love this game, but its way less generic then yet another army fps ala call of duty or even battlefield. Seriously you cant get more generic then that. People who think the new Wolfenstein 3-D, or Modern Warfare 2 arent generic are smoking the fanboy crackpipe.

You "hardcore" gamers need to accept it's no longer 1999

What is the deal with these suit "casual" console game people and talking about hardcore gamers wanting to go back to 1998 -99? Shut up with that already. Just put the gameplay back in the games and quit coming up with lame comeback excuses. I know Hollywood is swinging the cash in your face to do these uber storyline movie games. Whoopee.

Isnt this what they said 5 years ago, and 5 years prior to that? Story games are fine they've been around for awhile. We really dont want more cut scenes. This is the age of the internet we want full immersive realtime worlds and engagement. No controlled scripted paths and cut scenes.
