BF3 is going to be hard to keep alive, they should just release all DLC to anyone with a copy of BF3 so that servers can open up the map rotation for every map.

That won't happen but it would be nice.

I don't envy Dice's position, marketing bearing down on them to release before Call of Duty frenzy and right on top of two new consoles and a rather major release update to Windows 8.

Given the massive challenge to support the jigsaw-puzzle PC configurations alone it's amazing that the game works even as buggy as it is.

I guess I just got lucky with my PC puzzle pieces as I haven't experienced anything as frustrating inducing as what I've read on the forums. Not everyone is crashing, I saw someone using flare grenade type last night and it's suppose to unlock after you've made 3000 grenade kills or something.

I mostly played single player for the first couple of days and avoided the server crash issue for the most part, I do have to say that once again Dice doesn't really have a grasp on how to do a single player Battlefield game. It's far to few and between where you are given even a medium sized sandbox experience. They didn't clutter it with too many 'quicktime events' but way too many dialog cut scenes and various other bits where the game takes over your movement - even for extremely odd bits like climbing a small flight of stairs just so they can show off some more stylized animation of grabbing hand rails. So many recycled assets, perhaps an artifact of still designing around legacy consoles. A room full of Navy soldiers all with the same exact head model is rather sad.

It has AI fish, that is the main attraction.

After playing with it for a short time how long does it take for your eyes to re-adjust after taking it off?

I wonder if they can/have solved the z-axis tracking, I want to be able to lean in to see details of instruments in cockpits for example.

Maybe Microsoft needs AMD's Mantel after all

I'm glad to see developers (at least in these two examples) aren't taking that "everything has to be the same" approach on the new consoles, the PS3 really ruined a lot of PC ports where devs drew the line in the sand performance wise to the lowest one for both systems.

Aliens Colonial Marines for example, those textures were eye bleeding bad at release.

Can you make due with a $300 card, sure. but if you can afford the step up it's a pretty big boost from a 280x to a 780 GTX.

It felt doomed the moment they announced the free-to-play B.S.

I would have played the single player campaign and then uninstalled it, guess they finally figured out that's what most everyone was going to do.

I would have definitely purchased a 'normal' retail version of a new C&C game.

Beta drivers? Everyone assumed that DICE and AMD had their shit together since they were partnered up and everything.

The beta was an old build, it always is with DICE. Really shouldn't judge the final game based on it, but go ahead and do so if you like.

If things go horribly bad they can gift people free battlepacks or something.

The 290x needs a custom cooler, running the card in "uber" performance mode the 55db noise from the cooler would drive me out of the room. Some reviews recommend setting the cooler to 100% and letting the card go to those levels if it needs to.

Waiting to see what the 290 non-X can do, if it needs to run at 95C also then that might be a deal breaker until they shrink the die.

The gamestop blackfriday ad leaked and they'll be selling it for $30, that's worth the wait for a lot of people.

tl;dr - they aren't ahead but they aren't lagging behind either

How can you say that in response to the simple fact he stated? AMD released the 7970 in January, ... trouble.

You said it better than I could. I fully expect a $600 Titan, a $500-$550 780ti, a $400-$450 780, and a $300 770, within a month.

We can always dream, the 780ti is going to be $650 and the regular 780 will probably see a $40 to $50 price drop. The titan isn't a consumer targeted card so I wouldn't expect to see it drop in price.

It might be awhile before any of this happens because Nvidia rolled out their holiday game bundle for the GTX line and seems to think 3 games and offering a $100 off coupon for a Shield is enough added value to keep the prices where they're at through November.

I was really hoping the 290x would be a return to the days of 9700/9800 awesomeness but I see this as a let down.

If you just look at benchmark results and the price it seems like it's a huge win for AMD but if you look closer the card is loud, power hungry, hot and worst of all throttles the gpu core clock speed almost as soon as you start gaming.

You could point to the rather poorly implemented blower cooler and say that aftermarket coolers will solve the problem but the way Powerboost 2 works off of GPU temperatures you could still see the throttling problem persist. You'll only be trading off a loud blower cooler for louder system cooling fans to exchange the hot 95C air that's now inside your case.

The only way you can get around the issue is to either run the card's cooling fans at obnoxious sounding speeds or reduce the performance level to match the ineffectiveness of the on-board cooler.
