The reason why i'm excited for steambox is because I believe it will bridge the gap between hardcore console/living room players and pc players. It will make communities larger and hopefully bring back modding.

Right now the gaming community is split between 3 platforms, PC, PS, and Xbox when that community used to be all on PC.

But you can already do all of that.

The only unique thing about the Steambox is the controller essentially, right? It's basically a fancy HTPC with a specialized Linux build... you're actually restricting yourself beyond what's already possible to do for a living-room and Steam-centric PC just to have a Steambox branded system to do this with. Basically, combined with this:

A lot of people who buy consoles buy because they don't want to deal with upgrades, steam box kind of solves that issue for lazy people.

...you're really just describing a Mac, which PC guys have been sort of flummoxed about people buying into for years too.

I'm curious as to where the whole thing ends up, but as it stands I'm just a bit dubious as to what the actual benefits are. Most of these Steam machines are more appealing to me as enthusiast cases than as actual complete systems.

Sure it's functional, if you do what I said. Using anything else -- unless they've patched the launcher in the last 2 hours, will cause it to hardlock.

I have it installed to d:\ESO and it works fine.

The reason it is important is that it is not Microsoft and/or Windows!

I really doubt many people are actually going to care about that.

It's basically buying a PC to just play games, but that can't do other PC things, for something in the price range of a PC that can do PC things -and- play the games. It makes no sense and I don't understand why anyone at all is excited for Steam machines when the only thing they have going for them is that they're not Windows based.

It means he never left the starting island where he made the character, since you have to choose a faction to leave (I can't remember if that's at level 10 or 20, it's been a while).

So basically, he managed to hit level 80+ without ever leaving the starting zones, which is sort of impressive and insane at the same time.

I find it funny they are asking people to pay full price for an enhanced version. Even Eidos discounted DX:HR Enhanced majorly for original owners. CD Project releases their 'enhanced' ones for FREE to original owners.

It's a different platform. For people new to the game or who may not have had a chance to play it on the other systems, it's a good deal and a good game. If you've already played it on another platform and want it for the new system, just wait for it to go down in price and grab it then.

I'm amazed Polygon, of all places, has the actual courage to call EA out on this bullshit.

It's Ben Kuchera's first article there, isn't it?

Maybe they hired him to do this kind of thing and garner more credibility, and maybe they just need to get page views and generate buzz around his first article there or something. Kotaku does it every now and then to generate page views but it never really goes anywhere.

Internet Explorer 11 is the fastest-growing version of Internet Explorer for many years, and perhaps of all time. It more than trebled its share in December, picking up 7.15 points. This kind of growth is familiar to Google and Mozilla, with Chrome and Firefox showing rapid take-up ever since their aggressive deployment policies were introduced.

And I'm sure that had nothing to do with Microsoft pushing it out through automatic updates around then...

You do realize that before long you won't be able to play any games at all if you insist on not buying via digital distribution, right? I can absolutely guarantee you that before the death of the PS4 and XBox One we will see the death of game discs sold at retail. Everything will be sold via Live or PSN for their respective consoles.

I'd take that bet.

There's way too many people with bad or no connections and far too many download caps out there for this to happen any time soon, not to mention the stake that retailers have in the business pretty much guarantees it won't happen within a few years.

Hell, I have a good connection and actually prefer buying digital and just plain can't because of the download caps my ISP institutes.

Wow, who to choose? A developer who will obviously defend the product, or the NYT, a paper whose reporting only approaches reality a fraction of the time (and then only by accident)...

When will developers learn that you can't please the "cultural critics"? No matter what you put in your game the proponents of -isms will always find it wanting, because they are INVESTED in finding fault with it. It's what they do. It's how they define themselves. Just make your game and ignore the grievance industry and their whining. If your critics had any talent, they'd make games the "right" way... Except they don't (because they can't...partially because it's not possible).

I wish more gamers were saying this instead of just buying into the now constant stream of "I'm-offended-by-proxy" articles we get all the time anymore.

That said, I don't think he's necessarily wrong, either. The Last of Us is for better or worse the new high-water mark for game stories to reach for and it's full of the exact things he says it is. The real question is if that's as serious of a problem as he accuses it of being, since it only really stands out as a major issue if you're looking for a victim going into it (and he was, since like every other article like it in the last year he starts talking about Sarkeesian).

Game writing needs to be better, no doubt. What it needs to do is get away from the gruff generic guy lead character that infests 90% of the games out there. What it doesn't need to do is start focusing on demographics and diluting itself by inserting the modern sitcom formula token black guy, token tough girl, token asian guy and token redneck to prove we can make fun of white people too shtick.

I'm worried that the current trends in gaming journalism will have an effect on AAA games looking for 90+ review scores in a way that spreads around diversity on the surface of their games while removing the last shreds of honesty that game writers have been able to inject so far. Even as it is it's rare for American developers to take risks in their storytelling the way that other developers do, like in the Witcher, for example; It's unapologetic in its non-PC gritty approach in a way that very few games these days will even attempt, including the Last of Us.

Sorry, that was longer than I intended when I started ranting :p

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition is probably just the PC version, but with that "new and improved" Lara face texture.

It's a completely new model. There's screenshots floating around somewhere, but it does actually look fairly different. It looked like they fixed some of the wonkiness that TressFX had on PC, too, but that's always hard to tell without seeing any extended gameplay videos. It looks good, anyway.

Oh well, console players choose their respective gatekeepers when they choose a platform.

And as often as not anymore PC gamers choose one when they buy games, too. I'd personally rather deal with Steam than either MS or Sony's stores, but there's still similar sacrifices being made when you tie your game purchases to the service.

I'd say so. Borderlands 2 for free with PS+, then Bioshock Infinite, and their competitor puts up two games that were free on PS+ about a year ago or so.

It seems like MS needs to step up their game a little bit to me, but reading around a little it doesn't seem like most Xbox fans seem to care very much... and I'm not sure why.

I don't believe them.

I wouldn't either. Valve doesn't release sales numbers, so they're probably basing it off of concurrent connections and as far as I know they didn't even hit their peak until a month or more after the game released. Combine that with it being the fastest selling Steam title ever in the month that it did release and that is hasn't really left the best seller list since then there's no way it's only 1.5 million.

When potential employers and everyone else starts scanning your Facebook page prior to hiring you, it's time to just delete the account before it becomes detrimental to even have one.

Mass Effect 3 on Amazon for $7

How about they just call it 'If we can do ANYTHING to help you while your here, stop here!' Center?

And digging deeper into it, beyond the gay thing, I really think it has merit, but how it's being described is rather strange. It's a lounge for the people visiting, but also a seperate venue/area for people with booths as well?

That sounds probably more appropriate, but yeah that's basically it.

From the Indie Statik site that Kotaku refers to:

The lounges, detailed as a separate space within the convention itself, have their own booths, tables, speakers and panel tracks, each with a focus on a company that serves a diverse community or is run by a diverse individual (or in the case of the panels, diversity issues and what Iím going to assume are issues of inclusivity in gaming).

Um... how the fuck is this gonna help anyone?

Either 'man up' on your harrasement policy, or flat out tell everyone, if your a fucking asshole you WILL be removed from the event, no questions asked.

As for the content of this lounge... seriously? Why seperate it from the rest of the event? If it's to keep the flaming gay guys who constantly ask 'OMG Did you watch The Voice/American Idol/Some other stupid fucking program' out of the general population I'm all for it.

I'm not sure I understand this response or the ones like it.

This isn't a response to harassment at the show or racism and people not being treated fairly. It's not separating gay and lesbian people or anyone else into particular parts of the show where they can do their thing and not be molested or whatever it is people think happens. It's not some replacement for behavioral enforcement among attendees.

They had shows at PAX like Achieving Gender Diversity in Gaming and Gays in Love with their RPG's and so on, so it's not like it's some non-inclusive place where people were being persecuted so they set up a petting zoo for the next show. This is because people on the internet flip their shit over everything and blow it up into as big of a shitstorm as they can until their targets are forced to compensate.

How do you NOT separate it from the rest of the event? Set up diversity enforcers in every booth so they're everywhere in the show? Have harassment checkpoints at each intersection on the convention floor?

My workplace has a diversity council, that has its own events and so on. It's a big place, with lots of employees, and they do it to foster an environment of inclusion and to work on making sure that across the field people are treated fairly. That's all they're doing that at PAX, to have a place dedicated at the show to exploring those issues in the gaming community and so they can make a public showing of doing something about the problem that they get constantly accused of being the creators of.

They've already had panels talking about these issues, now they're giving it dedicated floor space and making it a featured part of the show like any other booth at a convention. That's pretty much it.

Surely isolating educational booths, etc, on diversity issues defeats the purpose entirely?

Not exactly, everything at the entire con has its own booth. They're just having a booth for this now, too.

I don't think it'll do any good, personally, people who want to hate on them are still going to do it and people that want to be offended are still going to find a reason to be anyway. They can't win if they do nothing, if they try something it'll always be wrong, and so on ad nauseum.

He makes an interesting point in the PS4 article:

"There is a similar parallel question that says that packaged media will go away and all games will be digitally distributed. But we are already seeing, even on the early launch line-up on PS4, massively bigger games that, for many people, are just more conveniently purchased in the form of physical media."

I'd normally prefer the digital games at this point, but having run within a few gigs of my bandwidth cap last month because of the PS4 launch I can't see doing it regularly going forward. I'd never come within 100gb of it before, but after just a few game downloads over the course of the month I'll be buying on discs now.
