35. Re: WTF??? Jul 20, 2004, 05:29 Elvis

funny you should say that, COS THATS WHAT IT IS, and what it's MEANT to be, no-ones claimed otherwise.

CS:source is NOT cs:2, it's jsut a *PORT* of the old CS code to the source engine, with a few tweaks here and there to take advantage of some of that.

really the point to remember. its really a port of a mod makes me wish carmack had kept pushing for his idea to redo Q2 with D3 tech

ok, so i found a firing squad link (http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/hl2_performance_preview_part2/default.asp) discussing HL2 doing HDR on ATI, pointing out (at that time versus the GF5900 series) it could be a competitive advantage.

so, if HL2 can do HDR on ATI, why can't far cry?

right. where i get confused is the valve-released source engine tech video showing HDR. i've looked some, but cant confirm if this was on an ATI or NVIDIA (one presumes ATI, but...) i've got an email off to valve.

27. Re: Good News Jul 19, 2004, 02:56 Elvis

I agree. I enjoyed the first half of RTCW more than I did the second, and while the zombie/etc stuff was fine, the ending was flat. Certainly NOLF2 was a richer game. It'll be interesting to see a sequel with D3 tech, especially if they address any of the first game's flaws.

is anyone upgrading/upgraded for D3/HL2?

Wow, that really aint bad at all! I've been wondering too about the performance diff between the alpha and the final. It will be interesting to see just how well the game scales to older hardware (especially since the audio engine is all CPU?)
Who know, maybe even as far as HL2 on a TNT?

True, my bad. So 1.2 brings performance, bug fixes and tuning and Shader 3.0 for Nvidia folks, and also paves the way for the visual stuff coming in 1.3: HDR, ATI's 3dc normal compression. From the FiringSquad interview with the crytek CEO, it also sounds like they require FP 32 bit *blending* for HDR: http://firingsquad.com/features/crytek_far_cry/page2.asp

JosephBlowski pretty much sums it all up. I don't remember too many insults from fan boys, but I warned them several times in the forums that things would get this bad if Ubi repeated their same old bullshit. Recently I posted how Far Cry's 15 minutes of fame is over. No mod support, broken multiplayer, and forget about dialogue between Crytek and the ever-shrinking community. It was a huge missed opportunity.

is it really that bad? seems the coming eye candy in the 1.2 and 1.3 patches will do their part to keep interest in the game alive, perhaps even in the on slaught of Doom3 and then HL2.

update: and there's dozens of MP fixes in 1.2:

Yeah, its a reflection on where their focus was during the development of the game, coupled with a bad design call.

Does anyone know if the coming Far Cry 1.3 patch stuff (HDR) is NVIDIA exclusive? I'm thinking it can't be since Valve released a HL2 video showing HDR rendering on an...ATI? And the Far Cry CEO has said he had not seen any instances where ATI's 24 FP caused any artifacts.

16. The movie is excellent Jun 30, 2004, 12:04 Elvis

West coast here, caught the 12:01am Wednesday show. Sam Raimi just nailed it on so many levels...humor, many cool small moments, deftly balancing the tortured Spidey with the love angle and the showdown with a villan. And one sequence that is my nominee for best music video of the year. I was happy to read this time he has backend points The CGI is still visible of course, but much less so. And I think this time around is worked much better into the scenes versus being the scene itself. Who woulda ever thought Alfred Molina would make a great villan in a comic book blockbuster? Look (listen) for the girl with the violin...where's that MP3?!?!?!

It does NOT take up 2 slots and is NO more power consumption than the ATi card...

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15269 (single slot)

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15246 (Ati needs extra power too)

lol, a lone pic, at the inquirer, is not very compelling! where has there been mention of single slot 6800s or Geforce 6's?

makes me wonder what ati is going to counter with. after being #2 for two years and now releasing a blockbuster performer in the 6800 ultra, what happens if ati beats nvidia again...

here's a list of reviews at anandtech:

http://anandtech.com/news/shownews.html?i=21965

if you discount the fact that it still takes two slots, the only two negatives are far cry shader quality and power consumption. while nvidia recommends a 480W power supply, one reviewer was running an antec true power 430W with no problems.

while i am looking forward to DNF as much as anybody, it is no longer on my radar screen. info blips like this one are just non-news, and cause for George B to visit the boards with "Take Two doesn't know anything" posts.
