News Comments > Another Half-Life 2 Gold Rumor
17. haha Oct 16, 2004, 12:53 Elvis

If the game is indeed gold, the plan is apparently to trickle the news out via word of mouth.

Funny. It's 9:50am PST here in Los Angeles, and it's the same in Seattle. If we haven't heard anything, and HL2 has indeed gone gold, its because everyone at Valve is suffering from hangovers and looking for their pants.

35. Man, could the hole get any bigger? Oct 12, 2004, 12:43 Elvis

While I'm still on 3DR's side and fully expect DNF to see the light of day at some point in the future, this announcement just cracked me up. 3DR is already in so much shit already (or nearly forgotten if you're a real cynic) for DNF being so late. And now this. Classic

More than any other game I can think of, DNF is going to have the mother f**ker of all expectation against it. Eventhough its not really fair since they switched engines (at least once right?), wrote their own renderer, blah blah, but how are they going to deal with "X many years in development, and it can't do this or that?" In some ways, it reminds of Halflife's development, where they did a bunch of work, chucked it, and started over.

I need a single player demo before I can even consider buying this. The MP demo was so-so and not very fun, though.

I agree. Chuck Osborn @ PC Gamer had good things to say about the SP experience, especially praising the visuals. As for MP, I had more fun with the Tribes:Vengeance MP demo.

And Blue, I followed your link, but all I see is HL2 - did I miss something?

Blue's link pointed to CS:S shots...

I want to see more of HL:Source, dammit. All I've found is one screenshot so far...

I agree! Not only is it gonna be some smalltime fun revisiting HL with snazzy new visuals, it'll be interesting to see how it holds up to current FPS fare.

Citing poor performance of a given game on your PC as an argument against simultaneous development for PC/Xbox doesn't make a tremendous amount of sense.

Enjoyed reading your reply. Have any contacts at EA LA? (serious). I also agree with BOP that something sounds broken - either on his or the game's end - if he's getting the performance he was on the system specs he stated.

And hasn't the renderer changed? Or at least they are differences between the XBOX renderer and the PC Unreal renderer. There was some fanfare this year about "Unreal Engine 2x", an update to the XBOX Unreal tech. It has image space and depth-of-field effects, and dynamic gamma - things I'm not sure the PC version of Unreal tech has in its stock form.

News Comments > More Half-Life 2 Pre-Loads - Voucher Update
3. Re: No subject Sep 30, 2004, 04:08 Elvis

Bronze only? What if they want it on CD instead?

this is from the steam official help area:
ATI HL2 CDKey Owners will receive the "Bronze" HL2 Package when the game is released, with an option to upgrade to Silver or Gold packages. The cost for the upgrades has not been announced yet.

sounds to me if one has ordered the HL2 CD via the ATI site (and have had corresponding access to the five HL2 preloads and CS:S beta), this bronze Steam package is included. edit: as posted earlier, the upgrades cover: DOD:Source, HL1:Source, TFC:Source, the previous Valve catalog via Steam, tshirts/trinkets.

usually i'm not one for trinkets and such, but the gold is pkd actually has some appeal. i must want this game

Its only a handful of shots, but man do the first glimpses resemble Doom3. In shot #5, the guy firing looks like a twin of the Doom3 marine!

Excellent idea! And btw, wtf were these people thinking trying to host 32 players?? lol. That would be a rolicking game, but unless you're on at least a T1 or right next to the Comcast/Roadrunner plant, 32 just aint doable.

Whatever one thinks about DNF, the Take Two AND Gamespot folks are equally hilarious in their sloppiness. Does anyone at Take Two actually communicate with 3DRealms personnel, or do they just get drunk and dream stuff up?

News Comments > More Half-Life 2 Preloads
29. Re: No subject Sep 3, 2004, 03:12 Elvis

Will the people downloading it from Steam get the game sooner than the stores?

From www.steampowered.com:

"The moment the game is made available, those who have pre-loaded and purchased Half-Life 2 via Steam will be ready to start playing right away."

Still not clear on where that leaves the ATI voucher holders. . .though those with voucher in hand seem be getting the pre-load (and the CS:S beta) the same as though who have purchased HL2 through Steam.
