News Comments > Half-Life 2 EULA Legal Issues?
149. Re: Common Sense Award for Posting Feb 8, 2005, 10:22 Tigger

Steam is all about giving Valve total control over their game on your machine. They have the power to update it, lock it, delete it, fuck it up completely, make their files grow until you run out of disk space and if it's your system disk you may end up screwed because your machine won't reboot.

And

If Steam doesn't die the horrible death it deserves then I think more and more people will switch to consoles for gaming. I use my computer for more than just games and I value my security and don't trust any software house enough to give them a back door onto 'MY' computer.

And you are posting from what OS? Windows?

130. Steam and all that Feb 7, 2005, 22:57 Tigger

Well, since I posted off topic, I should post on topic, huh?

I used to hate Steam; it was problematic to get going in the beginning and I didn't like the idea of Valve knowing when I play games.

That was until 2 things happened:

1) Steam started working right.
2) I realized that even games that check for updates when they load can basically be changed to do the same thing.

I have EZ-Pass, for crying out loud! The state government knows I pass the tollbooth every day at 8am at 20MPH on my way to work and 5:35pm at 25MPH on my way home after work. Some people here are bitching about how Steam is 'watching them'. Hello?! Are you forgetting that just about everything we do today has a paper trail of some kind? The arguement is pointless.

If you use a cell phone, send e-mail, or use Reward Zone points at Best Buy, someone somewhere is watching you.

do you mean that news article is bogus? Or is the original poster being sarcastic?

I doubt the news article is bogus. And I'm not being sarcastic - I would have used my <sarc> </sarc> tags for that! I'll change my post to make it a little clearer.

I'd call a military jet a WMD. Especially if it has a dangerous payload of say...anthrax or something.

I don't mean to get off topic, but:

OMG! You bought that shit hook, line and sinker!?

77. Re: Huh? Jan 26, 2005, 23:41 Tigger

DNF is the car wreck of the gaming world - you know you shouldn't look, but you can't help it.

You're right - I can't help but look. But at the same time, I getting tired of the rubber-necking.

You seriously have to wonder if any money 3DR makes on this game will help them recover the endless funds they've put into making it so far.

I think we should call for a boycott of any news that involves DNF.

I love how they are calling cheaters "bad guys" lol. Next it'll be the terrorists.

<sarc>

Woohoo! Just another excuse for this administration to invade your property and bomb your house out of existance.

Of course, they will claim that cheaters are like Al Queda - decentralized and difficult to find. But make no mistake, George Bush is gonna smoke you out!!

130. Re: Pres is military Nov 23, 2004, 09:52 Tigger

I think people are forgetting that the President dresses like a civilian, but the bulk of his activities are something that a military commander does. The guy should be wearing a full military uniform, if he wanted to be honest.

No. The President is not a military officer; he is the civilian leader of our government. Presidents USE the military (similar to the way one would use a tool) to carry out or enforce United States foreign policy.

I am curious: What constitutes a 'bulk' of the Presidents duties that are something a military commander does?

83. Re: Satellite thing Sep 2, 2004, 16:54 Tigger

I had a friend that had his “professionally” installed, and it was always crapping out on him. I got some info from the satellite provider and using a little simple trigonometry I discovered the installer had it facing almost the opposite direction it needed to be (and as I referenced to earlier, it was not tightened down properly).

Thats why I opted to stick with dialup until cable finally came to my area. I put up my own Dish and never had any problems while people that lived on my road kept telling horror stories like the one you told.

I don't know how an installer can fuck up an installation - you only have 3 axis to worry about - and they GIVE you the angles and data for all 3 - all you have to do is match the hash marks on the dish for 2 of them and know how to use a compass.

Tigger - My main point was that you still have the phone line hooked up/used with satellite - not like most broadband connections.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to sound like a smart ass - but message boards (like e-mail) are tonedef. Sorry about that.

The maximum upload speed for a dialup modem depends on the modem standard used:

V.90 - 33600 bps
V.92 - 48000 bps

I think the reason they insisted you get the professional installation was because the box you get now is a transceiver - and the microwaves it puts out are quite hazardous to your health. If this is the case, you could get upload speeds close or equal to your download speed, but the latency would kill you - so it wouldn't matter.

61. Re: AvP Sep 2, 2004, 14:50 Tigger

(obviously, due to the design of the data requests) extreme latency, relative to online gaming.

Satellite is EXTREMELY slow for gaming - the latency is so bad, you're better off using a 56K modem.

File downloads themselves will hover in the DSL upstream speeds - about 250kbps.

Installation might cost you an arm and a leg - when I checked into it (2 years ago), the installation fee was $600 and they made you get the 'professional' installation. I tried telling them that I installed tactical satellite systems and I knew my way around setting it up - but they wouldn't budge.
