Indeed. As with the other reviews from Out-of-Eight, Avault etc and unlike the GameSpot 1hr hatchet job*, Tim really played the game - and as it was meant to be played. Thats the difference between smaller sites with dedicated hardcore gamer/reviewers and the larger commercial sites with wankers/reviewers who tend to cater to the Status Quo and twelve year old snot nosed crybabies whose only few brain cells are already fried from sniffying glue and thus can't comprehend any game past Halo.

@ verno

Being a stubborn moron isn't a virtue and doesn't deserve respect. Berating the community and insulting it's intelligence isn't interaction. You really don't understand Derek Smart.

Do you always have to be such an ass hat? Aren't you tired of being the forum clown? Inconsequential retard.

hang on, how is 100 people on a server a MMO? i assume there is some kinda cross server interaction? or did you mean a persistant multiplayer game as apposed to a mmo?

Simple start here What is an MMO?

A bunch of cretins over the years took the meaning and mangled the heck out of it.

You don't need to have a million people on a server shard to have an MMO. You can have 16 people on each of 1000 servers and call it an MMO.

We, like APB and a bunch of others already out, are going for a smaller number per server in order to give a more manageable and personal experience for the gamers.

Having 64 or 100 players per server has nothing to do with it being an MMO or not.

You know what, Derek. . I'll check out your MMO. I have not played any of your games, which (if i was to) would be a great starting point? What is your flagship game to date?

I have several games for different styles but all hard core to the bone. Pick one. I don't regard any as being a flagship.

If you want a deep but easy space/planetasry combat game, there is Galactic Command Echo Squad SE.

If you want the all-encompassing space/planetary combat game "you need a brain to play this", pick any of Battlecruiser or Universal Combat titles. The latest being Universal Combat CE v2.0

If you want an FPS thats going to take your brain and totally fry it inside of 60 seconds, then my latest game, All Aspect Warfare is for you.

If you want a pure planetary aerial combat game that makes H.A.W.X feel and play like the console crap that it is, then get my other recent game, Angle Of Attack.

Seriously though, why not make a decent Single/Multiplayer Space SiM ala Freespace Derek?? The production values would be much lower, you can focus on a good story, and there is no competition to speak of?

MMO's are over-rated anyway...

Because I have no interest in that. When I was working on our recent games, I made it clear that they were the last standalone games that were were doing. With an MMO, we don't need to do the two year song and dance for a new game. We do it once and enhance it over the years.

As to "decent", considering how much money I've made on space/planetary combat games since 1996, I'm not sure why you think I was doing them. Plus, if there was any money to be made in such games, someone else would be making them. Why not go ask them? e.g. EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc? The fact is that space combat games are and will remain a niche.

Ideally make it so people can run their own servers. Then if they wish, they can activate a global stat system where it talks to a master server. This way customer's provide the server-side resources and if you join a global stat enabled server you can progress from where you left off without losing XP, accessories, etc. Also, that would give clans the ability to privative servers yet still play with global stats. I have no idea if this makes any sense.

No, because that would be a security issue.

Also, I wanted to keep the game small and personal, hence 100 players per server (same thing that games like APB are doing). Fact is, you don't need millions of gamers online to make a game fun. The fact is - and this was already proven via research done by some other company - most gamers play with people they know or meet online and hardly ever run into more than a few people at a time.

Derek, I hope you realise that you're entering a market saturated by big names and big production values. You can't compete here. If you're launching an MMO then be prepared for competition from the biggest space IPs - Star Wars, Star Trek, EVE updates and Jumpgate. These are all coming out in the next year or two, and will hoover up any remaining MMO players that are not committed to EVE already. Why would anyone play Hello 3000AD Online when they can pilot the Defiant against the Romulans, or participate in bording actions against an Imperial Star Destroyer, or take part in a huge galaxy-spanning corporation war backed by the devious finances of your employers?
Exactly.

Gimme a break. If that were the case, all of us would have packed up and gone home by now. Fact is, it doesn't matter what the competition is doing. What matters is what YOU are doing for the people YOU are targeting. Why else do we keep making hard core games? Why do games like Black Shark, ArmA-II or Eve Online exist, while companies like Funcom et al are imploding with each new release?

In contrast to those "better funded" folks, we don't need or have any of their overheads. Never have and never will. While they're spending $1m to do one thing, I'm spending 10K to do the same thing.

Everyone says the same thing with any big IP, SWG is a mess, Star Trek Online is going to be a train wreck to watch and I can almost guarantee it.

Fact is, the IP and budget are irrelevant. What is relevant are the goals, the target audience and the game you've developed. Its called competition. And long after they're done handing out pink slips, consolidating servers etc, we'll be doing just fine with our smaller install base but dedicated gamers.

To wit, Jumpgate was released in 2001. That failed. And even when Netdevil had millions of dollars from NCsoft, go ahead and count how many failed projects they've had. Jumpgate Evolution is not going to fare any better. This is not me knocking them, its just a fact of reality. Eve Online said they were going to do a planetary access. What was the end result? A console Halo rip-off. Star Trek Online said they were doing space/planets - what do they have atm for planets? levels. Yes, levels. Just like a conventional game. SWG said they were doing seamless space/planetary combat, what do they have right now?

I've been doing this for over 20+ years and have more experience in the sector than anyone else currently in the game. I have tried and proven tech. And while my games never have - and never will - cater to the mass market, that never has been my target audience and never will be. Long after players are bored with the Status Quo, we'll still be around improving on our MMO and running it because we don't have any publishers screwing around with it.

Lets discuss this again next year. As always, I know what I'm doing and I'm always - always - right about stuff like this.

So go ahead, make fun of our efforts, I'm still making games. How about you?

Well Eve Online doesn't count, since thats just a spreadsheet set in space. Though we fully expect to chip away at their install base.

Jumpgate Evolution is the same old rubbish from 2001; only this time with a different coat of paint and totally dumbed down for the masses.

Black Prophecy probably will never see the light of day.

And if you're still playing SWG, you should get in the elevator of a tall building, get off at the last floor, walk down the corridor, open the door, walk onto the roof toward the ledge. Jump off.

All of the above - with the exception of the rubbish that is SWG - are pure space games.

We've taken all our new engines and gone back to our roots with a massive space/planetary combat MMO that is true (for the most part) to our Battlecruiser/Universal Combat roots.

*I don't give a rat's ass about casual gamers. This game is pure hardcore PvP.

Plus it will have a F2P model.

More on 10-15-09. Until then, go ahead, chat amongst yourselves.

@ Verno

I don't begrudge Derek Smart for wanting to voice an opinion. I begrudge Derek Smart for playing the pariah card when he chose to voice the opinions in the first place. It's hard to claim cause and effect when you deliberately go out and become the cause yourself.

I had a well thought out and clever response to the above tripe. Then it occured to me that

a) I was on Blue's forum

b) My blog post was clearly over your head and you learned nothing from it.

c) Arguing with types like you is like competing in the Special Olympics

So, I gave up - and decided to just sip my coffee instead and just leave so that you and the rest of the usual suspects (the_culture should be in anytime now) can get on with your "thing".

@ Tumbler

I dunno man, but I'd take a PLAYABLE DEMO over ANY movie. Why? Well, as a game developer, I can tell you for free that it is easy for the devs and pubs to put all the good parts in movies and not show you the parts that would really make a difference to your buying decision.

Demos = good

Movies - ESPECIALLY CGI "target renders" - = horrid

@ Prez

yeah, I was just messing with them at the time. Thanks for reminding me. I've changed it back.

Yes, it is a tad too much. Especially for that hollow clam shell most gamers have fooled themselves into thinking actually has a brain (probably the size of a pea) somewhere in there.

Here we go again.

LOL, NO NO NO. It sold less than 100K, some estimates putting it as low as 20K... Nowhere near 500K...

Yeah, I wondering myself wtf he was going on about and where he got those numbers.

As of today, it has sold about 70K units.

I have blogged about that a lot. Publishers are bastards and given the amounts of money involved, when they don't pay it puts everyone at risk.

We faced the same exact situation with the one publisher that went under earlier this year and who put our XB360 title at risk and which I had to cancel in order for us to focus on the PC game. If I hadn't made that decision, we'd be up the creek too given how much I've spent on the games.

And yeah, the list of publishers who take games and don't pay is growing by the day as they all use the economy as an excuse.

When you have a LOT of employees (like Grin) a check makes a huge difference as to whether or not you can make payroll or not.

Good thing that digital distribution is finally taking off in a big way and smaller outfits can still bypass these pricks. Unfortunately, unless you can fund your own gig, you need a publisher.

Dumb ass move if you ask me. Sure, come out with a $50m to $100m MMO when the rest of the world is gearing up and embracing the FTP model and micro-transactions.

Any investor who buys into that sort of deal, deserves to be separated from his money.

@ Beamer

This is a man that seriously gives a flying fuck about PC games. So much that he's put $5 million of his own cash into trying to create his own. It's not about making money for Curt, it's about being able to own what he loves.

I'm guessing you said that with a straight face.

Thats stupidest thing I've heard all week and ranks right up there with the Boston Globe missive about what he's looking to spend to build this MMO.
