Getting the body to respond to cancers/tumors is likely the best bet for cures. We know that cancerous cells hide from the immune system so anything that can trigger a strong immune response is likely to help.
This article is similar to one on Ars where tumor cells in mice were injected with a flu virus—once done the immune system attacked the infected tumors and killed them off. As a bonus, the animals were immunized to that virus at the same time.
Ars article:
Injecting the flu vaccine into a tumor (in mice)In the dog’s case, taking the tumor itself and injecting it into the body essentially removed the "mask" that hid it from the immune system. The system then was able to coordinate an attack against the tumors, saving the doggo.
Having lost a friend to cancer a couple months ago—after so much painful chemotherapy—it saddens me that she had gone through all of that to no avail. I'm hopeful that affective treatments are just around the corner.
