37. Re: Wow! I'm depressed! Jan 27, 2003, 17:46 KaRRiLLioN

Well this will be the first time since the Nvidia TNT that I will not be buying the latest iteration of their 3D vid card. I'm disappointed in the FX, because I was really looking forward to replacing my Ti4600 in my P4 2.8 Gz, but I suppose I'll have to take a wait and see attitude. I still don't trust ATI's cards enough to risk getting one, and it's not like my Ti4600 is slow either. I can play most games easily at 1600x1200.

One thing that puzzles me, on Anand's review when they start comparing the quality, I really cannot tell any difference in quality between those pics. They all look rather grainy, and all I can tell is that the AA and Aniso stuff blurs them a little bit. Am I just blind? I have never seen a difference whenever review sites start posting those pics comparing quality.

The last time I noticed a quality change was when I upgraded from my Voodoo2 card to a TNT card. The colors were much darker and richer on the TNT.

A bit off topic, I've been watching a lot of movies from my other computer on my new 65" Widescreen HDTV. I'm using a Ti4600 as the vid card. If I want to get the full widescreen effect, can that card do it, or should I get something different for that?

Thanks!

They should include swords so you can battle it out with your new shield.

No more buggy than any other game that I've played. Obviously when you mix infantry with Helicopters, Planes, Tanks, Jeeps, etc. and then add in the mix extremely flexible scripting for mission editing, etc. plus the fact that tons of vehicle addons are made for it, then many of the bugs come from end-user development rather than the game itself.

They have done a great job of supporting it, and I've been playing this game ever since it came out in Europe.

12. Re: OMFG Oct 8, 2002, 11:05 KaRRiLLioN

I've been playing this game since it came out--multiplayer is awesome and extremely flexible. As a mission maker you can do just about any kind of scenario you can envision. Conquest-type scenarios are much more dynamic and fun on Opflash when compared to BF1942, and the size of the maps are huge.

Insofar as the save games go, it's exremely easy to get around that by simply alt-tabbing out and renaming the old save game and then saving again. Of course if you're playing it by running around trying to bunny-hop to your next objective, you'll be reloading saves a lot.

30. Re: Games are a BARGAIN Oct 3, 2002, 16:41 KaRRiLLioN

I think the free market, i.e. Capitalist approach to video games works very well. Release it at the high mark, let the early adopters buy it, wait for a while until those with the available disposable income who just can't wait purchase the game and make your high profit from a lower number of units sold.

Then lower the price by $10 or so and repeat the process. Eventually the game ends up in the bargain bin where those who were patient can purchase it if they want. The market works exceptionally well in this regard. I've seen plenty of crap games end up in the bargain bin well ahead of their planned time simply because they didn't sell and/or sucked.

Also remember that Video games (the good ones) often try to bring together the best of the Movies and Music and combine them into one interactive experience. I spend more time on my computer than in front of the TV as a result. I'd much rather spend $50 on one video game that keeps me interested for a year than say a movie a night, rented for $4.95. It would only take 10 days at that rate to equal the purchase of one video game.

With most retailers you can return a video game if it sucks within a certain period of time. I'm not sure how liberal the policy is with many of them now since they've had to tighten up, but that also applies to most other media now, including movies and music.

Also, there are so many resources on the internet to read reviews and such that making an informed decision is a lot more realistic. Add to that the availability in some cases of demos and you've gotten a full and fair chance to try out most games risk-free.

The capitalist system works very well in the video game software and hardware market. I think that pressuring companies to lower their prices in order to please the lowest common denominator is blatantly socialist, but understandable for those who REALLY want today's video game at tommorrow's bargain-bin prices.

27. Re: BF 1942 Oct 2, 2002, 15:43 KaRRiLLioN

I'm still loving Operation Flashpoint even after playing it almost non-stop since it first came out. I do take breaks, however, to play the single player for many of the new games that come out. NOLF2 will be one of those, as will Hitman.

It's funny because my wife will hear some different noises coming from my home office and walk in there asking what I'm playing. She's so used to hearing helicopters and tanks that when she hears something different it clues her in fast.

BF1942 is a decent break from Opflash, but since I have been playing Capture and Hold in Opflash (the same thing as Conquest in BF1942) then it's really nothing new. Also, the great thing about opflash is that since the missions are very flexible, you can go from playing Cap and Hold to CTF to Coop, etc. within the same map rotation whereas on BF1942 the server has to choose one gametype and stick with it.

I just upgraded to Windows 3.11 and it seems to work ok. I'm hoping to double my RAM to 4 megs soon, so maybe the page will load faster then.

I used to think Blair was just one of a number of spineless E.U. bureaucrats, but he's really impressed me and a number of people I know in the U.S. While the rest of the E.U. seems content to hide behind excuses, Blair is the only one sticking to his principles.

I for one feel good that the U.S. has allies like him.

19. Re: Mouse balls! Sep 3, 2002, 19:03 KaRRiLLioN

I've been using a logitech mouseman optical and it's the former generation from the current one. I have a dual optical, but I just hate the design of the current models. The placement of the 2nd mouse button makes it harder for me to press it since I'm use to using my index finger on the 1st button, my middle finger on the middle scroll/button and then my ring finger on the 2nd button. Until they fix the design, I'm sticking with this one.

Also, I use it for OFP and it works great. I use the latest mouse drivers with it, and I had to change the middle button usage in the mouse settings to "Middle Button" for it to work properly. The only bad thing is that for some reason when I use the scroll wheel in opflash it will occasionally flip me out to the desktop. This seems to happen the most when I'm flying a plane or something where a moment like that = death.

I don't like the feel of the MS mice.

MJ looks like an experiment gone horribly wrong. He looks like some sort of horrid golem that was given life and patched together by a mad scientist.

That Nimbus broom review is hilarious. When I first started seeing about them playing in the room all day with her magic broomstick I burst out laughing. OMG, WTH all these parents thinking giving a little girl a vibrating broomstick?! They might as well grab the real thing from an adult "book" store. =)

25. Re: A World Without Water. Aug 26, 2002, 10:46 KaRRiLLioN

I live in the Atlanta Metro area and I can tell you first hand that the muncipalities are pretty bad about the water around here. Atlanta has already been fined numerous times for violating sewage overflow issues, primarily because they aren't willing to pay to overhaul the system. Those who live in Atlanta proper already pay some of the highest rates in the area, mainly to cover the millions of $ in fines that have been levied against the city. If that system were owned by a private company, then they would either be forced to upgrade, or go out of business there. Most private companies would have made the investment, I think.

I can't understand the line of thinking that all corporations by definition are evil entities, whereas government controlled facililtes are bastions of goodness and hope. Basically massive corporations and gov't are in the same basket, except that the gov't has more power, and can use force to get what it wants, i.e. police power.

Insofar as global pollution and such, I agree that development is outpacing environmental concerns. Having lived in Atlanta for about 5 years now and seeing all of what used to be really nice forested areas now turned into huge red-clay hills to be flattened and have subdivisions built upon, I think it needs to be slowed down a lot. Either way, just like too many bacteria in a petri dish, the poisons in the system will decimate a population back down to a sustainable level.

15. Re: Bottom Line Aug 26, 2002, 10:23 KaRRiLLioN

Considering the fact that 99% of music CD's are just fluff/crap that is stuffed on there and then sold for $19.99 for 1 decent song is criminal in and of itself. I haven't bought a music CD since 1994 just because they're mostly a waste of money and space now. If the record companies would come up with a good method to buy high quality MP3's from them for $1-2, then I'd do it in a heartbeat and forget about hunting for free MP3's.

Also, the fact that they make CD's (or attempt to make them) so that you can't play them in a computer or make MP3's, etc. really ticks me off. If I owned some CD's and wanted to make a compilation CD from different songs, I don't think that should be prevented. It's like throwing out the baby with the bathwater in this case. It punishes all the mainstream listeners just because a small % is stealing music.

Shrugging, scratching his arse, not having wasted all of my money on music CD's,

KaRR

The way the UN characterizes all the problems of the world as being the byproduct of the US economy you'd think they were dedicated to getting rid of the US or something.

Oh no, does this mean that DOOM3 is going to be delayed?

Also, does this mean that there's now an opening for Head Toilet Scrub Boy? I have excellent qualifications, and I really like beans!

They probably think that he was murdered and so they're trying to come up with a plan like 101 Dalmations where they can make good their escape and make doggy love all night long before they meet their tragic end.

Having just read that Ray Marden watched LotR on DVD,

I know, that will be SO awesome! Damn I hope someone can make a major breakthrough on the storage problem soon. I can imagine finally having a fuel cell powering my house and disconnecting from the grid as well.

Spiders don't bother me too much, I just leave them alone and let them kill the other nasties. I just wish that Brown Recluse spiders didn't exist. I'm always paranoid I'll get bitten by one and lose a hunk of muscle or flesh to the poison before I realize what's happening. My cousin in the Air Force lived in Oklahoma for a short while and he said the place was infested with brown recluse spiders.

2. Re: bah Jul 18, 2002, 01:42 KaRRiLLioN

GTA3 is awesome, no doubt. It's an arcadish game whereas driver had some cool physics to the driving. I really liked Driver 1, never played driver 2. If they made it so you can get out of the car and steal other cars though it'd be great. The best part about GTA3 is that you can do the missions whenever you like and you aren't stuck in a rigid linear structure.

I hope they change that for Driver 3. BTW that "teaser" really sucks arse. I hate CGI movie teasers, I want to see in-game footage.

I'd like to see one where Aliens invade the Death Star while Luke and Han and Chewbacca are rescuing the princess.

In it, Darth Vader recounts his own shameful past associations with the Predators, while Luke remembers his first baby pet Alien that grew up and ate his pet Womprat.

I just wish someone would come out with a game of this scope but make it more realistic, sort of like Operation Flashpoint. It'd be really awesome to have Aircraft Carriers where you can take off with Tomcats and go strafe the enemy's destroyers, and then in the next mission take M1Abrams and go head-to-head with the enemy tanks.
