123. Re: No subject Jul 12, 2004, 09:43 Tigger

But instead, he oversees a mere niche product, and only one at that...It's really a sad shame.

I hate to beat a dead horse...

Regardless of genre, games that we play are all expansions or improvements to ideas that have been around for a long time. Modern FPS games were all born from the original Wolf3D. RPGs got their birth from the D & D and the like. Both of these genres have been improved upon and reinvented many, many times. We call that improvement or reinvention 'the standard' by which we measure games of that type.

Then along comes UC. Universal Combat is a combination of several different genres of games. The problem is that each of these genres have been developed over time; ideas expanded on, new ideas implemented, etc. The combination of them all has not.

Regardless of how I feel about Derek personally, I think that Universal Combat could have been a great game if he had stuck to what he is good at - making space sims. Derek's problem is that he doesn't take criticism well and therefore won't be able to improve his games beyond his own vision.

Ultimately, it's not about what we think should be created but what the end-user thinks should be created. After all, those of us in the computer industry are here to serve the end-user.

Of all the things you can do in the game, you find time to fool around with stupid crap like this? Seriously?

I rest my case.

At the very least, I'm glad that none of you abject wankers can play my games; because then, this is the kind of crap I'd have to put up with.

No Derek, this isn't what you'd 'have to put up with'. You'd do the same thing you always do. Insult people for being stupid, have them thank you for pointing that out and then ban them from your message boards. Better yet, have DC drop an entire board because people were complaining that UC sucks.

And it's not like I'm saying the UC sucks without actually playing it. I tried the demo. You've got some really neat ideas, but they are poorly implemented. Outside of that, basic functionality that is in freeware games is missing from UC; the most obvious being collision detection. But now I digress.

The lesson here, Derek, is you reap what you sow.

I'm sorry you're too immature to realize that.

It's no wonder why developers seem to be "abandoning" the pc market and developing for console more nowadays. Everywhere you go, and I mean everywhere, you see a thread of PC gaming fans just constantly whining, bitching, moaning, complaining, theorizing, etc etc about development of a product they know absolutely nothing about. Who wants to make games for people like that? Who wants to make games for fans who just turn on you in seconds? It's amazing. The consolers who are purpetrated (sp) to be 13 years old bitch 100% less.

No. Developers are getting into consoles because console software sold $5.8 billion last year as opposed to PC games selling $1.2 billion.

And No. Players under the age of 18 make up 36% of the console game market.

However, you may rest assured that it was many, many more than 2500.

I stand corrected - former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin says that 25 years ago the Voyager spacecraft had 5000 lines of computer code.

If you're talking about patching a system and then counting the total number of lines of code written (including code replaced/removed during the patching process), I could see how you could arrive at a figure of 'many, many more times' than 2500. But lets face it, the things had a memory limitation to deal with and I was really talking about code that keeps the spacecraft operating today - not total lines written.

The project is called Prey Forever and will have more lines of source code then the Voyager space probe!!!

Thats not saying much, I think Voyager only had around 2500 lines of code.

What's the point of leading people on?

Indeed George, what is the point. By the time this game finally comes out, most of us will either be dead or in nursing homes.

wouldn't damaging yourself be an excellent way of recreating the E3 experience?

Yeah, but then who would post the news?

Out of the Blue

So here I am in the hospital being treated for electric shock. Note to all, don't flip your lights on and off rapidly after consuming a pot of coffee.

Given your past experience with electrical devices (computers, coffee makers, etc.) you may want to refrain from quickly flipping the lights on and off. You might damage something or yourself, and that wouldn't be very good for any of us.

Gabe directly says that the delay would have happened without the source theft

Sounds like Gabe is planning to run for public office with an interview like that; having Vivendi say that they were delayed by the theft when it happened rather than just admitting they were going to miss the ship date.

Almost adds credibility to the argument that the code theft was engineered/faked.

I believe he was referring to "text scrolling action", not text adventures.

No, I was indeed referring to text adventures. Back on this old thing:

14. Derek Smart Simulator? Mar 22, 2004, 15:29 Tigger

The problem is that if Derek Smart gets involved then the game will be too complicated to play, full of features not even halfway implemented and ugly unless they return to the old days of text scrolling action. Although Derek would probably screw that up.

Each of my drives has 3 GIGABIT of space avaliable at the LEAST... one has 40 GIGABIT free!!!

By your account, then you have about 380MB free on one drive(3gigaBITS = 384 megaBYTES)
http://www.edoceo.com/utilis/bandwidth-calculator.php?from_bw=3+Gb&cmd=Calculate

and about 5 GigaBYTES free on the other
(40gigaBITS = 5 gigaBYTES)
http://www.edoceo.com/utilis/bandwidth-calculator.php?from_bw=40+Gb&cmd=Calculate

If you're going to complain, at least get your terms right!

Also, he says in the forums if the price is $20, he won't make any money and therefore there will be no patches.

If this is indeed true, he's going to have a hard time sueing DC for his loses. They could always counter-sue that he sabotaged games sales by making claims like that.
