I just used EVOO on the BBQ just yesterday. It came out perfect.

I made Cedar Planked Wild Salmon with a Lemon Dill Olive Oil bast. I was surprised how good it tasted. My cedar planks did catch fire, but it was easily put out with a water spray bottle.

I grilled some hotdogs on the top rack for the kids, and even those came out great due to the cedar. I highly recommend adding wood to your grill.

Huge plans for VR? Uh huh, I'm sure it'll be as impactul and lasting as 3D, lol!

I think he is referring to this link that I posted in the main Facebook/Oculus thread:

Reddit Sony Leak

I think this leak on reddit is what motivated Palmer to sell Oculus, because they knew they couldn't compete with Sony due to their investment in software to run on it. Reading that, and it makes me want to go buy a PS4.

But yes, it sounds like Sony has huge plans for VR. I grew up with the console wars, and I welcome the coming VR wars!

Why are you under the impression that Facebook gives a flying fuck about PCs? More and more of their business is shifting to tablets and mobile because that's where all their users are going/already are. Where does this idea that Facebook is the champion of the PC come from?

So yay, now you'll get a Facebook VR headset for your iphone to play fucking fappy bird on.

Let me clarify then, VR for "Open" platforms such as PC's, Android and iOS systems. All along Carmack has said they do not want to be tied to consoles, but to mobile platforms due to their incredibly high speed improvements compared to consoles. As an indie VR developer, you better believe we are thinking of driving these VR headsets from smartphones. Thats why using Unity has been so great, it shows a ready path to go from PC to mobile when the time comes. Eventually smartphones will be as powerful as today's computers, and we want to be able to create these fully immersible experiences using these small packages. It opens up many more possibilities.

You are right, Facebook doesnt care about hardcore PC gamers, but they do care about open platforms so they can be allowed on to them. Facebook was convinced the VR revolution is coming, and that Sony was in the driver seat to win it and they were going to be left out. Can you run Facebook on the PS4?

It's of some comfort to me that it's not MS, Google, Valve or worst of all, Apple. These are companies used to hardware who are more likely to think that they know best. I hope the owner of Oculus VR realises that their best bet is to stay the hell out of the way and Facebook are IMHO the most likely to do that.

After sleeping on it, I agree completely with you.

Oculus had to sell to someone. Sony was coming to eat their lunch. Palmer reads and posts extensively at reddit. This was posted on March 20th, at reddit which he most likely saw:

Reddit Sony Leak

Interestingly enough, Palmer has said that it took them 5 days of negotiations to do the deal with Facebook, which means the same day this was posted they began the process.

Why did Facebook want to buy Oculus? To ensure there was a PC VR option. Otherwise, Sony would have eaten everything, and VR as we know it would be console exclusive and in Sony's walled garden. Facebook would be left out in the cold since they would have pushed Playstation Plus. Why use Facebook when you can connect with all of your friends and see them on Sony's Farmville VR?

Facebook just saved PC VR, and their future. If you are a PC gamer, this is the only solution that I can think of that will see mainstream VR adoption for PCs. Who else could Oculus have sold to that could have competed with Sony? Apple? Microsoft? They would have all insisted on walled gardens for their hardware, just like Sony. The other two tech giants are Amazon (virtual storefronts? not required for the future of the company) and Google.

Ultimately, it probably came down to Google and Facebook as viable options. Google has invested in Augmented Reality instead of Virtual Reality, whereas Facebook needs it to stay relevant. Google just didnt need Oculus, whereas Facebook did.

Chatrooms are coming back. Mark my words this is for VR chatrooms and meetings. Kids are always moving to social networks that are hidden away from their parents. A virtual chatroom where you could possibly appear however you wanted and possibly make invite only? People would eat that up. I know second life in a way already has that covered but that's the wild west and has a high technical bar for entry. This would be a controlled and branded experienced.

I agree with this, and I've explained this to others as I demo'd the Rift. However, I think Facebook screwed up because they do not need to own Oculus to make a VR application for it. In the end, I think this is good for moving VR forward due to the extra capital, but Facebook is not a hardware company. This would be like them announcing they are acquiring Samsung's display business.

Again, I think ORs software is basically Glide, but we'll move to DirectX or OpenGL. But even that's not quite right because that has more to do with graphics cards, which are complicated. VR sets are more like monitors. Quick: name 3 monitor companies. You can't, because there are so many with each basically being exactly like the next. It's a total commodity, with only a few players remaining in the high end (I do love my Dell Ultrasharp IPS.)

I agree with Beamer (as I type this on my Dell Ultrasharp). In fact, at the end of the day, we'll probably be wearing Samsung VR headsets, not Facebook headsets. The software development industry needs to work to standardize the VR interface, and become headset agnostic. Hopefully Valve can take the lead on this. In fact I would love to see a "VR HDMI" standard just like there is a "3D HDMI" standard (with the obvious technical differences).

When I demo my VR project, I always emphasize that it will be headset agnostic. Obviously, the Rift is the only one on the market right now, but I will add support for all available.

As for major companies that we have not heard from yet, my money is on Samsung. As a major smartphone manufacturer, they have all the components easily ready to build a competing headset. They control the latency of the displays being used, and they already integrate inertial, camera, and displays in small form factors with plenty of developers to integrate it all.

I am calling it here first, Microsoft announces a partnership with Samsung to make PC/Xbox VR headsets at CES 2015.

I would just like to thank Blue for using the proper form of "raising the question" instead of the now common incorrect usage of "beg the question". It is rare to see now.

And he's especially lucky that the LTE tower has power, if his local substation is without power.

This past summer, during the major east coast windstorm that went through, we lost power at our house AND at our cell phone tower. So there was absolutely no connectivity or way to make emergency calls. It turns out even the 911 stations lost power, so it didn't matter if we could place calls or not.

Yeah, people were not happy around here about the local 911 stations going down.

Yes, we all know Halo 1 was non-Xbox live. I'm sure those Bungie guys know too. Sorry, my comment wasn't clear. That comment was to point out Halo 1 was incredibly popular thus driving people to get Xbox Live for Halo 2. I know that's when I signed up.

Halo 2 didn't hit until 2004, at which point Xbox Live was already there to stay.

The point is we don't know that. Microsoft knows the Xbox Live subscription numbers back in 2003 and 2004, and so does Bungie. I don't recall MS releasing Xbox Live subscription numbers until 2007/8.

But if you read the article, the point Bungie was making was that they were integral in designing the service, compared to the other developers designing to the service. And if you don't think Halo 2 didn't drastically bump Xbox Live Gold subscription numbers, then you are deluding yourself.

I agree. No Kool-Aid needed.

At that time, who would pay for what we were getting for free? You needed something along the lines of Halo to draw people into it.

And the point of the article is that Bungie was heavily involved in the design of Xbox Live. So it seems they designed it well enough to keep the people they initially drew in, thus keeping it alive and working today.

I used to grind my own coffee and hand press my own espresso. I could make excellent cups, but it just took way too much time and attention to detail.

My office got a Keurig and I went ahead and got one for home too. I haven't looked back. Sure, I don't get the amazing cups that I used to get. But I don't also get the crappy cups when I screw up the press. Instead, I get a consistently good cup without having to make a whole pot of coffee. At first it seemed more expensive per cup, but it ended up being less expensive per day since I don't make a whole pot anymore.

This is Colorado. There were probably 10-20 other guns in the crowd. And every single one choose to run.

It's not a question of should there be more guns for people. It's a question of whether we should reinstitute the assaut weapons ban. Then at least the law abiding citizens have a chance to stand up to someone like this. No way will someone armed with a small pistol go up against a guy with an assault rifle.

Ah, it was the Consumerist that infected me just now. I blamed all of the other ones. My antivirus stopped the first infection, but the second one got through. I think I'm all cleaned up now. That notice looks like it says its one of Consumerists ad servers that is infected.

It was probably an ad on the yahoo or huffingtonpost link then.

Maybe the "all clear" from yahoo in the safety dance section wasn't accurate.

I quickly blamed the the steam community link because it failed to load. It was probably the virus loading in from the yahoo or huffingtonpost link causing things to fail.

Can't do much about ads on major networks if they are infected.

I'm typing this on an iPad, my main machine is running malwarebytes.

I just picked up a virus from one of the links here. I believe it was the How HL2 will end link. It didn't load for me, instead it went to a steam community files link, and it started loading virus popups soon after that.

Just a warning for anyone else. Hopefully, it can prevent others from losing an afternoon.

Wow, NPD's response was that retail accounted for about 56% of game sales in 2011. 56% in 2011?!? That means by mid year in 2012, it most likely has dropped below 50%. That's probably what EA is reacting to, from their own internal numbers. I bet digital is alot higher than even NPD's estimates.

I just tried my first beer can chicken today. Tasty. I would put it right up there with a deep fried turkey. Very moist and delicious.

The best part was telling people the recipe.

Take a whole chicken, apply a seasoning rub, then shove a can of beer up its butt. Grill.

This is not necessarily a good thing. There has been much discussion of this article in the dark sky preservation community over the past few days.

It is amazing how much detailed thought and planning goes into building just about anything these days, but yet when it comes to lighting, the naive and simplistic "more is better" attitude still reigns supreme. This can be very bad. We lose much more than just our night skies. For an enlightening view of just what happens when we destroy our night, see http://www.thecitydark.com/

The point of LEDs isn't to increase the lumens (ie make it brighter), but to reduce the wattage and thus greenhouse gas creation.

Plus, the increased directional capability of LEDs should reduce the amount of light loss into the sky.
