News Comments > Steam for Linux Beta Client

Don't know if I could ever give up my Windows addiction, maybe a duel boot if the content on the Linux side was compelling and exclusive.

I do think it's about time someone with some pull in the gaming side got involved with improving the experience on Linux, despite some people feeling put off by Steam being released for their "everything should be free and open" operating system.

Won't stop people from using a utility to make it go all the way up to 120.

There's no server browser in the game either, just match making.

There are dedicated servers but they're not rentable, so no hands on admin support or 24/7 nuketown servers, which in the latter case may not be such a bad thing.

It's also sitting at #3 on Steams tops sellers list in the US, and that's just for people who bought it through Steam.

Won't that show everyone that 1942 was better than BF3?

They wanted to add a blue filter to 1942 but ran out of time.

That's awesome. I Love BF1942.

Okay so it's a ploy to make some money off the expansion packs I'm guessing.

And I'm still waiting for BF1943 to be on PC... but I guess this is cool...

Wait no maybe it's not - maybe I'm just falling for their ploy! I'm so confused!

1943 is NEVER coming to the PC, I'd rather have an updated 1942 than that xbox arcade junk anyway. Until I see screenshots or video from BF4 it could very well be a return to WWII setting.

Widescreen fix for 1942 requires some file editing

Widescreen 1942

Here is the explanation for why the origin version doesn't work with the disc based version.

The problem that Kaos had is that they kept using the Unreal Engine for their games and seemed to lack the ability to get under the hood and really change some of the core systems enough to make the games they made with it feel like something other than just a mod from Unreal Tournament 3.

They're still clueless, I played the "Ravaged" demo for five minutes before uninstalling it.

If you're going to attempt to make a shooter with vehicles make sure you can have a solid experience out of both elements. Gearbox has managed to pull it off with Borderlands using the unreal engine, solid shooter experience and the vehicles are fun but could still be improved - they've at least attempted to make them feel different than what comes out of the box with the unreal engine's physics and handling.

Feel free to check the number of people playing different games.

http://www.gametracker.com/search/bf2/1500/?sort=c_numplayers&order=DESC

I guess you could still say multiplayer still exists for BF2 but the bulk of players left the game behind.

Yes you can still play many older multiplayer games, but the numbers definitely shrink faster now than they used to. We're well beyond the days of extreme longevity with the likes of Quake 2, Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1942/2.

BF1942 servers are still operational, EA hasn't shuttered the master server list. DICE have said they plan to continue support for BF3 beyond the release of BF4. The lack of support will come from the community when they either switch up to BF4 or something else.

My bullshit meter is pinging pretty hard. Regardless, my only question is how long before they shut down bf3. I've got $100 invested in that now.

It'll shut itself down when people quit playing, most will switch to BF4.

The cycle for multiplayer longevity is getting shorter and shorter.

You can't look at it as an investment, anymore than playing a round of golf for $100 is an investment. You pay for the experience and then move on.

According to some, the next generation of consoles is released in a couple weeks.

yeah, unless you consider the WiiU next generation then no. BF4 could be a launch title for PS4, xbox(whatever the call it).

It's not that bad of a shooter, I only paid $30 for it though. It's got some frustrating bugs and of course cheaters running around with aim-bots and no weapon recoil - like ALL multiplayer games on the PC have. When you find a good game where people aren't cheating it's a lot of fun and quite intense. I like the "hotspot" mode where you have to attack/defend random points on the map.

Heads will roll for the bad sales performance and they'll probably put the franchise on the shelf or hand it over to another development studio like they did with Need for Speed.

I do have to say it was pretty much a *derp* move to use the Frostbyte 2 engine and not have over the top destruction. They don't seem to even have physics enabled as everything is glued to the level. DICE probably wanted the destruction to remain a trademark for Battlefield, regardless of the devs saying they wanted to remain "authentic".

Sounds like they're just pulling shit out of their ass to pack in more money.

I predict lots of features being cut "due to technical limitations".

first up on the chopping block will be mod support, most likely.

being able to turn off the metro UI would be a great option...

except microsoft wants to heard the sheeple into their app store corral.

Uhh how are they raising their middle finger at Intel when only the Windows 8 RT tablets are going to use an ARM CPU while the Surface tablets with regular Windows 8 Pro will be having Intel inside all the way? Get a clue, dude.

Microsoft was founded on x86 hardware, I can't imagine that cost was the issue when making a cheap (lol $499 starting price) tablet not using an intel processor is saving them money.

I know about the pro version but this RT version of the surface is both a stab at intel dominance and an insult to consumers when you consider the price of a decent netbook is almost half that of their low end tablet.

The reason to get Windows 8 is the Surface Pro.

We'll see how much of a reason that ends up being, too. But if you need a tablet you can work on, Windows 8 makes sense. If you do need one of those, bringing Windows 8 to all devices makes sense.

Otherwise, like many OSs, no reason to upgrade instead waiting until you build a new device.

People are slowly waking up to the fact that the cheaper "Surface" isn't running a normal version of Windows, it's surprising to see Microsoft raise their middle finger at Intel and decide to use an ARM processor instead of an x86 chip. There's no reason why they couldn't have come out with an affordable tablet that also acts like a laptop. They even put a trackpad looking device on the keyboard cover to trick people into thinking it's capable of running real applications and not just the sesame street UI ones.

I think the pro will be a flop as well, late to the party, over priced and under powered.

I'd get one of these if using a PC as a tablet is important to you.

I can't think of any reason to get windows8.

The few that I can think of are rather insignificant, new task manager, ability to play traffic cop with file copies - you can pause one and let another complete faster, ability to have different images on multimonitor desktop backgrounds. Some people keep saying it's faster but I haven't seen any benchmarks to back that claim up, just look at the gaming performance in that Radeon test. Boots faster? To the desktop or to a Metro UI start screen where you still need to launch the desktop as an app?

There may be more technical behind the scenes stuff that's improved, mostly for people running newer hardware. I think there's some stuff in there for SSD that's suppose to be an improvement.

Not interested in using it even if I were to get it for free, no reason to switch from a perfectly stable version 7 to a version of windows with countless headaches and most likely problematic driver support for older devices. I already know of one game in my library that supposedly doesn't work with Win8, doubtful that developers will fix older games that flat out refuse to run.
