Wow, well done - you managed to write a response without taking any notice of what I was saying. I'm sure you can find just as many people who like PB as I could who like VAC, but in the end VAC is still the better choice. What a remarkably unsubstantiated comment! What do you base this on? I'm going to ignore your comments about Half-Life 2, because they have absolutely nothing to do with this conversation.
Lazy programmers and publisher pressure will kill multiplayer gaming, if not gaming as a whole. I agree with this, but I don't see what relevance it has to the discussion.
Those tech-savvy admins must know nothing then, since you have to do nothing at all with VAC. You just install it and it autoupdates itself. My god is that ever difficult, there should be a VAC College to figure out these complex workings. I'd much rather take the word of someone like myself, a software developer, who actually knows what's going on in some of these wares. Again, more comments that are founded by your obvious, complete ignorance on the subject. Guess what happened today, just a few hours ago? Valve released a VAC update. It was recalled. I've lost count of the number of times this has happened. Here's the link for the HLDS list:
http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
Go and subscribe and hang out there a few days - or even better, read the archives and read comments from these server admins that 'know nothing', who are using this software in a completely black-box style environment in which they can not only control this system, they can't see what is happening to users playing on their service, and they can't do anything about it if they're banned.
Your comment about knowing what is going on in this 'wares' is ridiculous - you have no idea what is going on in VAC any more than we do. The only people that do know are Valve, and they're VERY CAREFULLY not telling anyone about what it does, how it works, what tests it runs, how it decides who is cheating, and so forth. Of course, its a moot point, because it seems every few days some new VAC-busting cheat is out anyway.
So, before you start babbling on about what a leet c0der you are, maybe you should spend some time on the front line actually USING these pieces of software that you feel so qualified to discuss.

Yet another games company falls victim to a misleading anti-cheat system. PB is horrible. I'm so glad that Valve are actually attempting to do something in an attempt to curb cheating with Half-Life 2 instead of contracting an untalanted anti-cheat developer. What sort of raving psycho are you? You're either a complete troll, or someone that has never played a PunkBuster-protected game at all. If you were on the HLDS mailing list, you'd see exactly how useless and pathetic the VAC system is.
PunkBuster is a great system and the PB guys deserve full credit for the hard work they do keeping games cheat free. If Valve had just bitten the bullet and just let PB do their thing and given them some money, then maybe VAC wouldn't be the joke that it is to so many server admins, myself included, and Counter-Strike (and all the other Half-Life derivatives) wouldn't have been the cesspool of cheating and exploits that they currently are.
Ask your average tech-savvy server admin how much they like VAC, and I'm sure they'll give you a variety of decent reasons about why they don't like it and how it makes their jobs harder - not easier. Then compare that with server admins using PunkBuster.

wow, magazines do actually sometimes get stuff before the Internet, until the naughty people scan them anyway.
Surely from a Valve/(Publisher X) perspective, it'd make more sense to release their information on the Internet for free - but I guess then the magazines would realise they're basically useless and shrivel, wither and die.

I'm not buying a game that takes up 6 CDs. Even installing games off 2 CDs is stretching it for me these days, but when I know DVD media would solve this problem, 6 CDs is just silly. I don't have a DVD drive in my PC, but as soon as I see more PC games coming on DVD, I'll be shelling out the bucks for one.

haha, true; I suppose my point was I'm ridden with frustration at the number of developers that don't release standalone dedicated server packages so that ISPs (like us) can more easily grab their software and set up a server in two easy steps, a la Half-Life/BF1942/etc.

If Codemasters would invest a bit of time into making a standalone dedicated server, maybe more people would run a server for this game and more people would be able to play it.

Sounds unique and groundbreaking in all respects! ULTRA MASSIVE! I can't wait to see how much more ultra it is than mere, every day, common scum MMORPGs.

What is with game developers and publishers, really? How hard is it to get themselves organised to do a file release? As a fairly large (not huge by any means) mirror site, I can probably name off the top of my head about 2 companies that actually have a remote clue how to handle distribution of patches and files. One of these is Valve, who are so much better than everyone else it isn't funny (and quite a blessing considering the number of people that want to download this stuff) and the other is Atari (or whichever company handles the UT2003 patches - Kyle, you champion).
I'm really surprised to see they've moved to a pay-per-download system. Are they trying to make money? Or are they trying to just ensure they have a system through which anyone can get their downloads without having to wait through the awesome Akamai download system?
If its the latter, then I don't really get it. There are literally dozens of mirror sites all over the world that would be happy to mirror this stuff - it might not be as high-quality as the Akamai network but hell, if it is enough for Valve and the million-odd people that need to download Counter-Strike and Half-Life patches, then surely it is enough for a relatively small game like America's Army. All they need to do is just maintain a remotely up-to-date mirror page, which is surely less financially agonizing than having to pay for Akamai services and better for the customers in that they don't have to deal with the whole paying for the game thing - the $2 itself probably isn't a big deal, just the sheer slaw involved in organising an online payment would be more than most people would be willing to deal with.
If they're trying to make money, well, that's a bit disappointing considering that this was always going to be a free game. I have no doubt that the development costs for this title are fairly high, but as it is basically a marketing expense for the US Army, one would think the costs would be trivial compared to some of the other expenses it has - especially at the moment
Anyway, just an idle rant about their chosen distribution method (and a complaint about this snafu that will undoubtably cause problems for mirror sites, developers and gamers alike).

I guess they've since decided that size doesn't matter? Yeh, I guess they binned that policy shortly after they gave up on the concepts of "quality" and "innovation". At least they're acknowledging that some people run dedicated servers and are releasing a .zip version - nothing I like more than trying to upgrade servers with a .exe patch that won't install for some stupid reason.

Great, exclusive demos! This idea has worked SO WELL in the past and it such a GREAT WAY for developers and publishers to get their product to as many people as possible!
Could be worse, I guess; it could be a game I actually wanted to play instead of a cheap, nasty cash in title anyway.
