I'm playing an Asuran thief as first character, basically a badass chipmunk with cornrows, daggers and a gun. Very fun.

I also have alts already so I could grab the names I wanted - a Charr warrior, elven mesmerer, and two other Asurans. One's elementalist, the other's a miniature warrior who waves around a greatsowrd that's bigger than she is. Will probably switch one of those out for a Norn guardian.

Game has a lot of replay value even before I start looking into PvP or WvWvW, or raiding.

I do not like standard MMOs, and I'm having a fucking BLAST playing GW2.

I love MMOs but I too am having an incredibly good time in GW2. It actually plays more like a shooter hybrid, but with a fully-developed world running in the background.

Game is so much fun it should come with a warning label. It really is that good.

Yeah, very surprised with the game last night. The Cowboys defense looked very good and my prediction of the Giants eating up the Cowboys o-line was way off.

Yep, Dallas looked really good last night. The Giants weren't bad at all, but the Cowboys came out determined to win and didn't make any mistakes.

The only downside to GW2 at the moment seems to be hacking of accounts, which is ongoing. According to the ArenaNet status report yesterday:

In the past 24 hours we helped 2,574 players with hacked accounts and 2,867 players with other blocking login issues get back into the game.

I'll take the G-men tonight.

I don't think their offensive and defensive lines are strong enough to be effective on the run, or prevent the run, against good opponents. Fortunately for them, tonight they're playing the Cowboys, who are not yet quite at that elite level.

I broke down and picked up a hard copy yesterday, and am glad I did. I have a heavy MMO background, including 8 years in FFXI with 3 years spent raiding 4 times a week, and a year plus in LOTRO. Even after a couple of hours I can see that GW2 brings a lot of new things to the table and it looks very refreshing.

Examples of what GW2 fixes in new ways:

1. Let's say in other games, you're a DPS sick of shouting for a tank/healer? Can't find that critical support job to take care of adds? No problem, the game looks so flexible that a group of good players can probably succeed with any combination of jobs in most cases.

2. Kill stealing? Gone.

3. Resource stealing? Gone.

4. Inventory bag use for crafting mats vs gear? Gone.

5. Some classes unable to solo and left waiting for an invite for hours to level up? No problem, everyone can solo.

6. Can't get an invite to an event that looks fun? No problem, just join in.

7. One member of a group ganking the loot from the chest on boss kill? Gone - loot auto-distributes.

8. Gather time for a low-medium difficulty event, waiting for Jack Bonehead the healer to get his ass out to Nobrainer Gulch? Gone - everything scales and events happen dynamically.

9. Server full? No problem, here's an overflow server.

10. Only got an hour to play? No problem, just run about doing stuff with strangers then log off - very casual friendly.

I'm sure there are more - still figuring it out.

I think my only remaining questions are over:

1. Job balance in more difficult raids and how the jobs all work together in a well-run raid(but I won't even see those for weeks).

2. Also, how deep is crafting (in FFXI it was too much of a timesink, and in LOTRO not enough)?

3. How does the AH work, and does it work?

4. Finally, community development (FFXI community is nice but low-wattage, LOTRO very helpful and very switched on).

In the meantime it's all good.

It always amazes me to read what kind of scary weather you got there in the States. And honestly, I have no idea how you can die in a storm.
It varies widely across the country. You have to remember how large the US is. Here in the central part of the country the only real issues are tornados and flooding. Tornados are totally random. You can live in "tornado alley" and never see, let alone get hit by, a tornado for years. Flooding is pretty avoidable, don't live in a flood plain. But for people on the coasts...totally different.

Here in NYC, natural disasters aren't really a major threat, but clear blue skies in September still freak me out.

Also, Katrina was already a Cat 5 hurricane when it was about to hit land, and it was one of the most powerful C5s ever witnessed. Isaac is a Tropical Storm that may turn into a Cat 1. Quite different scales of destruction there.

Yeah, I hope it doesn't do any damage. While the mental image of soaked Republican Convention delegates in rubber boats IS pretty appealing, that city has been through enough already.

Very nice results, although keeping it clean and the rust off it is a job. But it's worth it.

Sounds like it may not be properly seasoned. My Lodge pans are very low maintenance.

You can Google about seasoning, but it basically is just cleaning the pan really well, oiling it, and baking it at about 400 for an hour or more.

Thanks! The cooking side isn't a problem, it's the bottom of it that I need to oil now and then. I guess some additional seasoning is in order.

I got an email from Newegg this morning and they have the 10.25" Lodge Logic cast iron skillet on sale for $12.99.

I have a Lodge 90g cast-iron skillet, well-seasoned, which I picked up in a second hand store some years ago.

Very nice results, although keeping it clean and the rust off it is a job. But it's worth it.

When human children get lost in those dark and winding thickets, do you terrorize them for fun? Do you help return them to Human civilization to prove that not all monsters are to be feared and hated? Or do you fatten them up for succulent human foie gras?

As an undead sorceror with a discerning palate, I recommend the third option.

Broken Sword on the DS was actually kind of great. These games seem to translate really well to touch-sensitive mobile platforms.

The kickstarter I'm really excited about is the one for re-release of Horror on the Orient Express, one of the classic Chaosium tabletop campaigns for Call of Cthulhu:

Chaosium kickstarter

It was initiated during GenCon last week and was only asking for $20,000 so they could include high-quality maps and handouts in the box. It got funded within 24 hours and is currently up to $50,000. The box set should be something pretty special.

Hope you feel better. I've done something similar before - hurt like hell. A glass of rum before bed helped to reduce the discomfort (don't mix with painkillers though).

I actually agree with Spector's main point (though it appears he doesn't quite understand what John Carmack's job has actually been all this time)...

I do as well, and from other posts in this thread it seems I'm not the only one. The best games I've played have been ones with a deep story and believable characters and NPCs. I think a lot of people also feel that way.

The problem with id software is that they have an ace programmer who designs engines, but then they use the new toy to make the same game they made 5 years previously, only shinier. That's why RAGE sucked.

If someone were to take Carmack's work and uses it to add polish to a game with a deep story and excellent AI, it would sell bucketloads. But id never do that - they don't have anyone as talented with game design as Carmack is with engine design.

Bethesda is probably the only mainstream game design outfit I've seen that talk about AI and seem to make a real effort with it. No accident their games sell so many copies. People love the immersion in their designs, and interesting and believable characters are a big part of that.

25% for Skyrim seems kind of unbelievable, unless it was doing something a lot that AMD cards were optimized REALLY poorly for. I'd love to hear a technical explanation as to why they were able to up the perf that much.

I have Skyrim but haven't loaded it up yet. I sure hope Bethesda has savvied up in their rendering code since Morrowind. That game rendered the entire scene you were in, even when you couldn't see parts of it.

With arcade shooter thing I mean jetpacks strapped on dragons, how is that not arcade shooter? I don't much like joke-fantasy unless it's extremely well done, and jetpacks strapped on dragons ain't it.

Did they have laser beams strapped to their heads? If there was a game with dragons that had jetpacks AND laser beams, I'd buy it instantly.

If they hook it up with Farming Simulator 2012, you could watch all your livestock grow and then drive them to market yourself! And when they bring out Abattoir Simulator 2012, you'll also be able to... ok lets not go there...

Hmm, growing 2000 hectares of virtual Cannabis indica sounds pretty entertaining. Royal Kush or Malawi Gold?

I wonder if you can get busted by the virtual DEA?
