JJ Abrams movie pitch for Half Life

Okay we open the movie on Xen which is now a remote island in the south pacific, huge lens flare washes across the screen...

The only ones affected by MS forcing internet access for their next console will be people in rural areas.

but they're not really gamers.

I tried the prototype version at a trade show in November 2012 in Orlando.

The good:

TOTAL immersion, 110 diagonal FOV. 3DOF tracker integrated into system. Used a game controller to navigate fwd/bckwd and head sensor for yaw and pitch. Lightweight and low cost.

The bad:

1. Total immersion with no outside reference points led to simulation adapation sickness within 1 minute of use. This will differ for eveyrone, but I feel it could be a deal breaker, especially for fast twitch games. I could not use it for any length of time.
2. Very big pixels due to cell phone displays being used. Not sure if they have designed in optics, probably not at that price point. The pixels blurred very bad with any head movement. Demo dude said this was being addressed in next prototype version. Large pixels and large FOV lead to very poor angular resolution. This means the graphics quality is good for close up virtual distances, in fact the demo took place in a closed virtual room. If if was setup for longer in game distances, like shooting more than 50 meters, there would be very low resolution, and things would look blocky. At farther virtual ranges, you would not be able to identify objects/people as foe or friend.

thanks for the mini review, mostly why I'm waiting for the production version which will hopefully address things like big pixels and motion blur.

Which of these two setups do you want?

I think people are going to sit around on the forums discussing ways to remove the red ring around your face from wearing the Oculus Rift for hours on end.

I'll be sporting a couple of D cups for sure.

Why is everyone so interested in this? Strapping motion controlled monitors to your head doesn't sound like the truly immersive experience I was promised with VR technology so long ago.

Until we completely figure out how the human brain works we're not going to be putting some hat on our heads and beaming images and sound right to our brain.

The potential for this is whatever you make of it, if you just want the experience of having a view that completely envelops your peripheral view you could disable the motion tracking and just use it as a replacement screen. Enable the motion sensors and go nuts with creating a VR experience.

not sure how he's doing the movement.

Tiny Tina needed her own expansion pack, something for those whiny bitches to cry about.

I'm still puzzled as to how they could have done a bang up job on this game but from all the media released for Aliens:CM it looks so much lower in quality.

Im a console gamer who reads blues every day. All you guys ever do is bitch. And talk about all the games your not gonna buy. You endlessly whine about anti pirate techniques while you pirate every thing you can. pc gaming is dead. pc's are dead. no one even makes pc's any more. and no one makes pc games any more, and no one cares. My ps3 plays in 3d on my 60 inch plasma. Book stores are gone. Music stores are gone. Time moves on. Very soon publishers will stop making ports for you to steal ,or bitch about, or declare you wont buy.

The underlying tech isn't up to the task of having a never ending persistent world. An end game scenario helps alleviate this problem with a much needed reset after hours of gameplay.

This is still using the Arma 2 engine, too clunky for most gamers, lack of decent physics.

The main problem for with DayZ is there's no end game goal, the survival bit should just be the meta game but there needs to be a larger goal to end the scenario. Release a virus that kills all the zombies in the world, it shouldn't be easy but it needs something.

Dumb conversation, what should have been asked is why is the voice acting for Aliens:CM is complete crap when they did a decent enough job with Borderlands?

So are the new consoles called future generation? Will the 360 and ps3 still be called next gen years from now? And what will the ps5 be called?

My mind can't process this.

They'll be called last gen, ps4 and 720 will be next gen. Nintendo WiiU doesn't bring enough pizzazz to the table so it's going to mostly just be ignored.

2005 called and they want their graphics back.

Nope, graphics look fine and considering it's using Unreal Engine 3 the guys at Gearbox that made Aliens:CM need to take a few notes.

I'm still confused as to how this plays into Bioshock, is this some sort of predecessor to the underwater city? Or are they just trying to leverage the name familiarity?

Google Android devices are the Steam Box's biggest threat.

You've got those usb android based stick computers that inexpensive ouya console, but once most people hook up a Roku or Western Digital TV device for streaming they won't be looking for alternatives.

Apple will be too expensive and Microsoft will bungle it like they always do.

Valve doesn't stand a chance because a) it's a brand that average person isn't familiar with and b) even if they managed to get it into retail stores there wont be anyone qualified in selling the device.
