I'm currently in another country for 6 months for work. Are you telling me that one day I won't be able to play the games I paid for? What if I move permanently to another country? I lose my whole Steam library of hundreds of games?

That isn't what this means and I am not sure how you got there. Once the game is verified to your account, it's yours. This is only with regards to the gifting process. You pass through those gates and you are home free.

Wrong. In some cases, like you got a job in e.g. Russia and buy a game with a Russian IP, you will no longer be able to play the game once you move back to Europe or the US. No, I am not kidding. Great times we live in.

True! IP locks are already installed for some games. You buy them in the US, move to OZ or Germany, and in some cases this means you won't be able to play.

Realistically, I don't think gifting games barred from sale in a region was ever legal.

Wrong. It worked. E.g. Dead Island is not available here AT ALL, but I got it as a gift. I got at least 20+ games exactly this way.

I didn't say it didn't work, I said I didn't think it was legal.

For whom is it illegal? The paying customer, the gifting friend, or Steam in the US? Is Gabe afraid that OZ and Germany will be invading the US soon and will take him his desk away? Again: Gifting was a fair means to make a trade: money for game. Take this away, and piracy rates will go up, and this time it's not the fault of the customer. The money is here, but the companies don't want it. Alright then. Their choice.

EXACTLY! Because free trades and a free market shall only apply to huge companies, not to Average Joe! Apple can hire slaves in China and sell their products overpriced in the rich West, but don't you dare to do the same! Of course, they are making BILLIONS and you would only spare a few bucks, but even that the citizens should not be allowed.

So, let me see: some games are not available legally here. But they can be gifted. Now, big money takes away that possibility to legally obtain a copy of their games. Result: more piracy. DIRTY PIRATES! It's all their fault, and not the result of corporate greed and idiotic laws!

I own hundreds of games on Steam, Origin, GOG, and even some on UPlay. I will still buy every uncensored game - even if it is overpriced in my region! - but all the other games that I am no longer allowed to buy or get gifted will have to find a different way to get on my computer. Your loss, corporate scrooges.

I lost interest in HL when they went episodic. I got the Orange Box for TF2 (when it used to NOT be free) and for kicks installed episode 1 and 2 just to check them out. Lost interest about half way through...

Well, considering that Valve apparently lost interest 66% of the way through on Episodes (Episode 3 never came out), you weren't that far behind them.

Stop hating episodic gaming! IT'S THE FUTURE! With Source Engine 2, "Sin: Episode 2" should be out any century now!

Maybe the reason they haven't done HL3 yet is because they can't get Blue to hold still for the artists to draw? :/

I always thought that "Breaking Bad" was starring Gordon Freeman! But why did they call him "Walter"?!

I'm not sold on this Alien sequel yet. Bringing Ripley back (which is sure, she has confirmed it herself in interviews), maybe Biehn, ignoring Alien 3 (which wasn't as bad as you remember it, the workprint version is really good!) and the very awkward Alien 4 - that sounds a bit strange to me. Blomkamp is also speaking in riddles when it comes to Alien 3 and 4 (Ignore them? No? Follow their storylines? No? Wait - what? Taking a shower without getting wet?!), and I'm not Blomkamp's biggest fan. District 9 was good, but not stellar, and everything after that was meh. There are better, hungry directors out there in my opinion. We'll see.

GOG could probably learn a thing from Valve...

They already have learned too much! Geo-(b)locking, regional pricing, DRM in the store (not in the games yet)... Too much reminds me of Steam nowadays. GOG is becoming just another online game sales platform. The mighty have fallen. One world, one price... That is the past.

2. GOG going Steam (sort of) Feb 28, 2015, 12:03 El Pit

Blue, GOG introduced geo-(b)locking of games with the start of its German webpage. They blocked the access of people with German ip addresses to the store pages of some games (for now, just Comanndos Ammo Pack and Commandos 2 and 3). After starting regional pricing and creating their own download client, this is another move to becoming "Little Steam" in my opinion. This story might be of interest to you.

GOG has now fallen to censorship. With the introduction of the German website, they also introduced a geolock. Some games are no longer available for German GOG customers. Way to go, GOG! This cherry has officially been popped. So, thanks GOG, it's been nice. Don't call me, I will call you.

Wow, really? That's really disappointing...

Yes, it's unfortunately true. So, GOG games are still DRM free, but the shop is no longer. Geo-lock is the beginning of the end. Further down the road, expect them to turn into just another online games platform (JAOGP instead of GOG). G2A must be quite happy about that!
